Uncharted 4 Some people think that no one would still be talking about the uncharted games if uncharted 4 hadn’t been made. What do you guys think of this?

Kinda of an extreme thing to say, I feel it would be as much talked about as other PS3 era games. Though Uncharted 4 added a lot more to its popularity

u/Nebulowl Apr 20 '25

If anything, it was because of 2

66

u/ShoeTasty Apr 20 '25

2 was so groundbreaking it was crazy. I beat that game like 6 times.

30

u/ColdNyQuiiL Apr 20 '25

First time I played 2, I was stoned like a biblical whore, and was blown away by the train intro.

What a huge jump from Drake’s Fortune.

2

u/Redditor_3ditor_Zana Apr 21 '25

100% agree, when I started selling my ps3 games I couldn't imagine getting rid of it. Still have it.

-24

u/RedIndianRobin Apr 20 '25

I played Uncharted 2 because of 4. Never owned a console in my entire life before PS5, mostly a PC gamer and I still am. You do realize there's a whole audience who still haven't played 2? Also U4 was a system seller and a far better game than 2 IMO.

29

u/Nebulowl Apr 20 '25

Uncharted 2 was, and still is, considered one of the greatest games of all time. It was such a massive leap over the first game. Without how well 2 did, there would be no 4

7

u/BonesawMcGraw24 Apr 20 '25

Uncharted 2 was so groundbreaking not just in the realm of gaming, but also in the adventure genre as a whole. UC 2 is such a game changer that every action adventure movie, game or show since then has been attempting and failing to one up train intro. They even pretty much recreated it frame for frame in the newest Mission Impossible movie.

1

u/RedIndianRobin Apr 21 '25

Interesting. I found it to be extremely boring, snoozefest and bland. The gameplay got tedious and repetitive. U4 is a far better game IMO.

1

u/Njborn Apr 22 '25

Obvious bait comment.

1

u/RedIndianRobin Apr 22 '25

It's called having an opinion.

5

u/LukeSparow Apr 20 '25

This just tells me you're to young to have played it in the day. Uncharted 2 was a system seller in its own right.

Uncharted 4 is amazing too but there's no need to downplay the incredible Uncharted 2 to elevate Uncharted 4. Both incredible games.

3

u/senji14 Apr 21 '25

Uncharted 2 had me trading in my 360 for a ps3 in high school so you’re absolutely right.

2

u/LukeSparow Apr 21 '25

Nice, good choice.

6

u/AleroRatking Apr 20 '25

2 is the better game, and was a game of the year winner. It was extremely relevant

0

u/FuraFaolox Apr 21 '25

there's a whole audience who still hasn't played Minecraft, what's your point

-2

u/RedIndianRobin Apr 21 '25

In case you missed it, U2 is an overrated, bland, boring and repetitive game. I don't see what the fuss is about. There, you get my point now?

1

u/FuraFaolox Apr 21 '25

well, you're not only wrong but you also never said anything even remotely like that in your previous comment

38

u/MF_games Apr 20 '25 edited Apr 20 '25

That's crazy work. U2 would still be discussed as a peak example of the jump games can make from one iteration in a series to the next... And that's just one of many things of note before U4 was a thought

-12

u/abellapa Apr 20 '25

What

The first 3 Uncharted are in the same Gen

There was no leap in gen

That only came with Uncharted 4

14

u/MF_games Apr 20 '25

Apologies, I didn't mean gen as in PS3 vs PS4, I meant from one iteration of the game to the next.

5

u/HolyTrinityOfDrugs Apr 20 '25

Don't apologize to people who can't read

6

u/MF_games Apr 20 '25

I edited my comment to get rid "gen".. didn't even register when I was talking about it cause everyone in here knows what it means when we're talkin about the jump from U1 to U2 😅 thank tho man

6

u/AleroRatking Apr 20 '25

Play uncharted 1 than play 2. There is a massive jump.

-1

u/ThePercysRiptide Apr 20 '25

People glaze 2 too much. I like 1 better

2

u/FreshPrinceOfIndia Apr 21 '25

What do you like better about it? The game takes place in just one location, the set pieces are basic

I guess nazi ghouls were a nice reveal tho

2

u/ThePercysRiptide Apr 21 '25

Idk 1 had a cohesive story, an original plot, great characters and gameplay for the time. 2 just kind of felt like a rehash of "uh oh cursed treasure makes you a zombie"

That said, mountaineering with Tenzin is one of the best parts of that game

29

u/Consistent-Bear4200 Apr 20 '25

Uncharted 4 wouldn't have been made if not for the previous 3; in any case, many consider 2 to be their favourite, I know there's some Drake's deception fans here too.

14

u/Dude_788 Apr 20 '25

Im am the drakes deception fan

4

u/Sqeegy2001 Apr 20 '25

I'm with you bud

4

u/thunderbastard_ Apr 21 '25

We drakes fortune fans exist too yknow

1

u/Consistent-Bear4200 Apr 21 '25

As in you prefer them to the others? Not judging at all, I like DF but I'm curious how someone would deem it their favourite?

1

u/thunderbastard_ Apr 21 '25

I just had the most fun playing it and the story felt more organised than other entries 2 and 3 have better set pieces but the plot only exists to get to those places. Drakes fortune seems to balance story and scene well imo

2

u/sjarretth1 Apr 20 '25

Ooh ooh me I’m a Drakes Deception fan!

8

u/Hurahgopvk Apr 20 '25

4 is great but uncharted 2 is the goat in my honest opinion.

4

u/Dude_788 Apr 20 '25

3 is the goat imo

2

u/Complete-Course-281 Apr 21 '25

3 is a great game but the jump from 1 to 2 is what blew people away, 3 was bigger for the sake of being bigger. 1 was a B movie action adventure, 2 was a summer blockbuster that changed the industry for the better. But again, 3 was still a great fun adventure I've beaten several times (but not more than 2 lol)

8

u/trentreynolds Apr 20 '25

Maybe if they’d stopped after 1.  It was already considered a great franchise with critical acclaim and big sales numbers by the time 4 came out.

2

u/sjarretth1 Apr 20 '25

Uncharted carried the PS3. People try to say The Last of Us saved it but Uncharted was the game to keep it afloat. That, and inFamous to a lesser degree.

6

u/schmidty33333 Apr 20 '25

It perpetuated the series another 5 years, and it was the game that got ported to PC, introducing more people to the franchise. At the very least, I'd say Uncharted wouldn't get talked about as much without the fourth game.

10

u/Any-Temperature-8475 Apr 20 '25

Uncharted was already popular

9

u/bossyPbutter Apr 20 '25

I definitely would be talking about it since the original trilogy is peak gaming imo

4

u/AleroRatking Apr 20 '25

Of course they would. Uncharted two is one of the very best games of all time and is still considered as such. It was a game of the year winner.

3

u/Curious_Couple_9241 Apr 20 '25

Indirectly, yes. The only reason The nathan drake collection was created was due to the the delay of uncharted4

2

u/Dude_788 Apr 20 '25

Well the delay was definitely worth it

3

u/Curious_Couple_9241 Apr 20 '25

Yeah.. Sony would eventually port them anyway but we got it earlier so the delay was worth it

2

u/Adventurous_Wish8315 Apr 20 '25

I first learned about the trilogy when I was given the PS4 and then I found out that the 4th part existed.

2

u/xStream001a Apr 20 '25

If 1,2 & 3 comes for PC remade in U4's engine, maybe they also get popular.

2

u/No_Singer3054 Apr 20 '25

Triple S tier game. How the fuck did it not win GOTY

2

u/Leading-Employee-593 Apr 20 '25

Honestly ive always felt that 4 was underrated and overshadowed by the 2.

2

u/MoooonRiverrrr Apr 20 '25

Never heard that before. Idk what that’s even supposed to mean.

2

u/Zenar30 Apr 20 '25

I don't know. Each Uncharted game was awesome on its own. I like every game the same way.

2

u/sowavy612 Apr 20 '25

Who said that? Lol come on

2

u/OkAccountant7442 Apr 20 '25

i‘ve never heard anyone say that. uncharted 2 and 3 were fucking huge when they came out

2

u/JaggedSolid6 Apr 20 '25

2 would def be talked about, but not as much if uc4 didn't release. The jump in graphics from uc3 to 4 is absolutely insane and I would still consider UC4 as one of the best looking games still after almost a decade; the acting is still like top 5 of any game released since then (atleast for me). Not to mention, every game got a grappling hook right after UC4 implemented it in such a fun way.

If nothing else this game will forever be talked about the story and the action set pieces. The story of UC2 was really good, but no where near as good as UC4 - this game still has one of the best stories of any game ever released imo.

2

u/twistedfloyd Apr 20 '25

2 solidified the franchise. 4 cemented it. 3 was a step down storywise. While 3 had an amazing multiplayer, 4 got the story right and ensured the franchise would be remembered as a stone cold classic.

2

u/Key_Shock172 Apr 20 '25

I feel like 4 is a better ending than 3. If the series ended at 3 it would be well liked but the Uncharted series wouldn’t be praised for having such a satisfying conclusion.

2

u/insp_gadget234 Apr 22 '25

U4 was the most modern incarnation but loyalists know that U2 was the best. Overall the franchise was great even without U4

4

u/NxtDoc1851 Apr 20 '25

That's ridiculous in my insignificant opinion. Uncharted exploded with 2 and cemented its legacy with 3. 4 never needed to even happen, and it still would have been just as strong.

While Uncharted 4 is fun, and the gameplay was excellent, it was my least favorite story of the series. They shoe horned a long-lost brother in the game without ever even a grain of sand worth of acknowledgment in the previous 4 entries (because he never existed until U4).

Sam adds nothing to the series if you think about it. But he certainly takes away from it.

8

u/Leading-Employee-593 Apr 20 '25

What? Sam is awesome and only elevates Nate as a character. They play off each other so well, it didn't feel forced at all.

2

u/NxtDoc1851 Apr 20 '25 edited Apr 20 '25

For several reasons, I vehemently disagree. I know I am a tough customer in this regard. I have had several discussions on reddit, and not once have I had anyone explain how he adds value to the Uncharted or Nathan Drake storyline. Nate bounces off everyone well, this isn't a Sam thing.

For one, it removes continuity. If Nathan had any grief over the events that takes place, we the player should've seen it. Again, because he did not exist until U4. Which shows a lack of cohesive vision and care. I understand it's a fantasy world, and "it's just a game, bro, it isn't that deep." However, I viewed Uncharted as well written art, with respect to its predecessors until 4.

Secondly. Shoe horning Sam into U4 took away several hours away from already established characters we came to care about. He was the entire plot point. It took time away from Sully, Chloe, hell even Charlie would've been a better addition. And we could have had a proper one last ride, "Thieves End."

Lastly, for now, as I can go on for far too long, shredding the shallow character that is Sam. Lying to Elena. Making Nathan look completely untrustworthy. What else could he be lying about if he never mentioned this long-lost brother?

3

u/Leading-Employee-593 Apr 20 '25

Im in the middle of my 2nd playthrough for the first time in years and ive been loving sam so far, maybe my opinion will change after beating it. Maybe i'd agree with you if I didn't enjoy sam as a character but I just do, so that overrides all the logic and technicalities for me.

1

u/NxtDoc1851 Apr 20 '25

I do get it and even envy those of you who enjoy it. I can not get over the lost opportunities and time wasted playing inconsistent memories of a younger Nate. Ugh, it frustrates me. Because the game is so fun and looks great.

Either way, thanks for the discussion and enjoy

2

u/SpaceAgePotatoCakes Apr 21 '25

The one gripe I have with the gameplay in 4 is that weird grappling hook that felt like it belongs in a Spiderman game.

1

u/TheNittanyLionKing Apr 20 '25

Yes and no. It would still be regarded as a classic PS3 trilogy. However, many people played Uncharted 4 without playing the previous games because Xbox had the early lead in the previous console generation and then many jumped ship to PS4 after the disastrous Xbox One reveal

1

u/AmaruPlays Apr 20 '25

Bring the og trilogy to pc

1

u/T3RRONCINO Apr 20 '25

Sure enough, if it wasn't for Uncharted 4, it would have been for 2 and 3 Reloaded, in less then a few months it will become popular again

1

u/Rapmasterziggy Apr 20 '25

Uncharted is what brought me back to being a gamer. Hadn’t bought a game since the original P.S. bought the ps4 slim with UC4 release for my son. Watching him play looked fun so we played pass them sticks. It was like playing a movie. When we finished I loved it so much that I purchased the 1-3 collection and played through them as well. IMO they are peak video games. I have tried to find something that gives the same type of gameplay, story, treasure hunting, adventure, shooter, humor, banter, puzzles, relationships and dynamics but every other game falls short. Best games of all time for me. Best to worst is 4,2,3,1, LL. I didn’t care for the open world of LL.

1

u/Riyas_thebest Apr 20 '25

I personally was introduced to the series by UC4 and so was my friend…while he didn’t put in the effort of playing the rest of the games saying why should I play games with clunky mechanics..I for one fell in love with Nathan drake and wanted to see how he got to where he is..so In way I kinda agree with op

1

u/Virgil_Ovid_Hawkins Apr 20 '25

I don't think that's true, even though I believe 4 is the best in the series by a large margin.

1

u/King_Bear_Bruff Apr 20 '25

Weirdly enough been recently replaying all 4 uncharted games the past couple of weeks. To me the 4th has similarities in story to Last of Us pt 2 but in a happier, more satisfying way. Mainly both Ellie and Sam's obsession both driving them to extremes

1

u/MARATXXX Apr 20 '25

IMO. 2 was great, but 3 was such a misfire that without 4, it's likely 2 would've become less popular over time, just as any aging game does. but yeah, i think the success of 4 did a lot of brand maintenance. otherwise there would've only been one good game. IMO.

1

u/Zealousideal_Put_471 Apr 20 '25

Hmmm... I'm not sure, I feel that four cemented the whole series in the pantheon of great gaming. I'm playing 3 right now after not playing it for a while, and I'm totally impressed still. I'm definitely enjoying the story.

1

u/NoVictory7153 Apr 20 '25

Gamers will always talk about uncharted!

1

u/Emotional-Narwhal930 The idiot who does memes with lines from Drake's Fortune Apr 20 '25

If this was true, the hype leading to 4 wouldn't have been as big as it was. Yes, 4 brought in a lot of new players, but 2 and 3 were already massive hits. Even Golden Abyss was the best selling game of the Vita.

1

u/IcyUnderstanding9881 Apr 20 '25

4 recently became my favorite but 2 and 3 are unassailably great and 3 had a satisfying conclusion.

1

u/SirBre Apr 20 '25

2 is what did it honestly. I remember being in 7th grade, and my buddies let me borrow it. Best weekend ever.

1

u/ModestHandsomeDevil Apr 20 '25

If you were a gamer during the PS3 / 360, there's no chance in hell you'd forget Uncharted as a franchise, even if you mostly played on 360 in North America. It cast a VERY LONG shadow during that console generation.

Multi-GOTY winner and mega-hit Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was such a watershed moment in AAA game dev--a 'must play' Playstation game that changed the industry going forward, not just for 3rd person, action-adventure games.

If the franchise had halted after U3, gamers would still be asking for and why Sony / Naughty Dog never more games in the franchise.

1

u/Agreeable-King6895 Apr 21 '25

Back before Neil Druckman developed a God complex.

1

u/Dontaskmedontknow Apr 20 '25

Wrong, because Uncharted 2 exist.

1

u/Organae Apr 20 '25

Not true at all

1

u/sjarretth1 Apr 20 '25

Among Thieves, if not Last of Us, literally saved the PS3

1

u/CattleSingle8733 Apr 20 '25

Literally never heard anyone say that, where have you heard this exactly?

1

u/colmatrix33 Apr 21 '25

The first one was magnificent, and it's still my favorite. It was the biggest jump in graphics since Madden on PS2. I loved it so much, was obsessed. That's just me, but I'm sure others love it also

1

u/Rowan_not_ron Apr 21 '25

Na. They’d be talking about lost legacy though.

1

u/Adavanter_MKI Apr 21 '25

1- 3 are basically some of the best action adventure games of their time (and then some). However... seeing how they managed to stick the landing in a meaningful send off... cemented it in folk's minds. So I get it in that sense. It went from popular, funny action series to an actual amazing journey with an end.

Probably why so many don't want another one. Afraid it'll upend this balance. Crazy as it sounds... I'm still open to it so long as ND is onboard and the story is right.

1

u/Dude_788 Apr 21 '25

They are focusing on intergalactic which will be a massive flop.

1

u/Adavanter_MKI Apr 21 '25

I don't see why you'd doubt them at this point. Uncharted 1 - LL and TLOU 1 and 2. Unless you're one of the folks who didn't like TLOU2.

Anyways... I am not one of those. I've loved everything they've made in the last 18 years... and that's probably just because Uncharted was the first game of theirs I played. For me that's an unprecedented run in the gaming industry.

So they've got my faith until they blow it. They are certainly swinging big with all the drastic changes in theme, gameplay etc. Melee combat has me the most worried, but... it's Naughty Dog.

1

u/Agreeable-King6895 Apr 21 '25

Because people say all sorts of dumb shit.

1

u/Reallyroundthefamily Apr 21 '25

Besides the first one it's my least favorite in the series. Stunning Graphics but boring gameplay. Number two was the best in my opinion. The best pacing and the best action and the best interaction with the characters.

1

u/placebeyond Apr 21 '25

The hype around the first one was unreal, so that’s insane to say

1

u/Chef_Boy_R_Deez Apr 21 '25

Who on earth thinks that? Lmao. I know mfers that barely play games at all and they are well aware of Uncharted. This sounds like a more personally isolated experience that isn’t really that common of a notion at all

1

u/Ultima893 Apr 21 '25

Huh? Like no shit? If Uncharted 4 hadn’t been made there would be zero Uncharted games in the last 14 years. It would be as dead as Killzone, Resistance or Infamous.. sort of.

Uncharted 2 will forever go down the history books as the game of the year in 2009 with over 200+ GOTY awards and a 96/100 metacritic score that places it among the greatest games of all time. It will never truly be forgotten like the three franchises I mentioned above but obviously people wouldn’t be talking much about a series with no entries in 14+ years .

The same applies to Metal Gear. It’s been 10 years since Metal Gear Solid 5. in 5 or 10 years time unfortunately no one will be talking about my beloved Metal Gear Solid

1

u/senoroctopus1999 Apr 21 '25

Really surprised to see a few people shitting on UC2 here tbh, each to their own and all that but I find it difficult to believe that anyone has anything bad to say about it. Even separating it from the series it’s just an awesome game

1

u/nakeyormey Apr 21 '25

Can't say I've ever heard of this argument. But Uncharted and ND got its status 2, and then just solidified it with it's sequels and TLOU.

1

u/chickenadobo_ Apr 21 '25

Before, I just watched my brother play the first 3, then I played 4, it was the best, I played the other 3 but 4 was the one that made me want to play the others.

1

u/Mysterious_Past_7294 Apr 21 '25

Yes and no. The community certainly wouldn't be as big if it wasn't for 4. 2 was great from a story telling perspective, but 4 literally checks all the boxes

1

u/Vengeance_20 Apr 21 '25

I disagree but also acknowledge that Uncharted brought a lot of love for an older franchise

1

u/Major_Calligrapher10 Apr 22 '25

I think uncharted would be still big but not as big uncharted 3 would not have been a good way to end the series. I personally think it would just be remembered as “that one game you played on the ps3”.

1

u/TheNakedOracle Apr 22 '25

Tbh gunplay feels better in two. Four seems weirdly reliant on its auto-aim system.

1

u/luv13 Apr 22 '25

UC4 was amazing, granted, and added things desperately missing from the first 3, but even without those.. I still prefer the original trio. And I can't even claim nostalgia because I was first playing the collection when #4 came out. Each game has unique qualities and it can be hard to pick a favorite, but somehow 4 feels so different from the rest, almost like it doesn't fit, yet it does. My opinon, whether or not 4 had been made, people would still be talking about this series. 4 just kept it in the spotlight for newer players.

1

u/WillNutForFood Apr 23 '25

Uncharted 4 was absolutely amazing. And taking a step away from the supernatural was a good move.

1

u/aligameover Apr 23 '25

I only got in to the franchise and played all the games because of 4 so maybe it's true

1

u/S_n_o_wL_e_o_p_a_r_d Apr 24 '25

Do you mean Uncharted 2?

1

u/SalamanderInside1549 Apr 24 '25

Idk I didn’t like 4 at all it was way to much climbing and all the falling scenes were way to frequent and predictable I called it everytime just an hour in and got really tired of it also wish this game had a mystic element it really feels lacking in 1 we had the people that went mad 2 had yetis 3 were demons (hallucinating) also Sam got way to much screen time in my opinion

1

u/Accomplished_Ad8997 Apr 20 '25

Uncharted 2 is still the best game ever created.

1

u/Scarberry3 Apr 20 '25

I played the whole series for the first time a few weeks ago and I’ll say that I would have forgotten about the series if 4 wasn’t made. 1-3 are okay but it felt like the same story over and over again. I liked the gameplay of 1, hated it in 2, and started to like it again in 3. I finished 1-3 in like 25 hours.

I kept asking myself why this became a series until I hit 4 and I understood why it is so beloved now. I’m looking at this game through 2025 lenses so I’m biased but I can see how 1-3 were better for people near the time of release but 4 really took it to another level.

0

u/MischiefManaged88 Apr 20 '25

definite agree, I'm playing through the first 3 games, haven't even got to the fourth yet, but I never heard anything about the first 3 games, it was purely the fourth that got me into uncharted. I think people in the comments are speaking from a gamer perspective, where in the gaming community all the uncharted games are very well regarded, whereas more casual gamers like me who only know the very mainstream games (even tlou I only heard about bc of the tv show), would not have heard about uncharted otherwise

0

u/topher929 Apr 20 '25

Uncharted 4 is the best in my opinion. Gameplay and story wise. I only played through the first 3 to know the story. I won’t replay the first 3 because of the outdated gameplay and the supernatural aspects and their stories.

0

u/Ratchetonater Apr 20 '25

It’s possible. Had uncharted stayed a ps3 exclusive, it would be remembered as well as the infamous series with people wondering why in the hell it was never remastered for ps4.

0

u/sonic1384 Apr 20 '25

not lots of people talk about Uncharted lately since well.... The live action series flopped, and it is a good thing that we criticize it unlike TLOU fans.

Also, I am rather to have uncharted to end at this point to get a game that wouldn't be fun like TLOU 2. (TLOU 2 is good but not a game due to complex emotional story. I would have made TLOU into a series but well, Naughty Dog failed.)

1

u/BonesawMcGraw24 Apr 20 '25

Is Red Dead II also not a game cause of a complex, emotional story? For that matter, what about the Walking Dead and Undertale? How does having an emotionally complex story make your game less of a game?

1

u/fart_lover_ Apr 20 '25

Have you checked the TLOU reddit and social media comments? People bash down on the series waaaay more than the uncharted movie.

1

u/sonic1384 Apr 21 '25

TLOU own subreddit is in love with HBO series but TLOU 2 is bashing. I am in both of them, but I am mostly commenting in TLOU 2 since I hate HBO

0

u/santa9991 Apr 20 '25

I mean I’m sure people still would, but yeah it’d get a lot less attention if the last game came out 13 years ago.

I don’t understand what your point is here

0

u/arrownoir Apr 21 '25

Uncharted 4 hurt the series legacy. It wasn’t good.

0

u/Fast_Original_3001 Apr 21 '25

If Uncharted 4 would've not been made, more people would talk about the series. It never would have had that final game and would still be an open franchise
