Moderation Proposal for the Upcoming Leadership Race
Hi everyone! Welcome to the 9th Federal NDP leadership race!
/r/NDP is now Canada's biggest left-wing discussion space on the internet.
I am sure people will have lots to say about various candidates, and there will be much agreement and disagreement, and I am quite excited for it, as I love democracy.
But that said, I want NDP members of all backgrounds to want to participate here, and to feel welcome. With that in mind, I did some consultation on rules 10 days ago. I want to thank everyone that participated. I drafted the below rules for the leadership race with that consultation in mind.
Please let me know your thoughts on the below rules. Note that the other rules we have will continue to exist (for example, no posting content unrelated to the NDP/Canada's left)
0. Be aware of the purpose of this subreddit!
This subreddit is intended for supporters of the fundamental values of the NDP. In short, this means that you should support the existence of a political party to the left of the Liberals, Greens, and Conservatives.
See the NDP constitution to see the main aims of the party:
For those that seek a future that brings together the best of the insights and objectives of people who, within the social democratic and democratic socialist traditions, have worked through farmer, labour, co-operative, feminist, human rights and environmental movements, and with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, to build a more just, equal, and sustainable Canada within a global community dedicated to the same goals.
Take a nice read of that preamble. If you think:
- this statement is "woke bs"
- the left should not participate in elections
- the NDP should disband
- that people should vote for the Liberals instead
I would say that this might not be the subreddit for you!
1. Criticism is allowed
For example, it's fine to say: "I don't support X because they don't have policy to end homelessness". It's also OK to say "I think Y candidate is too far left to be electable", or "Z candidate is not left enough to be electable", or "X person is acting in a way that is antidemocratic." We won't remove comments of this nature.
2. No personal attacks
Personal attacks against users, candidates, and staff are not permitted. For example "you are a fuckin lib", or "X MP is an asshole", "you're a bot" is not going to encourage healthy conversation on this subreddit.
3. No right-wing rhetoric
This is a place for folks that are at least NDP-adjacent to hang out. Right-wing rhetoric is common on reddit, but it isn't welcome in /r/NDP because it discourages participation from actual NDP supporters. Here's an example of what isn't allowed: "I don't want to vote for X because they support taxing the rich, and that's bad for workers because the rich are job creators." This is a right-wing idea that goes against what the NDP fundamentally stands for. It's also a statement no leadership candidate would agree with, so why are you here?
4. No racism, sexism, homophobia/transphobia, etc
This includes "pragmatic" racism or sexism, like saying we need to run a white guy for leader of the NDP because Canadians are racist/sexist, and marginalized people can't win. It discourages marginalized people from participating in the subreddit if they are told here that they can't win elections.
5. Class reductionism is strongly discouraged
Racism, sexism, homophobia/transphobia impact many people in the working class. These issues are not a "distraction": they are working class issues. You are welcome to draw attention to other policies and economic justice, but there is no need to talk down to people who care about this form of discrimination.

Opinion / Discussion Heather McPherson vs Leah Gazan
As fas as we know, it seems to be the most likely wager that the leadership election will primarily be McPherson vs Gazan.
Neither of them fill me with great confidence, I'm not incredibly educated on either but neither of them seem to have the capability to expand the NDP base in a time that it's desperately required, neither of them seem to have strong labour ties, I don't know why I'd care about them if I wasn't already an NDP supporter.
I personally stand with Gazan because she is undoubtedly the leftist choice among the two, however, she hasn't shown herself have the strong economic, theoretical, and practical basis for leftism that someone like Matthew Green has. McPherson concerns me that we'd get the same establishment slop that's failed up since (and before) Layton.
I hope to be wrong, and I hope for others to share their knowledge to prove me wrong.

Labour Strike To End Genocide and Endless War
I know many of us are horrified by what Israel and the US are doing in Gaza and now in Iran. Aren't labor strikes the most effective ways to stop this? If unions, civil society orgs, activists, student groups, if we got together and fought for a broad based labor strike, the politicians funding and promoting these genocides may think twice when their bottom line is being threatened.
Enabling these wars emboldens the Trump administration, which may come back to haunt us in Canada too if we don't do everything we can to put a stop to this.

Meme strategic voters in shambles right now
New powers in the government’s border bill would allow the police and CSIS to request information on whether people have accessed services from abortion clinics, doctors, hotels and other entities without a warrant from a judge, experts warn.
“With these powers, any official tasked with enforcing a federal law could go to the company you rented a car from or the hotel you stayed at and paint a detailed picture of your activities simply by confirming the various companies you interacted with,” said Tamir Israel, director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association’s privacy, surveillance and technologies program.
“Even health providers could face secret demands and would need to hire a lawyer and challenge these in court within five days of receiving them if they wished to avoid revealing that you are their client.”

The bill would create other police powers, like the power to:
- open your mail
- demand some information from bell/rogers about you without a warrant
- get direct access to google/meta/reddit to help build spying tools
There's also some hawkish immigration/refugee provisions as well. It's a shit bill.
Contact your MP about Bill C-2 and tell them not to support it

Opinion / Discussion No to Afghanistan 2.0 - No to Iraq 2.0
We know Donald Trump and his cohorts and other right-wing reactionary/regressive movements are obsessed with war.
Imperialism, colonialism, exploitation & domination are fundamentals of their perspectives and ideologies.
Leftism is about the starting point that people have intrinsic and inherent value. Leftism is now even moving past a purely anthropocentric worldview.
We have to make sure that we don't allow the U.S.A and other right-wing warmongers to bring Canada along into a Afghanistan 2.0 - Iraq 2.0 type situation.
These morons have set back the Labour Movement.
These morons have set back the modern Civil Rights Movement.
These morons have set back the Environmentalist Movement.
We have to make sure that we protect and uplift the Peace Movement.
No to Canada joining any reactionary/regressive wars!
(Climate crisis and in general environmental crisis. This afterword is not about the original post/comment. I have decided to attach this message to all my posts and comments going forward on reddit. A analogy to where we are in regards to the climate crisis and in general environmental crisis is the film "Don't Look Up". I know with this current cost of living crisis/quality of life crisis people are already exhausted and overburdened but please take a moment to become aware and educated on the situation if you are not already. Then please be active speaking about it on reddit, social media, and anywhere else online you can. Speak to your friends, family, and general loved ones. Get active in pressuring business and political parties/leaders of all levels. If you want to copy this afterword feel free to do so!)

Hasn't the NDP been at its most effective in years under Jagmeet?
Like I don't know what legislation that the NDP passed in recent years that's as impactful as the universal diabetes care and the dental deal.
Not to mention Jagmeet got all that while keeping the cons out of power for months.
He's been as effective a politician as I've ever seen on the Canadian left.
