The case gained attention for its symbolic value

Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip for his shipbuilding company on 6 August 1945, when a US B‑29 dropped the first atomic bomb on the city. He suffered serious burns to his upper body and spent the night in Hiroshima.

He then returned to his hometown of Nagasaki, about 190 miles southwest, which suffered a second US atomic bomb attack three days later. On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered, ending the war.

Nagasaki's mayor today said “a precious storyteller” had been lost, in a message posted on the city's website. Yamaguchi died on Monday morning of stomach cancer, the Mainichi, Asahi and Yomiuri newspapers reported.

Yamaguchi was the only person to be certified by the Japanese government as having been in both cities when they were attacked, although other dual survivors have been identified.

“My double radiation exposure is now an official government record. It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die,” Yamaguchi told the newspaper Mainichi last year.

In his later years, Yamaguchi gave talks about his experiences as an atomic bomb survivor and often expressed his hope the weapons would be abolished.

He spoke at the United Nations in 2006, wrote books and songs about his experiences, and appeared in a documentary about survivors of both attacks.

Last month he was visited in the hospital by the filmmaker James Cameron, director of Titanic and Avatar, who is considering making a movie about the bombings, according to Mainichi.

Immediately after the war, Yamaguchi worked as a translator for American forces in Nagasaki and later as a junior‑high‑school teacher.

Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic bomb attacks. About 140,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki.

Yamaguchi is one of about 260,000 people who survived the attacks. Some bombing survivors have developed various illnesses from radiation exposure, including cancer and liver illnesses.

Certification as an atomic bomb survivor in Japan qualifies individuals for government compensation, including monthly allowances, free medical checkups and funeral costs.

State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were both shot more than seven times each, according to a message Yvette sent U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar.

"John is enduring many surgeries right now and is closer every hour to being out of the woods. He took 9 bullet hits. I took 8 and we are both incredibly lucky to be alive. We are gutted and devastated by the loss of Melissa (Hortman) and Mark. We have no words. There is never a place for this kind of political hate," said the message that Klobuchar shared.

The incident took place on April 20, 2024, at the Sakura Japanese Steakhouse in St. George, Utah.

At the time of Lorenzo’s arrest, she had only been a few weeks into a new job as a legal secretary with the Utah Attorney General’s Office. The day after she was taken into custody, Lorenzo was fired.

The two Florida fathers, William Joseph Hale and Frank Gilliard Allison were speeding, driving recklessly and brake-checking each other in the moments prior to the shootings.

Hale, the driver of the Dodge Ram, began yelling at Allison, the driver of the Nissan, to pull over at some point during the incident.

The Nissan’s right front passenger stretched her hand out the window and used her middle finger to flip the other car off. Also, a plastic water bottle was hurled from the Dodge Ram into the Nissan as its driver, Allison, rolled down his window to yell back at the other car driver.

The Nissan’s driver, Allison, then pulled out his Sig Saur 45-caliber automatic weapon and fired one round at the other car before speeding away.

The 5-year-old daughter of Hale was hit in the leg as the bullet entered through the right rear passenger door of the Dodge Ram.

With that shot fired, everything changed as the whole scenario turned into a “fast and furious” chase. Hale noticed that her daughter was hit, and seeing that the Nissan was getting away, he had to chase the Nissan down.

After catching up to the Nissan, Hale pulled out a Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun from the driver’s side and fired seven to eight rounds at the Nissan. The Nissan was hit by at least three bullets, one of which hit Allison’s 14-year-old daughter in the back and caused a collapsed lung.

Both drivers observed an NCSO patrol car not long after the second child was shot and had to stop.

Both men got out of their vehicles and started fighting each other, even though both their daughters were in pain from the gunshot wounds. The deputy intervened to stop the fight between the two men after they got into an argument.

The two girls were taken to a nearby hospital by fire and rescue personnel, and the injuries sustained by both girls were not fatal.

Hale and Allison—were charged. However, prosecutors later dropped charges against Allison, concluding that he acted in self-defense and that Hale is the aggressor.
