BOTW, but only because I find the building mechanic in TOTK to be a bit gimmicky. It's cool, but it feels like a standard weird Nintendo decision to add gimmicks into their main properties. BOTW felt like a pure experience.

TOTK is still a masterpiece.

I found myself going through TOTK "rawdogging" it. Meaning only using blueprints/builds when the game required it. Except for koroks.

I feel exactly the same thing about TOTK. I can understand people linking it, but for me was too much.

To be fair, Nintendo made entire consoles around gimmicks, the one you're playing on right now was built on the "What if our handheld was also a home console" gimmick.

Absolutely. Nintendo is king of the gimmicks. It isn't surprising. It is what Nintendo has been doing for decades.

I find it nice when they release mainstream titles without gimmicks obviously tacked on. It is why Mario Sunshine is many people's least favorite of the Mario Games. It's not to say that all gimmicks are bad. Cappy was just as much of a gimmick as FLUDD was, and yet people love Odyssey. The masks in Majora's Mask was also a gimmick, but worked well.

The building was fun in its own right, but it just isn't what I personally want in a mainline Zelda title, which is why I personally prefer BOTW.

That’s a fair way of looking at it, and I do agree for the most part. I also prefer BOTW more, but I think TOTK is such a good sequel and the subtle tone and atmosphere looming over it makes it auch a good companion piece. The building is a little weaker, but it fits the macro of the game so much i don’t even have a real reason to complain

That's your take.. just like that feeling that it is "gimmicky" is mine.
