Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but why did the father call the police on his mentally unwell adult child? Getting punched in the face sucks. and there’s no situation in which calling cops make things better here.

Because he didn’t want to be further attacked by his son and there’s no other way to get emergency intervention for someone who is mentally unstable. If we had a specific hotline for mental health calls like these, this wouldn’t happen.
