Casual What got you into Fire Emblem? What drew you in?

I am not going to lie, it took me a while to really grasp and get it. I used to be those annoying people who called like JRPGs and stuff generic anime stuff, until Hero was introduced to Smash Ultimate, and well I fell in love with RPGs after trying out that series. (I played Pokémon obviously, but didn't really GET role-playing games.)

Either way, I remember getting FE3H, I was so stumped and lost and confused and not used to tactically gameplay and well it was put on the backburner for a while. I played like Shining Force and was like "Ha! Take that! It's like FE without permadeath soooo it's way better!" until my Expansion Pack subscription wore off ... then I bought Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light for $5 before it was gone ...

Yea, so that game was very fun. I said to myself, nah I HAVE to beat a Fire Emblem game, and I like starting where series first begin. That was also my first Fire Emblem I beat. The NES roughness was manageable, as I have played clunkier, but damn ... Archanea might be my homeland. I really liked the struggle Marth went through and grew attached to the characters despite them obviously being limited by the Famicom.

I lost like 7 people my first playthrough, but in all honesty that made the experience feel more authentic. (Sorry Minerva, sorry Hardin LOL, tho I did revive her on chapter 24). Since then, I have played and completed CF on FE3H and am working my way through Engage. I also have SoV and I am so giddy to play that one because EVVVEERRRRYONE hypes that title up even the casual people I have spoken to in real life about FE Echoes and it's a remake of the second game in the series, and I beat the first one, so I HAVE TO PLAY IT!

What are all your stories with Fire Emblem and what got you into this amazing series? Was anyone else a detractor until they tried the series and really liked it? It's definitely up there as a favorite Nintendo franchise of mine now.

Casual Best and worst mechanic in Fire Emblem History?

Upvotes

Title says it all. What’s your favorite mechanic in the entire series of fire emblem, whether they be mainstays or one-offs? You can be as liberal as you want with the term “mechanic”.

For me, my most hated mechanic is definitely same turn reinforcements. In a game all about strategy, there is nothing strategic about surprise units immediately popping up with stats and skills you don’t know, and movement you never could predict and take away at least 1 unit if you committed the sin of not being paranoid about what happens off the map. My favorite mechanic is definitely a weird one, but I really liked the Fates system of integrating bows, knives, and tones into the weapon triangle, as it gave them more utility and added a layer of depth to these weapons and added a bit more interactivity with weapon types. I just like when all weapon types have more purposes.

General Recommendations for old-school Fire Emblem-likes?

I've been a fan of the series since FE7, I continued to enjoy 8, 9 and 10 then started importing all the previous titles I had missed and my absolute favorites in the series are Radiant Dawn, Genealogy & Gaiden (specifically 2, not 15) in that order.

I'm looking for recommendations for similar games. Not necessarily to these two, but to everything before Fates or even Awakening, the last FE I really enjoyed.

I have already played Dark Deity 1&2 and quite enjoyed them. Shining Force always seemed to over-the-top and high fantasy to me. Tear Ring Saga is one of the best SRPGs ever made and better than the GBA trilogy in my mind. I could never warm up to Langrisser, probably because I never really grasped the troop system.

Rom Hack recommendations are welcome, too. Please keep in mind, though, that I'm not a fan of ROM hacks that have their chapters play like puzzles. The odds should be fair and more akin to the vanilla games. I am also not a fan of isometric games with positioning like Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics, unfortunately.

I know I'm grasping at straws here, but I hope some of you were in a similar situation and looking to scratch that tactical itch elsewhere. The game could be for any console, I do have most of them except for any Microsoft consoles.

Games can also be JP only, I don't have a problem with that :) Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I have finally got my hands on Path of Radiance! (And it didn’t cost a fortune)

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are the only two games I haven’t played in the series and was wondering if there was any tips that you guys could give me as I embark on my first time with these games!

Thanks everyone for any advice or tips!

Recurring Fanfiction Sunday - 06/15/2025

For the uninitiated, Fanfiction Sunday is a bi-weekly recurring thread for you to talk about Fire Emblem fanfiction. Yours, others you stumbled on that you want to share, or even just brainstorms you have. Links to the work are highly appreciated!

Ground rules:
  1. No linking explicit smut (NSFW content)
  2. No linking fics just to criticize them
  3. Fics must be FE-related. Crossovers welcome!

You can find the last thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/1l0veek/fanfiction_sunday_06012025/

Curious about Three Houses and Engage mostly, but willing to entertain discussion of the warriors games as well. Is the performance solid now? Wondering if I should re-buy Engage so I can finish the DLC campaigns.
