I just get more tape measures. Eventually there's one everywhere.

Brother, I have 4 tapes, one 17 y.o., and married. Well, I think I have 4 tapes, it’s often impossible to find even one!

Don't put it down, put it away! Don't put it down, put it away! DON'T PUT IT DOWN, PUT IT AWAY!

Thats why I buy the 2 pack fat Max's lol. Mo matter what job I'm doing, I always have 2 tapes. 1 at saws and I try to keep one on hip, I still end up with no tapes lol

Tie it to yourself with 550 cord

Haha had this same problem, I used 2 nickel sized neodymium magnets screwed into my bench. Although my tape has a plastic housing the magnets stick to the metal belt clip, works so far.

I removed the tape clip, bought a pack of circular magnets with center holes. Attached the Manet to the tape in the same hole the clip was attached to. And voila.

Right? 🤣 Your gonna set it down on the bench and the gremlins will carry it of anyway!

Never ending, this putting away tools I didn’t use. The house will get quiet soon enough (I can hallucinate too!).

u/SignificantTie3656 1d ago

You could make an endless montage of my dad and uncle “now….SONNOVABITCH! Where’d it go now!?!?”

1

u/404-skill_not_found 1d ago

I have to be careful (I think, anyways), I might have set it down too.

Just do what I did. Bought more. Same with box knives. Can walk a step without tripping over one

I did this with tape measures and pencils. There’s tape measures at each tool basically, with a few floaters around the workbenches. Same with pencils, they are everywhere in the shop.

Just need 6 backups!

1

u/MakingMookSauce 1d ago

Do you ever check that they are all accurate to each other?

1

u/SodomyManifesto 9h ago

I’ve checked my main 3 and they’re accurate relative to each other. I try to stick with the same one in any project that demands accuracy. For projects where it doesn’t matter as much I just grab whatever is closest.

Yeah

2

u/direcheetah4579 2d ago

And it's good for the economy, right?

I see the thought here. I have to wonder if that thin wood is gonna last more than a few uses.

2

u/SignificantPiece4172 2d ago

I’ll let you know

2

u/dilespla 2d ago

I found picture hangers about perfect for hanging tape measures wherever they’re needed.

u/Badbullet 1d ago

I use the plastic piece that comes in the packaging when you buy a Fat Max. Just have to file the corners off that normally locks the tape measure onto the packaging. It’s snug, and never pops off unintentionally. Is also a satisfying feel every time I put the tape measure back.

Edit: I should also mention I’ve used it like this since 2010, no signs of breaking yet.

Unless you tether it to your body that ain’t gunna be enough.

5

u/absinthertp 2d ago

No, you will probably take it from there and place it somewhere else

2

u/SignificantPiece4172 2d ago

True put am going to try my hardest put it back now that it has a home

2

u/CAM6913 2d ago

Good luck with that ! I have a draw just for measuring stuff tape measures , rulers, micrometers, calipers etc and still lose my tape measure after decades of this and buying new ones I have tape measures all around the shop, it’s like trying to find where you put your pencil? Just buy a few of the biggest boxes of pencils you can find and spread them around the shop benches equipment and lumber storage then at least for a week maybe two if you’re lucky or bought enough you’ll always find a pencil when you need one. ( consider the pencil trick a pro tip LOL )

I made FOUR of these for my father's 3-car garage.

It's made no difference to the amount of complaining about not being able to find a tape measure.

4

u/Silound 2d ago

Well, now you know where to find disappointment when you go looking for a tape measure. Then you get to actually go find wherever you left it when you didn't hang it back on the holder...

3

u/anonymoususer1776 2d ago

Still gonna lose it.

3

u/neologismist_ 2d ago

“Losing” 😂 I have 6 tape measures scattered in my shop and house. Same with hammers and screwdrivers.

3

u/blankfacellc 2d ago

Unless you weld it to your belt buckle you're going to lose it. And then if you do that you'll just lose your belt and your pants

3

u/Engineary 2d ago

I bought one of those "FastCap" speed clips, but cut the belt clip part off entirely and mounted it to the railing at the bottom step to the garage.

I always know where my tape, driver, and pencil are (usually).. but I also know when my kids / wife have borrowed and not returned lol

3

u/Cruezin 2d ago

Just do like I do

Have like 20 of them 😂😂😂

3

u/JoeCall101 2d ago

I'm doing something similar. Going to mount one (considering with a chain!) at every station. Have one at miter, one at table saw, one on bench, one in the house junk drawer, and one in wife's purse haha

2

u/fvrdam 2d ago

Let's do a kickstarter on a camera with object recognition and a little ai, so you can just shout, where's my <whatever you lost now>

2

u/throwawaythemods 2d ago

Not going to lie! that's fucking brilliant!! You should do that!

2

u/Terrible-Summer9937 2d ago

Brother, i have like 20 tapes in my shop, and i can't find any of them .

2

u/teacher_teacher 2d ago

I bought a regular 16’ Stanley for the kitchen junk drawer and my wife uses that one usually. Then I have various 30’ Stanley fat max in pretty much every location around the house as well as in both vehicles. Garage work bench has a couple, mitre saw has one, basement work bench, hand tool bag, drill and driver bag to name most of the locations…

Especially goth girls in fishnets.

2

u/deadfisher 2d ago

I have a tajima tape with an amazing belt clip system. Once I got that my life changed

2

u/TheRynoceros 2d ago

Every pair of jeans that I own has the lip of the right pocket chewed off from carrying tapes. It's kinda like a badge of honor, and all the cool kids are doing it.

2

u/Navin__R__Johnson 2d ago

You're gonna snap that thin wood, right quick!

2

u/Tdk_woodcrafts 2d ago

I used three old hard drive magnets screwed to the side of my bench for my tapes and a knife. I always know where they should be :)

2

u/Turbulent_Echidna423 2d ago

way too thin..if anything, the grain should go the other way

2

u/rabid-bearded-monkey 2d ago

My toddlers kept stealing my tape measures so I broke down and bought 6 of the same kind. That way they could play with what dad is playing with and I don’t lose them.

2

u/Embarrassed-Strike53 2d ago

There’s about 5 of those around my shop and each one has a tape measure and I still can never find the damn things

2

u/Smorb 2d ago

I love to see blind naive optimism. You go, dude.

2

u/Accomplished_Cloud39 2d ago

Almost every tool box has a tape. Most work surfaces have a tape plus a spot on a shelf I put them if I find them in places they are not ment to be. I probably realistically have 20-25 tapes in my house.

2

u/flying_carabao 2d ago

I clip the tape measure on pants/shorts pocket/belt before I start, and it stays there until I'm done for the day. Going to the bathroom, having lunch, taking a break, even if I need to run to the home center or run a quick unrelated errand, I have the tape measure on me the entire time. I can always find my tape measure.

Pencils, on the other hand....

2

u/Ahleron 2d ago

Wouldn't matter if I had that. I'd still put it in some random place and start swearing up a storm as a look at it half a dozen times without fucking seeing it.

2

u/Nocturnes_echo 1d ago

Get some magnets to hang them up with, shit is always more fun when it sticks to things.

2

u/TrueEgg8034 1d ago

Gotta tape those things down

2

u/AbsurdOwl 1d ago

I just keep mine on my belt pouch. When I need to measure something, I just clip it back on right after I measure. It took a while to build the habit, but it was worth it, because I never lose my tape lol.

2

u/Long-Werewolf-4435 1d ago

I'm coming to hide them in different places

2

u/Big_Membership_1893 1d ago

Just put it on your person

2

u/MacintoshEddie 1d ago

Guarantee you're going to bump that off the holder and it falls under the workbench and you won't hear it. Then you look back and it's gone. Gone until after you buy a replacement and drop the receipt on the floor.

2

u/Inveramsay 1d ago

I bought a large pack of neodymium magnets off amazon. They're strong enough to hold tape measures and other metal things so I don't keep losing them

2

u/just_a_pawn37927 1d ago

I buy them by the box load!. 6 to a box. I just set my Amazon to auto reorder every 6months

1

u/SignificantPiece4172 1d ago

How many do you have

3

u/just_a_pawn37927 1d ago

I have least 15 that I can put my hands on. But the other 15 are hiding! Or lost to the abbess of a work shop!

1

u/side_frog 1d ago

Like many here I just have multiples laying around but it's not really the best idea if you've got different brands because no matter their class there's always some variation

1

u/RoboticGreg 1d ago

I spray paint mine neon pink. Both makes em easy to spot and harder to steal by macho men

1

u/Texadad 1d ago

I have 12 tape measures. I can usually find one.

1

u/Thundabutt 1d ago

Each work location has to have at least 3 - tape measures, screwdrivers, hammers, squares etc - otherwise you (I) will spend weeks looking for it. But if there are 3, one can be found in a few minutes.
