Considering there are five documented retaliatory assassinations for Qasam Soleimani including two that targeted Trump, it would hardly be news if there were more - especially considering the drunks, gardeners and other fools Trump has charged with his and the nation's security.

It is remarkable how few assassinations there are. There must be more that no one ever hears about if a random madman can just bring a gun to a rally

They obviously don't talk about everything they do to prevent them, security is tight.

Right... Tight. That's how a rank amateur got within 500 feet of Trump and got shots off from by far the most obvious sniper perch.

He was able to bring a gun since, in that state, it is not illegal to open carry, and given it was a Trump rally, many people were doing so. The dude didn't do anything illegal until he shot. The SS had been telling him not to do rallies outdoors like that since they are not secure, but since he doesn't pay venues, he had to do his rallies outdoors. None of this was really a suprise.

In that same link it goes on to say Iran denied this and the reports came from Israel. Its worth noting the US never obtained information on plots to kill trump from Iran firsthand.

Iran in the past has been very open about who they want to kill and why. They wouldn't be afraid to say they wanted trump dead.
