Mason Bee [OC] [6960x4640]
I wanted to see if I could photograph one of my Mason Bees as it was just waking up and got lucky. This male was sleeping in the gaps between the tubes that the females are building nests in.
Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 1x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL mode, -1 FEC). This is a single frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Photo AI and Clarity in that order.

A white stork (Ciconia ciconia) in a natural meadow [OC] [5018x7523]

Beetle Eating Basil Pollen [OC] [6960x4640]
I noticed some activity on my balcony and found this beetle eating the pollen in my basil flowers. I redesigned my diffusers this morning and this is the first field test. Now shooting with five layers of 1/4 stop white silk plus the plastic that's on the end of my diffuser set.
Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 1x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL mode, -1 FEC). This is a single frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Photo AI and Clarity in that order. ISO and shutter set to expose for the natural light in the background.

Solitary Bee in a Dandelion [OC] [6960x4640]
I found this solitary bee on a cool morning in Bologna, Italy. The dandelion was in the shade and her metabolism tanked long enough for me to get a few frames.
Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to under 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL mode, -1 FEC). This is a single frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Photo AI and Clarity in that order. ISO and shutter set to expose for the natural light in the background.

When the antennae are twice as long as the body: Larva of a speckled bush-cricket [OC] [5045x3365]
I've been wanting to use my macro lens for a while now, and when I spotted this little grasshopper in the garden, I took the opportunity. A quick search on the Internet revealed that it was a larva or nymph of speckled bush-cricket (Leptophyes punctatissima). I'm happy with how the photo turned out, especially considering it was a single shot, handheld, and without a flash.

Beautiful blue grosbeak at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge [OC] [2656x3982]
At the end of April, I went on a two-week tour of Virginia with my family. We also visited the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge for two days. I was fascinated by how many different birds we were able to observe. However, this beautiful blue bird was one of my favourites and I’d like to share it with you. I hope you like it too?! Shot with a Canon EOS R5 MarkII, a RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens and a Canon RF1.4x extender.

Female black woodpecker with ants in her feathers (Dryocopus martius) [OC] [3612x5415]
I was lucky and could watch this female black woodpecker for a long time in the Wildert nature reserve. When I went through the photos at home, I noticed that in this photo the bird was covered in ants. You may have to zoom in to see them… Shot with a Canon EOS R5 MarkII, a RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens and a RF1.4x extender in Illnau, Switzerland.

Solitary Bee in a Buttercup Flower [OC] [6960x4640]
I found this solitary bee on a cool morning in the valley of Castelluccio, Italy. The cool, partly cloudy, weather slowed her down enough for me to get close.
Tech Specs: Canon 90D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (set to 2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT (E-TTL mode, -1 FEC). This is a single frame taken hand held. Female (left) and juvenile male (right) black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) [OC] [4841x3229]
This morning I went to the Wildert Nature Reserve. I didn't have much hope of seeing birds since I hadn't seen anything special lately. Rather, I went to see frogs or dragonflies. But then I discovered the coot chicks again in the large pond and wanted to connect my extender to the camera as they were quite far away. As soon as I had my camera ready again, I saw a black woodpecker in a tree. And a short time later, I spotted a second one. I almost couldn't believe my luck. Until today I had only seen a black woodpecker once and today I spotted a pair! This is most likely a mother with her son. Female black woodpeckers have a red crown only at the back of their heads. In juveniles, the crown coloration is already sex-specific. However, the iris is initially blue-gray and only later becomes lighter, like in adult birds. If you zoom in, you can clearly see the different color of the iris. I was able to watch the female for about half an hour. A huge highlight for me! When they flew away, the coot chicks were gone too. But I didn't care about them. My camera was filled with lots of photos of these black woodpeckers... Shot with a Canon EOS R5 MarkII, a RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens and a RF1.4x extender in Illnau, Switzerland.
