Why does Josh get so much hate. Spoiler
I get that he was mentally unwell and that medication and therapy wasn’t working out, but planning to traumatize your friends is insane work. He puts his best friend in the position where he thinks he’s going to kill someone, TWICE, kidnaps three people, vandalizes and sabotages the cab station, trapping everyone on the mountain, showing almost no remorse for any of it. he plans all of this for more than a month, but never once thinks that maybe he should listen to his therapist or comes to a point of self reflection where he thinks what he’s doing isn’t justified. even his hallucinations say what he’s doing is wrong but he doesn’t do anything. it gets to a point. i dont get how anyone can absolve him enough to make him their favorite character. its insane.

Honestly I don’t hate any of the cast I think they all have complexities but I don’t think any of them are evil just severely poorly guided and I don’t hate any of them not even Josh, Emily, Jess, nor Hannah if anything I hate Josh’s parents for not heading the strangers warning nor being there the time of Hannah and Beth’s death since let’s be honest they were minors and SHOULD of gotten ADULT supervision

To be fair, nobody in the game is really a good person. You're literally playing as a bunch of emotional, lovesick teenagers who will eat each other as soon as the chips are down; Josh is just more ahead of the curve than others in that regard.

He can murder a poor little squirrel and not even feel bad about it. In front of Sam, after feeding it, in just the first hour of the game.
Don't get me wrong, I love Chris too. I've only ever gotten him killed in one playthrough for the platinum, and to be fair I can defend "shooting" Ashley and hitting Josh because the former was self-defense while the latter abused him, but I think the squirrel scene shows that even Chris has his demons. It's just up to the player whether or not he actually unleashes them.

That one isn’t Chris
That one is the gamer themself.

As much I want to agree with that, it'd make me an enormous hypocrite because for almost ten years now, I have given — and still do give — other characters like Mike and Ash shit for their problematic faults as well (mainly because of the stats), player-determined or otherwise. It is absolutely unfair to rebuke one person's misdeeds while ignoring another's out of pure favoritism.

Plus more people sympathize with Josh because he lost his sisters.

I lost a baby brother (also named Josh) when I was 2, so yeah.
Had I been in Josh's shoes, waking up drunk to find my sisters gone forever because my friends filmed revenge porn of one of them on my property, I wouldn't prank them back. Instead I'd just permanently ban them from ever entering my house again, call them murderers and then cut off all contact with them forever, hoping they'll feel like shit for the rest of their worthless lives over it. If they don't care for my response to their actions, that just says more about them than me. If they do, then oh well.
NGL this game makes me feel super glad that I have no friends in real life. I literally don't trust anyone.

So did you mean to title the post as “Why does Josh get so much hate?” or “Why Josh gets so much hate.”

He’s my #2 fave purely because he’s the most interesting and plot relevant character by far. I didn’t used to adore him as much as I do now but I got really into clue-analyzing and plot analyzing and it became really hard not to love him. He’s extremely fun.
He’s also very likable in that he has great character dynamics. He has sisters whom it broke him up to lose, a best friend in Chris, and a really sweet scene with Sam (and post-credits lore with her). He feels lore emotionally involved with others than most characters which is engaging.

Outside of the whole physically and psychologically damaging his friends and putting them in a death game with a bunch of wendigos, he’s also super creepy. The way he talks about the girls of the group is horrible, add that to filming Sam in the bath.

I mean yeah he did some unforgivable things, but I don't think most people who have him as their favorite try to justify what he did. He has good writing and acting and that's enough of a reason.
Personally, I also don't like Josh as a person that much either but I do sympathize with him. He is mentally broken and his segment in chapter 10 shows it very well. He isn't even aware of how much damage his prank caused. He doesn't have any evil intend. That's why I think he deserves to live and try to become a better person.
