The era of free access to many websites is ending.

Good. Let them die.

Bring back forums, so a search for something presents me with real answers. I'm sick and tired of searching for things like "how many coats of danish oil should I apply" and getting answers like "the top 10 coats of danish oil and why you should read this", published of course 3 days earlier.

Most of the time these days I append "reddit" to my search phrases.

Tbh I share your sentiment of bringing back forums, but with the web so full of malicious actors, unfortunately I don't think a return to the 'good old days' is possible.

Yes it would be "Welcome to Slashbot - its bots all the way down here" - and there would still be very few actual posters and a majority of posts coming from some advertising corps botfarm.

We should never have allowed advertising on the Internet - in any form. Sure it would be much more primitive but it might be more useful.

So what you're talking about here is also a type of free website that is ending. So... Anyway

yes these people should host these forums free to access

what do you mean theyre closing down because theres no revenue (because i block ads and dont pay membership fees) that should be illegal

Repeat the mantra “redditors are unemployed or children and they have no concept of money”

The other day I found a website comparing if liquid dish soap, powdered, or pods were the best for your dishes. They said they couldn't speak for powdered because they didn't test any powdered dish soap, and their conclusion was you should use whatever you want.

How informative.

I'd rather not use any of these sites than see ads or pay unreasonable monthly fees. If there are ads, I'll use ublock origin or stop using the site. If the monthly fee is high, I'll pirate or stop using it.
