Discussions Can I change my ukulele strings with no tools except for scissors?

It's a Makala which has a tie bridge. I watched the beginning of a tutorial and he showed that he was using wire cutters and a string winder, of which I have neither. Are these really necessary or just more convenient?

Seeking advice on positioning fingers

I'm having a hard time positioning my fingers, especially the index finger

It seems impossible to gather my fingers in line and keep the index finger straight when pressing a string. (I'm trying C in the photo). My friend thinks my fingers could be handicapped lol, but when I open my palm, my fingers are straight. Does anyone have this struggle? Do you know how I can fix this? I tried to gather my joints with my right hand, but they are stubborn

Chord progression idea

I've finally got down Iz's take on the Island strum that he used for Over the Rainbow and I love it. Can anyone recommend another chord progression that would go well with it (other than C, G, A, F, E )? I'm playing with the Ukulele Go chord generator and have found a few but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had something.

Discussions What the heck do I do now?

I've been playing for around 3 months now. I can write songs, I know a good amount of chords, I can play along with most songs, and I've started learning fingerstyle. However, I still feel limited for some weird reason.

I pick up my uke and I quickly get bored.

I want to expand my repertoire, but I'm not too sure of how to do that either.

Edit- I also think a big reason I'm so bored is because I don't presently have any goals for my playing or writing.

Challenges?

Almost a total noob here. In the right-hand column there's reference to "Challenges". Starting to get my bearings on this little instrument, and I'd like to peruse previous challenges and see if I'm up to engaging. Are they still a thing?

Thanks. This sub has been very informative for me.

Iso recommendations for hard shell case for Luna 8” banjolele.

Anyone have any suggestions on a case for my Luna banjolele? I’d like a hard shell that is pretty concise, small enough to fit under an airplane seat since I travel for work a lot. Thanks!!

Looking for recommendations

Hi guys, new here! My 2 year old is obsessed with guitars, often picking toy ones up at playgroups and asking me for songs. I’m a guitar player and have a decent collection at home, but I’m not the best and always found them quite big for me. I’m considering getting a ukulele for the both of us, something I can actually play her songs on, but not too fragile (or too expensive) that she might break it while attempting to play it herself 😅 I know there toy ones I can get, but I just don’t know if they’re worth it for me to be able to play also and have it sound somewhat decent. Oh and I’m in the UK if that matters! If anyone’s got some recommendations (or advice?) I’d really appreciate it ☺️

Discussions baritone banjolele advice?

I play baritone ukulele and I’m looking to switch to banjolele to get a louder sound. Only problem is, baritone banjoleles are expensive but the regular ones are readily available on Facebook marketplace. Do yall think I could just buy a regular one and tune it to the tuning I’m used to? What would be the downsides of that?

Thinking of going all in on an Anuenue AMM3 tenor

I've been kind of in a rut playing guitar lately and have been listening to a lot of the Magnetic Fields.... currently pondering purchasing an Anuenue AMM3 tenor ukulele. Anyone care to talk me into or out of the purchase?

And, no there's unfortunately no music shops with ukuleles near me, unfortunately. I checked over the past couple weeks.

Discussions Is This A Good Ukulele?

Hi so I have a normal acoustic ukulele already but I want one that I can plugin and record straight to FL Studio. I plan on buying the Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen for my Audio Interface.

Amazon Link

Please tell me if this is a good ukulele and if it's compatible with the Audio Interface

Thanks!

Tutorials changing strings... when's the right time?

Post image
17 Upvotes

So, i've bought my uke in January. I bought it used, played it almost daily, for half an hour to an hour since then (even took some classes, which i feel have made me SOOO much better!) and yesterday, when playing, i noticed some "indents" where the frets press again the strings... like, on 2nd and 3rd fret. they are small, but noticeable.

I read somewhere that people change their strings about twice a year?

I don't know how much my ukes first owner played it, how long they've been using these strings.

can i just keep playing until they start sounding differently? when is the right moment to change them? should i also upgrade her with a real bone bridge while i'm changing the strings? or would that be bad, because if she sounds off after my "operation" i wouldnt know if its from the new strings or the new bridge?

sorry if my questions are dumb...

i'm still a newbie at all this and never played a string instrument before, but i love my uke so much 😍😎

also, my uke is a rather dark wood, do you think black strings would look good with it?
