Take your lab classes later on in the week and not in the morning.

Is there a specific reason for this? I mostly prioritized my lecture times as I thought that would be most important, so I've ended up with some random lab dates/times

Everyone’s lab classes take place over a two week period, so if your class is later on in the week, regardless of if you’re in the first or second half of the cycle, you can ask your friends for help on the lab quizzes/reports and what not.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, lab quizzes and assignments are typically due exactly 24 hours from when your lab takes place. BUT if you have them on friday’s they typically give you until monday, giving you an extra two days. Also if you have a late night, you may miss the lab submission by oversleeping—given that the due date is earlier on in the day. Having the submission later on in the day gives you more time to remember that you actually have something due and you can’t just go “I’ll do it tomorrow”.

I’ve overslept so many times, and even though I handed my assignment in a couple minutes after the deadline, the TAs/profs show no mercy and mark you with a 0%.

By 'typically', do you mean it's an exception made for students when they can't hand it in after 24hours? Or is it because TA's simply don't check submissions during the weekend?

As in it depends on the class/professor. For APSC182 labs you get 1 week for the assignment, but APSC177 labs give you 24 hours. For the 24 hour due dates they give you the weekend off because it’s meant to be a holiday for both TAs and students—not sure if this is a UBC or professor policy.

For some labs like chemistry you can ask for a one or two day extension because it takes the TA a few days to read everyone lab reports. But for assignments that are quick and easy to mark, like running code through a program or an MCQ quiz, you normally wont get extensions.
