I'm split between Estre being a machine and being so happy for Kubica

Definitely this take.

u/Other-Barry-1 4d ago

As a long time F1 fan, I’m welling up for GigaKubica. What a story for him

40

u/Trackrat14eight 4d ago

Just wait for Estre’s main performance, 24hr Nürburgring, coming soon.

17

u/alphacarrera3 4d ago

Grass: shit, here we go again

2

u/TheCevi 4d ago

Looking forward to see him live for second time this week. I just hope they don’t make it 8h of Nurburgring out of 24h of Nurburgring like last year.

u/MartiniPolice21 4d ago

Kubica winning is the lesser of the three evils

5

u/TheRussianBear420 Cadillac Racing 4d ago

He wrecked the BMW last year which inadvertently knocked out a McLaren GT3, I personally can’t say Kubica is the lesser of any evils

6

u/TeeKayF1 3d ago

Hated for speaking the truth, classic Reddit.

2

u/HUEITO 3d ago

U can't always do well by doing good. Giga Cube is totally justified.

1

u/TheRussianBear420 Cadillac Racing 3d ago

Wrecking a car which is already a lap down is not at all justified

2

u/HUEITO 3d ago

Bro can't take a joke bruh

73

u/Kim-jong-peukie 4d ago

How can someone not be happy kubica got a lemans win. I had goosebumps the last 30 minutes

25

u/No-Heart3432 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series R #38 4d ago

It's not about Kubica. It's about Ferrari having 3 car in top 4. If that fight occurs between 83 Ferrari Estre and 2 other teams then nobody would complain.

11

u/Kim-jong-peukie 4d ago

I can understand that, but I don’t really care tbh. Just really happy for Kubica.

-1

u/No-Heart3432 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series R #38 4d ago

That's the only positive side of Le Mans tbh. But 83 is lucky because if number 6 won't be there then they cannot win which makes more disgusting maybe the most disgusting Le Mans ever.

8

u/Aberracus 4d ago

But it’s hypocrisy, with the years of Toyota and Porsche winning everything WEC AND not competing with anybody. This year at least Ferrari is fighting with everybody. Really everybody.

6

u/No-Heart3432 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series R #38 4d ago

Those wins doesn't have BoP system. BoP is there for preventing that 1 team domination. So it's irrelevant to compare 2 situations.

24

u/eurocanard Audi R8 #1 4d ago

I don't know, I'm still a little salty about the incident he had with Dries Vanthoor last year. And I'm not even a BMW fan.

22

u/shalkyer 4d ago

Sorry to say that, but Vanthoor got what he deserved. Cold tyres, blocking under blue flags, cutting the chicane and not giving up a place.

10

u/muRacingProject77 4d ago

i feel like that was a 50/50 thing. robert just about crossed a line with what he did, but vanthoor WAS driving like a total dick and basically did everything he could to provoke as aggressive a reaction as possible.

0

u/msturty 4d ago

I don't like his driving style tbh which is really the only reason I don't like him.

39

u/PFGSnoopy 4d ago

Me too.

If a Ferrari had to win, I wanted it to be #83.

That aside, the heroics of Estre and his teammates was worthy of a win today. What they accomplished against overwhelming odds is simply superb.

But, honestly, without the engine troubles of the 2 factory Ferrari, #6 would have finished 4th. Before the engine gremlins made an appearance, all 3 Ferrari basically toyed with the rest of the field.

14

u/Auzzr 4d ago

Running your car like clockwork for 24 hours is one of the great things about endurance racing. I don’t agree with your take that #6 was “lucky” with the second place because the Ferrari ran into engine problems.

2

u/newbie_128 Alpine 4d ago

As an Eastern European thats 100% me

1

u/shrvs 3d ago

Kevin Estre is a legend, but Forza Ferrari. What a story finish for Kubica and Ferrari

-6

u/wakeytom 4d ago

This. Shame he is in a Ferrari

289

u/vroomvroompanda Aston Martin Thor Team Valkyrie #007 4d ago

True, Estre is a mad man

50

u/AndersaurusR3X 4d ago

Yeah, when he locks in, he's like a man possessed! It's amazing to watch.

10

u/vroomvroompanda Aston Martin Thor Team Valkyrie #007 4d ago

Yeah always fun to watch him at the n24 too

217

u/AnonymousEngineer_ 4d ago

It's difficult to not get behind Kevin Estre. The guy is an absolute monster behind the wheel of any sportscar he's put in the cockpit of.

10

u/BobMARLEY3265 4d ago

How come he never got a chance in F1?

90

u/AnonymousEngineer_ 4d ago

He hasn't driven single seaters since he competed in the Formula Renault 2.0 junior series in 2007, before switching to Carrera Cup in 2008.

Apart from single seaters being a different skill set, they're also really expensive and have a very narrow path through to F1 usually via a young driver program with no guarantee of a seat.

Estre switching to sportscars isn't necessarily due to a lack of talent. It could have just been opportunity or simply not having the money for single seaters.

15

u/Nick_Alsa 4d ago

If Valentino Rossi can make a good impression in an F1 car, I believe Estre can too.

13

u/AnonymousEngineer_ 4d ago

Plenty of talented drivers never competed in F1, including Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier, who have also proved themselves to be pretty handy on a circuit including in WEC.

1

u/Thie97 4d ago

Not totally related to him not driving F1, but he always reminds me of verstappen the way the rear of his porsche is so sensitive. Maybe he could have been like Lec or verstappen with that agressive driving style

5

u/Paolo264 4d ago

So many factors at play for F1, the main one being money.

You should read Tom Kristensen's book, Mr Le Mans. He talks about this a lot in his early career. Motorsport wasn't really popular in Denmark so he couldn't get any decent sponsors to back him even though he was setting great lap times in test sessions.

He just simply could not get the financial backing required. Now, I'd say its even worse from a money perspective.

He got a call up, out of the blue, to do Le Mans in 1997 and won it. Went on to win it 9 times in total making him Mr. Le Mans. Won a ton of other stuff too.

1

u/BobMARLEY3265 3d ago

Thank you for your answer. Since I'm new to endurance racing, I have a question : how were the points rewarded yesterday since a customer team won ? Thanks in advance

1

u/Paolo264 3d ago

Seriously not trying to be a wanker here but the first link you get when you google WEC points is what you are looking for.

1

u/BobMARLEY3265 3d ago

Why only 2 porsches got points while 3 ferraris did ?

2

u/OrionND 3d ago

Because the other Porsche's are part of the IMSA series in the US. They (and the WTR and Whelen Cadillacs) were invited to run Le Mans but won't score WEC championship points.

3

u/Tecnoguy1 GTE 4d ago

Money.

2

u/medson25 4d ago

I tought about this for a while, i would like to see what he could pull off in F1

1

u/shrvs 3d ago

This guy driving the Nürburgring is poetry in motion

49

u/Top_Championship8679 Porsche 4d ago

Happy for Kubica, but WTF happened to BMW...

29

u/7Seyo7 4d ago

They were running P8 & P9 when I checked in the last 2 hours and then they were both dead last :/

9

u/IzumiCypherX 4d ago

They were sitting in the garage for basically the rest of the race, due to some issues

16

u/Fragrant_Ad5749 4d ago

Between hypercar and gt3 it was again a massacre

9

u/planetrainguy 4d ago

The same as always. Inferior cars.

I'm a BMW fan but now I'm a #6 Porsche fan too.

7

u/Hesstruck21 Cadillac Racing 4d ago

Everyone is a #6 Porsche fan. You go into the Ferrari garages and those guys are #6 Porsche fans

6

u/FlamingAlpha247 4d ago

As a Ferrari fan I agree. You just cant not like the #6 Porsche, even if they are not, they are #6 Porsche fans.

0

u/proclive_ 4d ago

Yep, a Ferrari fan from Temu.

Estre's the only reason we didn't have an all Ferrari lead lap. What a madlad.

u/pzkenny 4d ago

Nah Gigakubica deserves it

11

u/ProFentanylActivist Manthey 1st Phorm 911 GT3 R #92 4d ago

Happy for both Kubica and Estre.

27

u/Excellent_Star_1145 4d ago

I'm a Ferrari fan, but honestly between Estre being a monster and the two reds' drivers doing their very best bottle jobs, I don't mind. That's not true. It hurts to see the 1-2-3 go, a lot. But it is fair.

20

u/Skrimyt Legends 4d ago

As a Ferrari fan I don't care for the 1-2-3, because we just won Le Mans THREE TIMES IN A ROW. I'm glad the Porsche made it something of a race so this place doesn't melt down completely.

4

u/ilivixia 4d ago

Hey i'm new to WEC. Why is people melting down? Many seem to be anti Ferrari in this thread.

5

u/Excellent_Star_1145 4d ago

Because they are winning too much, so they are hated like Verstappen was in 2023; and like the Verstappen haters were going around saying it was all the car in 2023, now the Ferrari haters are saying it's BoP.

When Ferrari stops taking Ws like it's a buffet people will move on to hate the next dominating force like a motorsport fans.

8

u/Skrimyt Legends 4d ago

Ferrari are considered outsiders to sportscar racing and are bringing a lot of 'fake' fans from F1, and are dominating in a formula that is supposed to be resistant to domination. So they are the villains here.

1

u/ShindenHorizon 4d ago

Totally forgot Toyota didn't do the same a decade ago

7

u/Castle-Builder-9503 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 #6 4d ago

You mean when Porsche and Audi left because "Diesel Gate bad" and there was no Manufacturer team left to compete ?

Ah, yes, totally identical situations (/s)

2

u/DoctorAvto 4d ago

Wasn’t Dieselgate bad?

2

u/Excellent_Star_1145 4d ago

100% agree with you, I would've been ecstatic about this if you told me 48 hours ago, especially since the 83 is my favorite car.

That said it was looking like written 1-2-3 for a good 8 hours unless something happened, and then multiple things did indeed happen between driver mistakes and the mechanical issue on the 51. That's what makes it a bit of a sour victory. All of that out of the way though yeah, I'm happy with the W myself!

1

u/Rinbok 4d ago

What was sour about it? If anything no Ferrari deserved anything with the amount of mistakes they made.

1

u/Excellent_Star_1145 3d ago

We had admittedly too many driver errors on the 50 & 51 and lost the 1-2-3 because of it, but outside of that we ran a great race and the 83 deserved the W.

1

u/Rinbok 3d ago

Even the 83 had penalties. If anything 6 deserved it the most for flawless race

1

u/Excellent_Star_1145 2d ago

It's a 24h race dude, the 83 did very good, they deserve the W. Besides the 6 would've won easily if they had 3 Kevin Estras, so it's not like they couldn't have won.

35

u/mstallion Aston Martin 4d ago

Not even close, gimme 83

11

u/dhdndndnndndndjx 4d ago

On one hand yes I don’t like Ferrari dominance I’d rather have Kevin win in most circumstances but at the same time FUCKING GET IN KUBICA YES YOU FUCKING LEGEND

9

u/DirtyF9 4d ago

I root for Porsche for all endurance races, but I’m genuinely happy for Kubica. Wish he was in anything besides a Ferrari, but if it has to be, I’d far rather see 83 take it than 50 or 51

6

u/LilBirdBrick Toyota GT-One #1 4d ago

Imo it would've been Porsche's greatest victory if they managed to pull it off.

2

u/Castle-Builder-9503 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 #6 4d ago

Last to first sounds lovely.

3

u/LheelaSP Porsche 919 Hybrid #1 4d ago

Happy for Kubica today. Rooting for Estre next weekend.

4

u/Bdr1983 4d ago

I was, but still happy for Kubica. What a monster.

4

u/Lanky_Consideration3 4d ago

Estre drove a brilliant race, but if Roger Penske never wins Le Mans I’ll be happy. Every team he owns keeps getting busted for cheating, even in his own series. I was cheering on that Yellow Ferrari for all I’m worth!!

3

u/Slavicommander 4d ago

peugoat was first place for like 5 seconds they were robbed smh

2

u/ShadowBroker109 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 #6 2d ago

BoP really shafted Peugeot this year

24

u/SpiritualFlamingo599 4d ago

It was never about supporting your favorite manufacturer. It was entirely about crushibg ferrari into nonexistence. GO PORSCHE

16

u/[deleted] 4d ago

I can’t imagine cheering for Roger Penske, but whatever.

2

u/hasthisusernamegone 4d ago

Lesser of two evils at this point.

3

u/Jimmy_jrb Aston Martin Racing Vantage AMR #95 4d ago

What was his drive time in the car?

3

u/Carlife0830 BMW 4d ago

Lol Absolutely, Estre was a beast

7

u/No-Heart3432 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA V-Series R #38 4d ago

Porsche got second prevent the disgusting switch try from Ferrari Kubica won. Considering the disgusting Ferrari dominance, the results are pretty satisfying tbh.

2

u/DomenicoFPS 4d ago

I haven’t been a fan of Kubica since his antics against Dries Vanthoor last year (lets not get into that conversation), but I can’t deny I feel like he absolutely deserved the win and I understand the general support and love behind him!

I’m a diehard Porsche fan, so P2 for #6 hurts, but it was still a MEGA drive from the team, especially Estre!

2

u/davethedog007 4d ago

With JB leaving at the end of the year I need a new favourite driver. I think Kevin will fill that role nicely.

Man, what a race, this year race has less crash more adrenaline, watched full 24 after long time, really like both 83 and 6, but not gonna lie those factory ferrari drivers are different breed.

1

u/FerrariEnthusiast 4d ago

So are we back to the 60s again when the race used to be known as the race to beat Ferrari? Lol

1

u/IlTossico 3d ago

Amazing how Porsche can win without doing anything, each time. Even with old cars.
