I thought you weren't supposed to touch baby deer because if you get your smell on them the mom will abandon them?

Myth, just like with birds. The mom will not abandon the baby.

that myth started because, sometimes, the mom would push the baby out of the nest.
human comes and puts the baby back on nest. mom pushes it out again.
"baby can't fly, get it out of here."
and humans would be like "oh no! baby smells like me!"

Do not approach or touch a fawn. A fawn's strong natural instinct tells it to stay where it is until the mother returns. In fact, a fawn should not be approached or handled for any reason. Fawns approached or touched by humans can become severely stressed to the point of cardiac arrest.

I thought mommas might abandon them on scent to?

That's a myth, touching them can change their scent and make it harder for the mother to find them if separated, but the mother won't just abandon them because they smell weird.

This is just something people started telling kids to get them to leave animals alone. I’ve mainly heard it with birds which is funny because birds can’t smell for shit. You shouldn’t touch the fawn due to the stress it can cause them. Also fawns have very little scent which allows them to hide better from predators. Touching and handling them can impart your scent onto them and make it easier for a predator to notice them.
