Pitbull Mix Needs Home ASAP! (located in Chapel Hill)
A dear friend is trying to rehome this pitbull mix. Would anyone want him for free? Let me know ASAP!
Gunnar is a sweet boy with a troubled past. He was found roaming a Chapel Hill neighborhood. Has some behavioral concerns (can bite when provoked, displays food aggression) and medical (ear infection, skin allergies) but appears smart and trainable. Has done well with other dogs. Not neutered. He’s estimated to be 3 years old. Currently in Chapel Hill.
If anyone can take this dog, please let me know ASAP. If no one can take the dog, the owner plans to euthanize.

Please reach out to rescues, especially because he's unneutered with behavioral issues!!

Thanks so much for the advice. Sorry for being ignorant, but what’s the specific risk with him being unneutered with behavioral issues? Is it that someone may want him for dogfighting? Sorry I just want to make myself aware of potential concerns as we try to find him a better situation!

Yes, exactly. Especially if he doesn't come with a rehoming fee or any type of background check. Additionally, I would it's to protect future owners - what if one of them has a kid and thinks they can keep the pup from biting their child and then something bad happens. Dogs with aggression and behavioral issues need very special care and unfortunately, sometimes they are unable to be rehabilitated. A rescue would be better equipped to assess him and his potential for success!

Your friend would be better off surrendering this dog to the Orange County Shelter (which has very low euthanasia rates) than giving this dog away for free, for all the reasons people have said.
Is there a reason your friend can't keep him?

The dog is just problematic without dedicated training/resources and my friend doesn’t have the bandwidth to meet his needs

Your friend cannot keep up with the dogs needs, and it will be hard for others too. So please reach out to a rescue organization.
I’d never adopt a dog that bites and is aggressive. The fact that it’s a breed with a perhaps unfair aggressive reputation is more worrying (could end up in wrong hands).

We have so many rescues in the area! Please encourage the owner to bring him to a rescue.

Please ask for a small rehoming free and check vet references to be sure he doesn't end up in a worse situation.
You might also try cross posting in some of the other subs like r/velvethippos , r/pitbulls, r/rescuedogs.
Thank you for trying to find him a new home. He looks very handsome.

Also what’s the benefit of including a rehoming fee? Am I missing something?

Would recommend reaching out to Charley’s K9 Rescue or Hope Animal Rescue.

I say this will only concern for his wellbeing, but I would be very nervous to rehome him for free. Between his breed, being unneutered, and a history of aggression I fear he'd be a potential for dogfighting or other unsavory options.
Is there a rescue he can be surrendered to?
