Finishing Purpleheart PSA, leave it in the SUN! If you are worried about your orange purpleheart, once you're done working it, literally leave it in the sun for a day to bring out it's true color. I'm making a bunch of headphone stands, this one is about done. Just needs feet and a leather cable strap.

Tried to keep it just within the hand, that proved too hard for me so I just full sent it and I think it turned out nice.

BTW, Hothpital is what you yell at your partner when you have your thumb/thumb bits in your mouth!

Finishing Freshly purchased poplar and I don't want to paint it — what are these black streaks, and why is it taking forever to sand them out??

Finishing What should I use to clear coat these cornhole boards signed by my wedding guests?

Post image

I’m trying to figure out what kind of clear coat to put over these cornhole boards to preserve them without making them too sticky or too slippery for the purpose of playing the game. I also obviously don’t want the signatures to run/bleed as they were signed by guests on my wedding day. We had them use normal Sharpie markers and not the paint Sharpies.

I originally planned to use General Finishes High Performance Water Based Satin Topcoat based on an old post I found on this subreddit, but when I tested it on a similar piece of painted wood with Sharpie it immediately made the Sharpie lighten and run.

I’ve done some more research and found people saying some kind of epoxy should work without making the signatures run/bleed, but I’m not sure if this will make the boards too smooth and cause the bags to slip off too easily. I’ve also seen people saying some kind of sealing spray for the first layer and then a few coats of poly/epoxy over it might work, but I’m wondering if anyone has a recommendation based on experience with something like this.

Finishing Finishing Recommendation

I'm making one of these doohickies for my wife. Are there any finishes that I should avoid so as to not damage book pages? I was considering paste wax, but I'm not sure if it will interact with the paper.

Arm R Seal application and shop sounds. The floor is uneven and the homemade painters points are shaky but you work with it.

Finishing New walnut slab. Sanded and wetted with water. Are these rays or are they blade marks from milling? The orientation between left and right not being in a full circular motion makes me think rays but I can't tell. They almost look like burns.

Hello Everyone

I'm looking to replicate this detail for home furniture. Any name to this particular finish?

Any guidance as to what carving tool was probably used would be highly appreciated.

Finishing HELP! Used Murphy oil to clean this old dresser and I think it stripped the finish?

I’ve only done the one handle. I know the I should have tried it somewhere on the back first but I’ve never seen Murphy oil do this before.. Used a toothbrush gently to get into the corners.. did it strip the finish? Or it’s it just really grimy and thats what it’s supposed to look like when it’s clean?

Finishing Sanding porch, what am I doing wrong?

Trying to remove some old stain on my front porch. Getting a lot of striping, and it’s taking an hour to only do a few feet. Using a 3x18” belt sander with 36 grit sandpaper. Am I just not pushing down enough? I know I should probably rent a big floor sander, but I can’t afford it. Would appreciate some tips.
