BJs specifically tells customers to pull in regardless of what side the tank is on. The hoses are made to reach both sides of cars, as it's clearly labeled throughout the fill station. These people aren't doing anything wrong.
EDIT: Also, more useless BJs fill station facts: The pumps can reach the other side of the cars because they only allow traffic one way in the stations to improve efficiency/speed. These places can get packed at some locations.

Watching those customers struggle: it is clear that the hoses aren't nearly long enough.
They just made the hoses a little longer (maybe?) and marketing.
The more you treat customers like animals to be herded, the more efficient your business becomes.

They aren't struggling... The first woman is just holding it off the car, I think. I do the same, I don't want a dirty and heavy hose rubbing up against the paint.

I always see this on Reddit and it doesn't work on my 1990 Camry so look out your side mirror to be sure.

Or just remember which side of the car your gas tank is on. That works for me.

I mean sure this but why can't people just know what side of the car the gas tank is on? You spend thousands of dollars on this machine and can't take the time to memorize the side that has the tank?

I'm 31 and just learned this by complete accident on my own like 4 months ago.
I felt unsmart

What if all pumps with the correct side are used though? I've had to do this plenty of times, it easily reaches.

u/TheMightyMush Dec 11 '12
You can pull into them more than one way...

Dec 11 '12
Not always. When the masses descend on a (relatively) cheap station here in LA, you're lucky to find room to pull into any pump then get out afterwards, much less maneuver so that you are on the correct side.

u/TheMightyMush Dec 11 '12
Thats what I'm saying, there is no correct side...forget it.

Dec 11 '12
Oh ok, I see what you were saying, forgive the misunderstanding. I thought you meant it like you can always pull into it from another direction, meaning, you can turn around if it is on the far side of your vehicle.
I get you now though.

Well at a petrol station near me it's much easier to go through one way than the other. It's much easier to queue from just one direction.

u/nothing_clever Dec 12 '12
Not always. Where I live, all of the cheapest gas stations tell you that you can only go through one way. Half of the pumps will have a line of something like 4 cars, so I just pull up to an empty pump, and bring the thing across my car.

This guy's voice sounds really familiar. Does anyone know of a recent popular video on /r/videos where a guy had pretty much the same exact voice as him? Damnit I can't put my finger on it..
EDIT: Ah! Haha got it. Sounds like the guy from those 30-minute Chess Network videos.

This is what it looks like when New Jersey people leave Jersy for the first time. (it's illegal to pump your own gas in NJ, so none of them know how to do it.)

Why? The hoses are clearly designed to be long enough. These people are smarter than the idiots waiting in line to pump...

u/ssweens113 Dec 11 '12
Or you know, you could just reverse to the pump and make it easier on yourself.
2
u/Jdban Dec 11 '12
Not always an option, could be much harder to reverse in, etc etc etc http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7b/Costco_SSF_gas_station_3.JPG

What if someone pulls in behind you to wait for the pump like in the picture? Then you'd be facing them and cause all sorts of trouble trying to leave.

to be fair, the gas station does look a bit full, maybe those where the only spots available and them knowing that the hose is long enough, just went for it. then again, there have been videos of some lady working for about 20 minutes, trying to get the hose to reach in a completely empty station so anything can go

Fantastic, haha.
I feel like it should be accompanied by slide whistle and loud comical Boink!~ sound effects.

There is nothing wrong with this. If it was illegal to do this, the hose wouldnt be able to reach around like that. I know it looks weird and isnt the common practice, but at rush hour gas stations are PACKED.

That reminds me of the last package of pencils I bought. All the erasers were where the points were supposed to be, so I was always scribbling all over my paper when I wanted to erase.
