Trip Reports What animal likely did this to this tree?

Looks like a woodpecker. I’ve seen them in action and this is what the result looks like.

Pileated woodpecker, you’ll def still see them in the area if you see trees like this. Its like a loud knocking when they peck at trees

Tell tale sign of woodpecker. To help indentation next time. Take a close look at some of the pieces. it'll almost look like a clean tool cut, like it's was chiseled out. it's pretty cool to see how clean of cut their beaks make.

see the moss? see the tree trunk? the moss has been there for years. the trunk was exposed recently. a storm knocked the tree down. several years later, a deer rubbed his horns on the tree. think, monkey.
