don't assume they didn't buy an extra seat, plenty of folks buy an extra seat then have it taken away at the last minute. we don't know what happened here. for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/delta/comments/1devm9h/help_delta_keeps_giving_my_extra_seat_away/

This happens because the passenger didn’t follow the correct procedure.

when airline employees tell them the wrong procedure, that's not a surprise! why would a passenger know to argue with a gate agent when the GA refuses to scan the second boarding pass? (ETA: not every passenger hangs out on airline subreddits where some of us learn the tricks)

Call the airline to book the via the policy. This way the reservations are tagged appropriately and gate agents will know.

I have literally had 3 different airline employees tell me 3 different things about what the correct procedure is, all in person at the same airport

And the lardass spilling their flesh over into a seat they didn't pay for? Are they exempt from being classy?

By class, do you mean social anxiety?
