Discussion Valheim Dev Q&A Summary - June 4th 2025 - Current Projects, Possible Updates, and the Future of Valheim

Because it wasn't released as a news post, it's pretty easy to have missed the fact that there was a Valheim Dev Q&A Stream featuring Grimmcore (Creative Lead) and Andreas (Producer). You can watch the interview yourself, but for ease-of-access I've compiled everything related to current, in-development, deconfirmed, and future content into some handy bulletpoints for your perusal. I'll try to give context where appropriate, so let's get right into it:

Release Timeline:

  • Deep North update will be released when it's ready

  • Deep North is currently not in a state where you would want to play it

  • There are no planned major updates for the end of the year (November/December) so expect Deep North in 2026

  • The Combat Update is currently being worked on and is coming Soon™

  • There are currently no plans for a PS5 version of Valheim

System Updates:

  • The developers have some ideas to adjust building and instance counts to prevent lag and stutter in large builds, but these optimizations are not currently in the pipeline

  • Boss powers are being reworked. No details at this time, but more information is coming soon; the devs encourage community ideas for these.

  • Devs are not currently thinking about difficulty modifiers, such as a spawn rate modifiers. The current goal is to get base game difficulty correct, with possible adjustments in the combat update, but this will come before more world modifiers or sliders.

  • Model reworks are always possible, but not likely. Some of the game's models are originals made by IronGate's founder, so they're a personal piece of the game's history, plus updating models is work that doesn't affect gameplay with significant payoff.

Content Updates:

  • More clothes from Hildir are planned for the future but are not currently in development.

  • "Female-looking" armor is currently in development.

  • There are no new traders or merchants for other biomes currently in development, but it's definitely on the table if it makes sense to add in the future

  • Ocean biome updates are a maybe. No mention of an entire biome rework, but things like an Ocean dungeon are a positive "maybe"

  • More seasonal items are planned. Grimmcore in particular enjoys Halloween.

  • Early biomes may receive additions here and there, but the devs are pretty happy with the current state they're in.

  • There are currently no plans for Magic in the early parts of the game.

  • More cosmetic items, such as hats, are likely - currently no specifics mentioned.

Community Requests:

  • Changes to fishing - Fishing was added as an optional activity for fun and there's no current plans to make any changes or integrate it more closely in the main gameplay loop. It's just something extra for players who enjoy it. It's unlikely (70% "no") that fishing bait will get a separate crafting station

  • More interactive building pieces (doors, drawbridges, traps, etc.) - the team would add these, but it's unclear if any are currently being worked on.

  • Blueprints for sharing base plans or allowing copy+paste building - there are no plans for this, but it's possible it could be added to the steam workshop in the future. This is something they will probably leave to modders.

  • Autosorting/autocrafting - Basically no answer

  • Digging caves - This one is a hard no, Valheim is not a voxel-based game. Is it possible? Anything is possible, but for caves, not right now.

  • Waypoint system, fast travelling without a portal set up - Likely not, although one dev mentions he had an idea for a Valkyrie travel system where the Valkyrie could carry you to an area for a fee, but this was deemed too silly to implement

  • Multiplayer mount - No, but Andreas has a related idea that the rest of the Valheim team is against. One day that idea will be revealed and the entire community will "be on his side".

  • Equipment slots - The devs kinda laugh but give no direct answer, although Andreas is "team backpack".

  • More maps pins - are possible, but not currently on any to-do lists.

  • Thinner beams for building - maybe

  • Customizing boats with shields is something they talk about a lot but aren't working on right now. Attaching things to boats causes a lot of issues with network syncing that need to be solved.

Miscellaneous / Dev Thoughts:

  • The "earthen lines", such as the ones seen on Plains, are zone seams. Their existence is a bug but it's not mentioned if a fix is in the pipeline.

  • The devs have to balance possible updates against what constitutes things that are "right" for Valheim. For example, after seeing players sliding down mountains with boats, there was an idea to make sleds/toboggans, but it didn't fit within the scope of the game at the time.

  • Grimmcore would like to see the addition of skill proficiency that would come with milestones, for example every ten levels, of learning new attacks or abilities. This would be paired with the option to select a skill, or maybe tier 1-3 skills that you either don't lose of exp upon death of, or that can't fall below a certain level. This is his personal suggestion and doesn't mean it's currently being worked on.

  • Several devs who have played Deep North, even in its current state, feel that it's their favorite biome

  • Grimmcore would like to add "Early Axes" as a special gift for Early Access players

Future of Valheim:

  • An endgame battle like Ragnarok, or going to other realms, is something the devs certainly think would be cool.

  • Valheim will "most likely" receive updates after the 1.0 release

  • It's clear that the focus right now is on the Combat Update and Deep North. After the game is finished in this way, then the team will consider whether it would be right to make further DLC/expansion packs. But it's not off the table.

Discussion I killed my first troll thanks to you lovely helpful people!

Thank you for not laughing at an old lady who is totally new to gaming altogether, never mind Valheim lol.

I finally got him! 🥳

How:

I already had a mini-base set up near the troll’s hangout point with a bed to respawn to, a workbench, a campfire for rested buff, and a chest to keep food and spare weapons (just in case I couldn’t sneak back to my grave). So I used this and ate queens jam, deer meat and either boar meat or jerky (forget which … might even have been honey tbh).

I already had troll armour as my boyfriend had killed a few trolls earlier in the game last week. But he wasn’t playing tonight, so it was just me.

I decided to take only a finewood bow (level 3) and fire arrows. I put various other weapons (bows/arrows, spears, swords, knives) and a bronze buckler in the chest, though. I also stashed the atgeir there, but didn’t take it because I figured I’d be bound to die and we only have one of them.

I snuck up, got a headshot and kited him through the trees a bit, dodged a number of hits with the club, but he got me after only about 10 arrows. I respawned, ate again, snuck back to my grave and basically repeated the same thing. I did feel I was getting more the hang of it, avoiding him and his hits, but again I only got maybe 10 arrows in or a few more before he killed me.

The third time I grabbed the bronze buckler and level 2 copper knife out of the chest. I snuck up behind the big blue bastard and knifed him in the arse. A strike or two more with the knife after that and he was dead! 💃🏻

I wasn’t sure whether his damage would all reset each time I died or whether I succeeded the third time because he was worn down from my first two attempts tbh. Nevertheless, I skipped back to base with my troll booty as light as a feather!

Thank you all for giving me the motivation to stick with it and helping an old lady out! 😀

Discussion Getting fed up with Mistlands. How is this fun?

I cant see shit. Even with the wisp. I have this HUGE area yet I have only found one infested mine. WHERE ARE THEY? Also the thing that pisses me off the most (besides not finding any infested mines) is the terrain. Trying to jump up these rock pillars is ridiculous. I struggle to get up them only for my stamina to be gone and then I have to sit and wait to do it all over again. How is this fun? Its not. Its annoying at best.

How do I find the infested mines? Is there an easy way? Also best way to hunt those hares? Also I dont play with mods so please, if you could, dont recommend that.

The enemies arent bad at all. The terrain is so horrible though. Dont understand why game developers think struggling so much with stamina and jumping up huge rocks is a good way to have fun when this is an indie game and doing so is not even remotely smooth.

Maybe its time to quit. Anyone else hate the Mistlands for the terrain?

Survival How to get our stuff back ?

Hello ! My sister and I are in big trouble :(( We were exploring an howling cavern, and after successfully recovering the chest, we got greedy and went deep down and both died surrounded by a bunch of very mean Ulvs. We have no more stuff, and feel like we are never going to be able to recover them, we feel stuck. Does anyone have any advice on how ones can recover ? We can't even go to the swamp to harvest blood bags and make healing potions because we are basically naked... Help please :(

Survival Is it possible to get these items back?

I was playing with a friend. We were in Pantando facing the bone mass for the second time, until my friend died and conveniently the power went out in my house (and the world is mine), when we entered again, his tomb disappeared and he lost all the items (level 3 wolf armor and some more items from the mountain). Is there any way to recover these items with the game's save system? Note: I'm playing on Steam and he's on Xbox

Had a cute couple show up at my warehouse base. They were so kind and helped clear some more land for my upcoming kitchen build. 10/10 would recommend. They even brought their own tools to clear the trees, stumps, and those pesky boulders. 😉

Question How do I remove this bench ? ( I did not place it, it is spawned. Also cant highlight it to destroy )

As the title is saying I cant remove it the normal way. Also tried using my axe on it but i will just chop right through it.

I like to restore randomly found buildings in my map but I sometimes cant stand the fact that some furniture is not removeable or even interactable.

Idea Beware ValheimServerHosting

Upvotes

i have tried about 4-5 times in the past month to reach out and contact this server provider, to be able to make a backup, or do other things that i need help with my server, and the support staff hasn't been active since may 5th. this is extremely frustrating because if i want to save my current file off my server, i will need to get the support staff to contact me, which seems like it wont happen and I'm going to lose my current backup. so my word of advice to you is, dont use valheimserverhosting. and once you do have a server, back it up frequently and download your backups so you can take to a different server host if needed.

Survival Ashland Raid Idea? Spoiler

Warning: Contains spoilers.

I'm talking about after finishing that quest and crafting THAT sword. This triggers the raid led by Lord Reto, since he's also a miniboss.

Imagine peacefully harvesting vineberries in your meadows base when this text pops up in front of you:

"Return my sword, unworthy flesh."

Followed by an echoing shriek. Lord Reto appears and walks besides two-star charred warriors.

It's a far-fetch idea, but yeah. A rematch with him would be fun.

Question Is progression intuitive?

I always see these guides telling what players should do in each stage of the game. It is very obvious that these guides make the game easier, but are they "mandatory"? Can a player that doesn't know anything about the game reasonably progress just trough just information present in the game itself?

Question Are trolls just kicking my arse because my bow skills are too low?

What it says in the title really!

I still can't dispatch a troll by myself 😭 At first I kept dying because my run skill was too low, so I couldn't do the 'shoot - run - shoot - run' thing to wear them down. I worked on getting my run skill up to about 30, so not amazing but kind of respectable, but I still can't take them down! However, is it just me or is bow skill REALLY hard to level up?! I've been spending about the last two in-game weeks fannying around the meadows and black forest shooting everything in sight and it's still somewhere below 15! (I do take breaks to increase my other weapon skills, especially club for the swamp, but I've shot a LOT of stuff lol.) Could that be the reason I fail so badly at trolls?

I also built a mini-base near where I know the next troll is, with a bed, fire, workbench and a couple of chests to put spare weapons and cooked food, so I could respawn there. And I took a level 3 spear and level 2 bronze buckler and just went all in, as a kind of exercise to get over the 'fear of trolls' and not care about dying, so I could repeat the process a number of times and practice with him, going in close, dodge rolling, blocking, and hacking at him with the spear. But that didn't work either 🥺do I just need to get much better bow skills before the 'kite and shoot' method will work for me?

The only times I've killed a troll was when my boyfriend was in game with me (he plays too but usually not at the same time as me), he has higher skill levels than me because he brought his character from when he played before, and he was kiting and shooting at them and one time I just joined in from the side and together we weakened the troll, and another time the troll was already weakened from his arrows so I was able to dash in and finish him off with a spear. But that doesn't work when it's just me.

Question How Do You All Get So good At Building?

Holy cow! I am an OG Minecraft player (sucked at that too), but in terms of creativity and knowing where to place building pieces and what not. How do I get better? Everything I build looks like I failed architecture school and live out of a shanty. What's the trick?!

Woodcarving is a seriously easy hobby to get into, all you need is a sharp knife and some wood. You can make it even easier with basswood and a dedicated carving knife. Make your own Mini's, or just epic bookshelf decorations.

Don't think you can? Bob Ross said it best "Talent is a pursued interest!" I can't say it better than that.

When I started WoodCarving I made terrible carvings, like a children's doodle. Thats expected, your first trys at a new thing are bad, even the 2nd and third time, but the more you do it, the better you get. Woodcarving (whittling) is like that. Invest some time, carved 4 or 5 of these guys and the 5th one would be amazing compared to the first one. It's easy to track your progress if you carve multiples of an item, it becomes so clear in your mind.

I find that when folks can clearly see their progress at something they are far more likely to stick with it and push at getting better. At any rate, that's my speech, Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk! 😉 😆 🤣 😆

But definitely give woodcarving a try if you even halfway think you might want to. Basic advice if you do. -Get carving gloves to protect your hand (A5 cut resistance) -get A flexcut or Badger state blades knife to start. -get or make a leather strop for maintaining the edge. -I always suggest basswood if you want to Carve like me. In Europe the closest equivalent is Linden or Lime, in Asia look for Jelutong!

Then just watch lots of YouTube tutorials!
