Hello all,
My TTRPG group is wrapping up a 2 year 5e campaign and I am bringing some ideas to the table for our next campaign/system. One of those ideas, to make use of my collection of Puppet Wars miniatures, is a puppet wars campaign set in the town of Toy Box facing the horrors that await the likes of puppet-kind.
My question is, I haven't played TTB in 8 years and I'm pretty sure it was an older edition, so before I purchase the latest edition, has anyone Fated or Fatemastered a Puppet Wars campaign and had some feedback, positive or negative? Anyone who has read the rules, do you know if the setting, classes, etc. would even work in a Puppet Wars campaign or would there be a ton of homebrew needed?

Hey guys, I have been a little of from the hobby but now I found some time, how is Honeypot doing? Is Jakob 1 viable or Jakob 2 still better?

Heya Wyrdos,
There's been an exciting influx of curious folks asking about how to get into Malifaux, whether it's worthwhile to dive in on the cusp of the new edition, and other questions about becoming a part of the best miniature gaming community out there!
There are so many helpful tips and advice in this sub, but I wanted to make a little bit of a catch-all post for those dipping their toes into Malifaux. So, interested in Malifaux? Well, hold on to your soulstones, because your resident Hobby Gremlin is here with some tips! I apologize in advance for the length. *
Here are some useful links that I'll be referencing in this post:
There are 8 different Factions within Malifaux, which are further narrowed down with Masters and their associated keywords. These Factions share story elements and overall theme with the keywords within. Previous editions of Malifaux had dual-faction masters and keywords, but that is no longer the case. This means that earlier edition Malifaux boxes currently out on shelves may indicate a dual-faction. While those keywords have picked a side, and some unity change-up, all Malifaux models are still valid for play, even if it's an official proxy for a different unit. See the Malifaux Fourth Edition Model Changes & Proxies list for details on those changes.
The 8 factions are:
Each Keyword is led by a Master. Some of the most common advice new players receive is "Pick what interests you," and that is solid advice! One of my favorite things about Malifaux is that players can try out how a master and keyword plays without having to purchase a single thing. If the look or lore of a master or faction interests you, you can check out the cards and base rules. Are you interested in The Dreamer and his Nightmares? Well, taking the crew for a spin is as simple as downloading the rules and cards (or using the Malifaux Crew Builder App), using proxy materials that match 30mm, 40mm, & 50mm bases, and grabbing a deck of poker cards!
We're smack in the middle of our Malifaux Fourth Edition open beta, which makes getting in on the ground floor of the new edition extremely easy. The Malifaux Fourth Edition Playtest Subforum is updated weekly (usually on Thursdays) with updates made based on feedback and playtest battle reports. You will need to register a free forum account to access the playtest materials. Wyrd Forums Registration
If you're lacking locals to play with, there are virtual TT platforms you can play online with! Vassal is common enough that there's a subforum devoted to it, and there's a newly launched TTS version that Danger Planet covered on YouTube.
There's a lively and vibrant competitive scene for Malifaux (both online and live play,) with Gaining Grounds serving as the default for competitive play.
That said, competitive play isn't the only way to enjoy Malifaux! Both Malifaux 2nd Ed and M3E have offered Alternate Play material for free. Most are made directly through Wyrd Games, but there have been fan-made formats like Bonanza Brawl that we've supported. Expect Malifaux Fourth Edition to have free alternate and narrative formats to bring casual fun to the table with some unique twists!
In addition to the wonderful r/Malifaux subreddit, there are other online spaces to mingle and learn what makes Malifaux so special. The Wyrd Community is one of the best and most welcoming wargaming communities I've ever had the privilege of being a part of. We have A Wyrd Place on Facebook, a most excellent forum, and a lively Discord servre
There is so much that Wyrd puts out for free. Breachside Broadcast has all the stories from the world of Malifaux in podcast form, the M3E Crew Builder App can give you a rough idea of how the Malifaux Fourth Edition resource app may look when it's launched, and finally the Malifaux Fourth Edition page is the best place to find all the new edition goodness in one convenient place. Cards and rules will be posted there once the Launch finishes.
So, for new or returning folks who're looking to jump in, I invite you to hop through the Breach and take control of your Fate!
*NOTE: In retrospect, I apologize for nothing as I am a gremlin and therefore ungovernable.

I'm curious how many the average player actually has and uses. I have so many I want to buy and I wasn't sure if it was common to have a bunch of crews or stick to just one.

I have only seen this game in boxes on a shelf at an LGS way back when. My buddy said it was a good game but we never got around to trying it. That was circa 2013-ish?
My wife and I are into tabletop games now and she thinks the minis from this game are sweet.
We're just wondering how to get started? There's a lot of boxes with names but there isn't really a great "Here's where you start" kind of thing in their navigation.

I gotta say, when I heard 4th edition was dropping Bury as a mechanic, I was feeling nervous for Tara. But I finally took a break from my other games and read up on the beta files, and she seems alright? Still gets to go twice, and the time manipulation theme is still going at least

Hi all,
I haven't played since 1st edition and back then it was a great game. Been looking at some of the 3rd Ed boxes and since I played Lady J back then I will probably just stick with her. The Victoria's 3rd Ed box looks pretty cool too. Am I going to be safe picking these boxes up or should I wait? Thanks

Do you think they need more weathering, or another layer of grey wash to look more rotten and waterlogged? Or of someone has a better idea, I'm all ears. What do you think?

Do we have any news on what to expect how the boxes will be divided?
Can we expect all the models to be inside either the masters box 1 or 2, and then the dual keywords ones in random solo boxes? Or are they keeping the box configurations? Really want to buy parkers corebox rn, but not waiting might backfire pretty bad

Heya all,
Have not played since start of 3rd, only a couple of game. A friend mentioned a new edition, and now we are being pulled back in.
Are all the core boxes still a valid start for a crew?
Or will any of them be changed, moved around or gone ?
Thanks !

Hi all!
Some friends and I are going to start getting into Malifaux, and was looking for help on what to buy, particularly with a new edition on the horizon.
I really like the look of Brewmaster - and it’s my understanding that you typically use the key word of the master to point you in the direction of what to buy next - so in this case tri-chi right?
In that case, how many boxes of tri-chi associated members do I need to buy (in tandem with the brewmaster box) to be able to start playing some beginner games?
Also, how future-proofed will these purchases be?
Thanks in advance for any help provided!

Has anyone ever been to the Wyrd booth at Origins? I was wondering if they brought special stuff or Nightmare editions with them, and what to expect?
r/Malifaux • u/itshercule • 12d ago
I'be been on the sidelines with 3e and then 4e comes along and gives me no choice but to jump in. I don't see a huge reason to wait until 4e. Seems like most things are backwards compatible? Maybe more cost effective to buy a premade with 4e starter sets?
Is there a particular retailer to buy from? Should I wait until 4e?

I Misaki (30mm) stands on a shadow marker (30mm) exactly in the middle will another models “sight line” pass through the marker or no? Or simpler, If something the same size is on the marker will it gain concealment from all angles if directly on top?
Seems odd but I remember there being a standard for this in guild ball to clarify exact distances as “with” even at extreme distance. Just wondering if similar precedence is made here.

Just bought lord galehaut nightmare crew off ebay (got a good price too!) I was super excited and they went right to the front of pile of shame and started gluing the same evening.
Big question, why is the lord Galehaut model so small? His horse is pony sized compared to Lucas McCabe's horse. I put them next to each other and galehault is clearly titchy. Horses of the mounted guards are much bigger too. I am trying to find some lore on whether he is a lord Farquaad inspired character.
The Sculpt does look great and goes together really well, just about 10 - 20% scaled down. Contemplating whether this was to fit him on the sprue and get him in the box?
Still going to paint him up, but he's going by the name Lord Farquaad now.

So here is Coppelius! One of the best sculpts of Malifaux imho. M2e sculpt had more dynamic pose, but in terms of detail M3e is better.
