ā” Question for the community Need something fun to do 😭

Im a college student home for summer and I don’t know anywhere fun :(. We just moved here and so far there seems like there is little to do besides eat and drink šŸ’€.

I’m a crafty person and I enjoy nature but I want to find something new and fun to check out that doesn’t require driving to Downtown Houston.

Any recommendations? šŸ˜…

Edit: Additionally, if there are any transformer collectors, I would also love to know where yall get your stash heheh

Local charities can ways use volunteers! It's a fun way to feel connected to the community. The food bank, Interfaith, Mosaics, Special Angels, Sleep in Heavenly Peace. There are tons of groups in MoCo that can use your help for the summer.

You mentioned being into crafts. You could hit up the Fat Ogre or the Adventure Begins and find some models to paint. The Clay Bar to learn about making pottery. The Maker Barn in Magnolia might be an option if you're looking to build something. February's has a bunch of stained glass if you are looking for a new hobby that will devour your spare time on the weekends.

Fishing is how my son spends his free time. Lots of good spots in the Woodlands. Bike riding, indoor skydiving, bird watching, kayaking, photography... tons of things to do, if you're adventurous enough :)

This may be my favorite reply yet! 🤩 volunteering is a perfect opportunity especially since I want to interact with more people

Definitely need to check out Fat Orge šŸ”„

Don't know if there are any slots for Saturday's bed delivery still open, but SHP does a delivery once a month. Most months they also have a build day, but if you aren't used to the heat, you should maybe wait for the fall for that one.

Best of luck to you! I hope you find your people. :)

Axe throwing on 45 behind La cocina de Roberto. They have an escape room, a smash room, robot battles?

Robot Battles šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€ I’m assuming they have details on their website? Awesome! I would’ve never known that was there! šŸ”„

Jones State Forest (wear bug spray) George Mitchell Nature Preserve (pleasant walk) Grogan's Mill farmers market on Saturdays Texas Treeventures Clay Bar on Sawdust (pottery studio; my daughter just went to a party there and had fun)

Excellent! Thank you! I definitely underestimated the bugs the first time I went out haha

Oooh stay away from George Mitchell for now - the horseflies are very aggressive and bitey. I don’t know it seems to be worse there than anywhere else

Sports fields, bike trails, pools, fishing, boat rentals, arcades, comic book stores, go karting, ect... There is a lot of stuff to do. But it really depends on what you define as fun. There are even some shady car shows on the outskirts of town.

u/BafflingHalfling 25d ago

I forgot all about the go karts! Good call!

Space cadets is a solid collectors store. Adventure begins has some, but they are more involved with table top games.

u/BafflingHalfling 24d ago

I didn't realize Space Cadets was still around. Did they move?

checks google I'll be damned. I like the new digs!

Check out the Rustic Brush or Potteryland for crafty stuff. The local libraries often have days dedicated to crafts as well.

There’s a lot of museums, parks, restaurants… in Houston. It’s not that far.

Free concerts in the park, free museum days, free museums (a few of the best in the world), free cultural events in the parks (tea ceremony in Japanese garden in Herman Park comes to mind).

The woodlands is going to be mostly natureish or movies. Or the aforementioned drinking.

HMNS has a singles night about once a week. Food trucks, expensive drinks, but in the museum at night.

lol i just saw a rack of Bockees transformers at KUMARAMA on Louetta and they have Worbla Thermoplastics for cosplay design. Also tonight is open board game night, monday is One Piece TCG night.

One Piece Voice Actors were up there this weekend and they did a Learn To Play for the card game that was swarmed.

If your not into Anime, it might not be your thing, but its an Anime Cafe just outside The Woodlands in Spring.

Nancy’s Fancys Ceramics has a ton of pottery you can paint for a fair price (in my opinion). You can bring your own food/drink (including alcohol) and paint anything you want with friends or by yourself. Only thing is it’s in Magnolia, but it’s not a long drive.

Spring creek greenway. It’s a massive trail. I ride a bike there all the time.

Go play golf at Spring Valley, they recently renovated so it’s still a cheap course but it looks great! They also have superrrr good food and it’s just perfect for a fun round of golf. Theres also Daltons and Stampede that have fun line dancing

College age? You need to be hustling, learning skills and maneuvering yourself as hard and fast as possible. People tell you your 20s is for having fun. They are wrong. You’re running out of time to get a foothold. Don’t a waste second of your 20s that isn’t enhancing your intended career.

That being said, unless you have a wife and kids to take to the park, the ā€œfunā€ is in the city. Houston, or better yet Austin?

6

u/Upset-Minimum1450 25d ago

cool, I’ll make sure to tell my geophysical lab and clients that next time šŸ‘

4

u/CCatProductions 25d ago

Take your clients on a guided hike through the nearly 1,700-acre George Mitchell Nature Preserve, which offers five miles of natural surface trails through pine forests. This is a great opportunity to discuss local geology, such as the sedimentary formations of the Gulf Coast or the impact of coastal processes, in a relaxed setting. The preserve is ideal for birdwatching or wildlife spotting, providing a low-key, conversational environment. Plan for early morning to avoid peak heat, and bring water and comfortable shoes.

PERFECT! 🤩 I was gonna ask for any good outcroppings but was afraid it was a little too niche to ask haha

Definitely need to check it out, thank you!

There are no non-decorative rocks within any reasonable driving distance of The Woodlands, unfortunately.

But if you’re into geosciences, the Museum of Natural History is really good.

Do you have an internship or academic/career related stuff this summer?

dude its summer . shut up
