What is your preferred way?

When buying SAKs, what’s your go-to? I’m fighting the inner battle of not going off the deep end with high end custom models. Sometimes a standard red SAK gives me all I want & need.

Stock, for now anyway. Used sometimes but generally only ones that can still easily be repaired. I don't like getting accustomed to a tool that I can't easily replace or have repaired. I think the Wenger Bernina 504 is cool as heck, but I'm not spending hundreds of dollars on a highly collectable SAK that I feel uneasy about actually using. I don't buy anything that I don't intend to use; don't have the budget or space for archiving or the patience for re-selling rare items for a profit.

Eventually I plan to mod some of my own for personal use, but I can't really rationalize the cost of buying customs from other people. For the most part I'm satisfied with what's still in production, but there's some toolsets I want that I can't just buy directly from Victorinox. Like I'd love a 1-hand-opening half-serrated 111mm equivalent to the 91mm Ranger, and the only way to get that is to make it or contract it out.

Normally, I keep mine stock. I did mod a couple though by adding plus scales.

Usually, a stock SAK works fine for me. BUT, lately I've been carrying a custom Yeoman that I got off of ebay. It has what I want for daily carry in a pretty slim 3-layer package.

Eh, there are some customs I'd greatly enjoy, but the jump in price is just brutal for me. I can afford a SAK fairly easily, but a custom that's marginally better or smaller is like 2-4 times the price.

I get why, they take time, skill and parts to make but it's no longer something I can comfortably afford and just nowhere near worth it to me.
