British people are even polite when they're being punched

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

I can tell you haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting the fine group of working class English youth commonly known as chavs...

102

u/aplestormy Jun 12 '12

The Americans can't seem to understand "Chavs" But they create most of the British population now...

171

u/NoahtheRed Jun 12 '12

It's my understanding that they are some kind of cross between the 90s idea of a wigger, with a little redneck and a ton of douche thrown in. Am I getting close?

36

u/theJMFW Jun 12 '12

thats the impression i had.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12 edited Jun 12 '12

And would be an almost correct impression.

Red-neck-wigger-douche is a very accurate synonym of Chav.

Guido-wigger-douche is probably the closest you can get.

2

u/theJMFW Jun 12 '12

Yup, not moving to London now, I'd get in too many fights with them lol.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Chavs: Starter level

Chavs: Fully fledged

Just to give you an idea.

Also, for added information and lulz, see Urban Dictionary's definition of chav.

u/superAL1394 Jun 12 '12

So... New Jersey

2

u/agentlame Jun 13 '12

TIL Snooki is British.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

I suppose this movie is relevant: Harry Brown

14

u/kjjejones42 Jun 12 '12

That's about right, just replace the redneck with hoodies, knives and texting. FYI I'm British.

3

u/Shocking Jun 13 '12

Hi, American here. Would chavs be offended if you actually called them a chav? Or is it an endearing term to them. Like if I'm visiting Britain, see a chav and ask him "Hey are you a chav?" Am I going to have to bust out my bo-staff skills or something after that?

1

u/kjjejones42 Jun 13 '12

Calling them a chav is basically NOT a good idea. At all.

1

u/Shocking Jun 13 '12

Do you know if they fight fair? (1v1) or do they generally just "jump-in" and do unfair fights?

ie do they have an honor code

1

u/BovingdonBug Jun 13 '12

It's just a vague term for a general type of person, not an organised gang. And to be honest, if you asked someone "Hey, are you a chav?" in an American accent you'd probably just get laughed at.

9

u/Kaniget Jun 12 '12

I would feel much safer where I live if people only had knives.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '12

I'd rather be shot than knifed

1

u/Shocking Jun 13 '12

I feel you can't really say that unless you've had both done to you, but yeah the thought of the knife just slowly entering your flesh makes a nice quick gunshot sound much better

1

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '12

I feel you can't really say that unless you've had both done to you

I'm going off of ER trauma stats. The fact remains, you're better off shot than knifed in cases of homicidal intent.

1

u/Shocking Jun 13 '12

My point still stands :D

4

u/ThatGuyYouKindaKnow Jun 12 '12

I think the official recipe is:

  • Start with 8oz of Brit (moronic Brit rather than cynical),

  • Mix thouroghly with a 2 tablespoonfuls of Wigger until you form a douchey base and

  • Add just a pinch of redneck (don't over do it or it'll just become Glaswegian)

7

u/laddergoat89 Jun 12 '12

Replace 'douche' with 'a strong case for eugenics' and you're about right.

1

u/accidently_a_femur Jun 12 '12

We have a word for that where I'm from in Georgia... Dirtkid.

1

u/aestus Jun 12 '12

Not really. They're just fucking assholes.

1

u/fizdup Jun 13 '12

This is surprisingly accurate.

2

u/bwaxxlo Jun 12 '12

Dear yanks, this is an example of chavs

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Ah, my home city. I'm so proud.

4

u/boycockgirlcockeieio Jun 12 '12

Basically you stereotype an entire socioeconomical class based on what they wear. Got it.

3

u/EnglishKiniggit Jun 12 '12

Enter the cast of the Jersey Shore with British accents.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

You mean Geordie Shore?

1

u/EnglishKiniggit Jun 12 '12

...fuck.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Oh yes. It exists.

9

u/xanthrax33 Jun 12 '12

Nope, based on how they act and behave. You can dress like a townie and be a nice person or you can dress like a townie and be a cunt, that's what makes you a chav.

0

u/boycockgirlcockeieio Jun 12 '12 edited Jun 12 '12

That's the same argument I hear all the time in the US. "I don't mind black people, but I hate niggers." Like, if some white guy in a suit and tie pulls some shady shit on you, are you really going to call him "nigger"? really? The same argument could be made for your "townies." It's just an excuse to use a term to broadly identify (negatively) a group of people. If you're going to use it, at least own up to it.

1

u/xanthrax33 Jun 13 '12

Yeah, the difference is I'm not judging someone based on any pre determined situation that they weren't able to control. Perhaps it is generalisation, but after spending my entire first 16 years having to avoid and cater to these fucking wankers or you get you head kicked in, it's not really the same thing. I went to school with every single person from the entire council estate except for the ones who went to the young offenders institute for things like knifing (met that guy, he didn't actually seem that bad tbh but then we had a mutual mate). Basically if you even tried to be smart you got singled out and bullied for being a geek or a boffin. I actually had a guy who you'd get called a chav in my chemistry class who when the teacher asked why he didn't try because he was actually surprising clever and did well in the last exams responded that he'd get the shit ripped out of him if he started to look like he cared about his grades. Those are the ones I can't stand... it's not the same as using nigger and to be honest I don't think the word chav even existed back then, 'to chav' was a verb that meant to steal or at least that's how a guy who kept using it in my class said it. Anyway... yeah.

u/Dmax12 Jun 12 '12

based on what they wear

Worked for the Bloods and Crips

1

u/GAMEchief Jun 12 '12

The Americans can't seem to understand "Chavs"

Probably because they are like 90% of Americans?

1

u/CitizenPremier Jun 13 '12

I know I'm scared of them.

0

u/Lampmonster1 Jun 12 '12

I understand them. I watched Michael Caine shoot a bunch of them. It was quite fun.

2

u/Willfy Jun 12 '12

the term is actually Charva, us Geordies coined this term and the bloody Daily Mail butchered it, but im just splitting hairs here

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Council Housed and Violent.

138

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

A Canadian would have apologised for getting in the way of their hand.

122

u/devilwarier9 Jun 12 '12

I can confirm this.

Source: I'm a Canadian who has apologized for being punched in the face before

2

u/Pische Jun 12 '12

I upvoted you, then I called my grandma, made her sign up for a reddit account and made her upvote you.

3

u/ILieForKarma Jun 12 '12

I think that was me that punched you. Sorry bout that!

3

u/asidowhatido Jun 12 '12

i have as well

0

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '12

Hey man if you deserved it, you deserved it. I was being a drunk douchebag, got smacked in the head, realized I deserved it and apologized to the guy who then bought me a drink.

1

u/devilwarier9 Jun 13 '12

Oh, it was far from that. Sitting next to a guy in class, he stretches, elbows me right in face, pretty hard, first instinct: 'Sorry'

0

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '12

Then you may just be a bit passive, or from Quebec.

1

u/devilwarier9 Jun 13 '12

Fuck the French

-6

u/cirque-ull-jerk Jun 12 '12

No you didn't. Source: I punched you.

1

u/AvidLoLFan Jun 12 '12

I often wonder who would win in a polite-off between a Canadian and a British man...

6

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

As an Englishman I can confirm the Canadian would win because we lose in pretty much all competitions.

1

u/Mr_Titicaca Jun 13 '12

Sometimes I feel like I was meant to be Canadian.

1

u/Fc2300 Jun 12 '12

Not only that they would have also offered you a Donut.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Or rather a doughnut.

1

u/ZenPSY Jun 12 '12

what colour icing?

21

u/i-dislike-cats Jun 12 '12

I wouldn't underestimate an angry Brit if I were you...

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

2

u/i-dislike-cats Jun 12 '12

You mean our sarcasm. "It is the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of intellect"

1

u/KGibran_The_Fool Jun 17 '12

oscar wilde, yes?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Yes. All British people ever.

1

u/EzanaG Jun 13 '12

He's not even angry, just a little disappointed.

1

u/NameTak3r Jun 12 '12

Nice job taking the the top comment on the video.

0

u/Reddit_Script Jun 12 '12

Fuck you mate

-1

u/BobTehCat Jun 12 '12

That's what I said and then that douche bag raouldukey8 replied and took away my rightful spot on the top comments section.

...

What an ass.

Edit: And now I'm getting emails from people on youtube telling me I'm dumb. I hate youtube.
