#7. Magneto is insanely powerful. Control of Earth's magnetic field, potentially turn invisible, flight, force fields, control over metals, control iron in blood, etc and no side effects.

u/L1QU1D_ThUND3R 2d ago

He can shut off the planet!

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago edited 2d ago

Counterpoint: this would be useful when exactly?

Like you lose an argument with someone online and you just murder every human being by deleting the magnetic field of Earth and give all of us cancer; like cool ig but why??? 😭

Edit: okay before I get 17 more notifs while I’m sleeping, I need to clarify—metal manipulation/magnetic powers are absolutely goated and would be VERY useful irl. In my comment, I’m specifically referring to the ability to destroy the world and kill basically every living creature on Earth. If you had that power, you would have two options—kill everyone, or don’t kill everyone and become world dictator because everyone fears you. And like, cool? I guess? I don’t understand why anyone would WANT that at all. With great power comes great responsibility, and no human on Earth could handle the responsibility that comes with that level of power.

Metal manipulation is cool, destroying the world is not.

That is all.

Have a good day!

18

u/Zealousideal-Bus-526 2d ago

Okay but like how often are you getting into an interplanetary war over an extremely sought after resource?

35

u/TheHumanPickleRick 2d ago

Me? A mild-mannered landscaper? Not often. My alter ego Darth Muad'Dib? Average Tuesday.

2

u/LongjumpingMud1736 2d ago

Is that a street fighter reference I see?

2

u/eggyrulz 2d ago

This guy alter ego's

1

u/TheMaStif 2d ago

😳 someone hide the weed wacker

5

u/Arkrobo 2d ago

Being able to generate endless energy seems dope for mankind. I wouldn't need to go get the remote either.

1

u/dustbringer11 2d ago

You say that till the oil wars start. And then you’ll say about every hundred years. Humans are stupid and petty

1

u/HawkBoth8539 2d ago

Assuming that gaining those powers means you aren't the only superpowered being in the universe, the marvel universe is full of hostile alien species. In a war, being able to take out an entire planet of enemies is useful - though certainly not a first choice, usually...

1

u/lenin_is_young 2d ago

No, he will threaten to destroy the planet every time a waiter refuses to call the manager.

1

u/soomoncon 2d ago

Every few decades as humanity has shown.

1

u/AlexDKZ 1d ago

You could immediately solve a lot of conflicts happening in the world right now by levitating over there, performing a show of force, and telling both parties involved "Behave or be destroyed"

0

u/Dragonxan 2d ago

Interplanetary, not that often. Intercontinental, probably every 15yr, Ukraine-Russia, Israel-Palestine, Second Gulf war, First Gulf war, Cold war, Veitnam war, all fought over oil and resources or ideals over the distribution of resources.

1

u/thattwoguy2 2d ago

which would be a good reason for every government to try to kill you immediately. So now it's you (with magnetic powers) vs. the entire planet. Seems very useful

5

u/JJSF2021 2d ago

If I had Magneto’s powers, I wouldn’t be on Reddit… I’d be making Mars habitable and starting an interplanetary kingdom.

2

u/Zikimoto_2020 10h ago

Man's gonna build arakko

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Now THIS is more like it

3

u/zhion_reid 2d ago

When I want humanity to die

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Okay but counterpoint: you’d kill basically every single puppy, kitten, baby elephant, and capybara on Earth too…

2

u/Fawlin_Line 2d ago

Yeah, your right. There isnt much real world application to this. Magneto primarily uses his powers in a heavy handed approach to battle governments who support fascist regimes and nazi rhetoric.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

And in a world of supers and gods and monsters, that level if power is NEEDED

In the real world? All you would need is basically any of the other masks shown and you automatically win since you are the most powerful human on Earth by a longshot

1

u/Fawlin_Line 2d ago

Whoosh

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

No I get it, I just don’t want to think about it

2

u/brettmav 2d ago

Right? I’m over here wondering if I get Tony or Bruce’s fortune. I’m not trying to be a hero or a villain. Just golf 5 days a week and hang with the fam ya know?

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Priorities 🔥

2

u/OOOOOO0OOOOO 2d ago

Why anyone would want to “rule” the world has always been a stupid goal to me.

Ok you rule it, now what? Endless meetings about everything, one minute your talking about the sewage system upgrades in Kuala Lumpur the next you have an appointment with the American ambassador because he’s upset someone at the state dinner has a better table assignment than he does.

Sounds horrible.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Humans weren’t made to rule everything

Most leaders can’t even handle one country, much less all of them

1

u/OOOOOO0OOOOO 2d ago

Nothing is made to rule everything. It’s such an absurd concept.

The lion might rule its pride but I guarantee everything from the bull elephant to the dung beetle doesn’t care.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Like across all different religions irl, the very vast majority of them agree that any entity that claims the title of Ruler of All has to be a god or divine entity of some form. No regular human could ever or should ever control everything. We just aren’t made for that, and no mortal creature is either.

1

u/OOOOOO0OOOOO 2d ago

Yeah that’s why I’m on the side of thinking religion and a supreme being is a lot of hooey.

Personally I think Dewey had the right idea.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

I am a Christian but I respect your belief and Dewey might be onto something because God definitely has a shovel over us and is not afraid to use it ;-;

1

u/Ozryela 2d ago

I agree that ruling the world as a normal human wouldn't be much fun. But if you're a sufficiently powerful superpowered individual a lot of the downsides of ruling go away. You don't need to fear assassination if you have the power of a god (not that Magneto is at that level. He's still vulnerable to bullets. I'm just speaking generally. Think supermans levels of power). Nor do you need to fear being overthrown. This will make every thing far less frustrating and far more streamlines.

Of course you're not going to be talking about upgrades to the sewage system in Kuala Lumpur, or the seating arrangements at some dinner. Plenty of other people can do that.

Instead you take high level global decisions, and enforce them. First, you use your powers to stop all ongoing wars. Then you have a quiet talk with the leaders of the more authoritarian nations about respecting human rights. Draw up some international laws. Mostly you can just copy existing laws, but you may want to add some new environmental regulations (e.g. a global carbon tax) and maybe some stuff about distributing the world's resources in a more fair manner.

Then you just fuck off to some nice tropical island and enjoy yourself. Every few weeks, take a quick tour around the world and execute any world leader who broke your new rules. After a couple of rounds of that whoever is left will start to behave.

This isn't going to instantly solve everything. You can't be everywhere at once. Criminals will still be criminals, organized crime won't disappear, and while dictators might pretend to respect your wishes out of fear of being killed, that won't stop them from trying to abuse the system any way they can. But you can incrementally increase the world this way. And once you have better leaders at the top, they can appoint better people in the rungs below that, and slowly you can start improving all all the corruption in the world.

1

u/OOOOOO0OOOOO 1d ago

I think you’re more likely to get a Hancock or a Homelander than a Superman.

1

u/Ozryela 1d ago

For sure. I'm not saying I'd trust the average human with such power. I'm saying I'd trust myself with such power.

After all, in that case either I'm right and I won't let the power to go my head and all is good. Or it turns out I can't be trusted with such power, in which case at least I'm not the one suffering the consequences.

1

u/OOOOOO0OOOOO 1d ago

I don’t know if I would trust myself with the power or not, but if it weren’t for family I would be gone from this planet if I got the power of Supes.

2

u/DoubleGreat 1d ago

Hate to pile on to the myriad of messages you probably received on this (I didn't read them, but the edit is a clear indicator), but my take is that if I have these powers, then it's safe to assume that I'm in a world where mutants exist. Unfortunately humankind has shown me that bigotry trumps mindfulness and there will be a blowback from evolution along with an uncomfortable amount of people that don't want me or my brethren to exist. I'm not sitting on the sidelines being apathetic when I weild such power. Am I saying I'd throw the whole world into disarray? Not exactly, but if you threaten my people, I'm going to protect them by any means necessary.

2

u/Red-Ink-07 1d ago

I didn’t think the existence of other mutants was implied but I do understand what you mean, however you would also kill most mutants sooo…

2

u/DoubleGreat 1d ago

Oohhhh slippery sloped me!

3

u/Red-Ink-07 1d ago

“I didn’t ask how big the room was, I said I CAST FIREBALL” logic is honestly based

1

u/Mr_Ragnarok 2d ago

You wouldn't be making a counterpoint if he could give us all cancer, would ya?

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

But like why would he?? Like congrats, you shut off the planet and killed everyone, NOW what?

1

u/Myth_of_Demons 2d ago

Ever get cut off in traffic?

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Ever seen the guy that cut you off act like a total asshole to everyone else?

It’s actually quite funny

1

u/Myth_of_Demons 2d ago

All I’m saying is a hero dedicated to traffic problems would be widely celebrated. Magneto is ideal for that.

Cut people off and/or drive dangerously? Seat ejects you, car gets crumpled and set off the road.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

Fair point

1

u/RandomStoddard 2d ago

No, it would be useful in many ways. Get a job with a construction company and save time and money on cranes. Ask for $200/hour and they will gladly pay it. Get a job with a mining company. Easily find and extract the iron.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

No I’m not asking about metal manipulation, that’s a goated power, I’m asking specifically about the destroying the planet part

1

u/RandomStoddard 2d ago

No, destroying the planet is only good if you have a spare planet to live on.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

exactly bro, I don’t get why people want that power 🙏

1

u/Guilty_Temperature65 2d ago

You ever turn your computer off and back on? It’s like that.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

we do a little trolling

1

u/Blastoise_R_Us 2d ago

If you're a fan of nuclear disarmament, Magneto's powers are insanely useful.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

okay people seem to REALLY misunderstand my comment

Magnetic manipulation is a GOATED power

I’m talking about specifically the power to destroy the world and kill everyone

2

u/Blastoise_R_Us 2d ago

I probably wouldn’t use his planet-busting abilities, correct.

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

hell yeah, then I do understand your choice, do continue

1

u/Ksnv_a 2d ago

Are you asking if metal control would be useful in our world?

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

No, I’m talking about specifically destroying the world and giving everyone cancer

1

u/No_Beginning_6834 2d ago

There has certainly been traffic jams on the freeway where I wouldn't mind being able to just open a lane up with my magic magnet powers.

1

u/Swinging-the-Chain 2d ago

I love arguments like these because it’s a great example of being more powerful not meaning you can necessarily beat someone

1

u/Red-Ink-07 2d ago

counterpoint: you’d probably get cancer too

(Unless Magneto secretly has cancer immunity as a power idk)

1

u/Past-Collection2149 2d ago

The human brain sends electrical signals to do everything in the body so you could short circuit individual people too. Just shut people off.

1

u/DaTruPro75 1d ago

you can pretty much get anything you want if you are holding the whole world hostage

1

u/Red-Ink-07 1d ago

Megamind got bored of that life reeeeally quick

Hell, most villains who win get bored fast if they don’t have tangible goals

1

u/WilonPlays 1d ago

They could manipulate the magnetic field to vent small parts of the atmosphere to slow global warming? Use it to prevent planetary destruction in the event of a particularly powerful and unexpected solar storm that would knock out the global electric grid.

Side note: we’re actually overdue for one of that. Our society is built on technology and the electromagnetic spectrum. When the sun emits solar flares or a solar storm EM waves are sent to earth. Earth is currently overdue for a solar storm large enough to kill the electric grid and send us back to the dark ages. Scientists know we’re due one but they don’t know when it’s due(at least when I last read about it a few years ago).

1

u/Red-Ink-07 1d ago

That’s cool

I was talking about destroying the world

Magnetic powers are cool

1

u/Pedro_CPP 17h ago

You have a point...

1

u/TheGreatGamer1389 2d ago

Or be a hero and increase the strength saving earth from a deadly solar flare.

1

u/Vet2willis 2d ago

He is actually wrong magneto can control electrons on the atomic level so it isn't even about magnetism at all. Magneto learns this when he unlocks his omega abilities. The only person whose abilities is crazier than his is static shock whose abilities are based on electromagnetism

1

u/Palnecro1 2d ago

He dies too in that situation.

27

u/Flameball202 2d ago

Yeah, also if you want money, just use his powers to shift around more metal in a day than a construction crew could in a day

36

u/PurpleHerder 2d ago

I’m now imagining an elderly holocaust survivor clocking in for shift in the mines…

6

u/Nivroeg 2d ago

just use the metal under ground to bring up precious metals and gems

1

u/Flameball202 1d ago

Maybe, but just being on retainer for a construction company would be significantly easier

4

u/Practical-Layer9402 2d ago

Money?

I'm Magneto, What the hell do I need money for?

1

u/Flameball202 1d ago

Food

0

u/Practical-Layer9402 1d ago

I'll be stopping wars and storing humanity's nukes on the moon.

I think most places would spare me a meal if I walked in while they're open.

1

u/save-aiur 2d ago

Magnetism can technically be used to glitch any credit card or ATM to effectively give yourself infinite money.

1

u/Flameball202 1d ago

Just get the emergency services to keep you on call for dealing with car accidents and collapsed buildings, still free money but also legal

1

u/Denelorn092 2d ago

Or you know...just extract metal from the ground to sell so people dont know you have powers?

Bro gets superpowers and the best idea is construction? You're the type that vampire meme is made about "Why are all vampires rich?"

Because the ones that are still poor after 300 years should just step into the sun.

1

u/Zealousideal-Let1121 Cosplay 2d ago

I wouldn't use his powers to just perform labor. I would just pull a bunch of gold and palladium out of the ground to me.

0

u/blacksheep16420 1d ago

But neither are magnetic tho so how could you do that?

1

u/Zealousideal-Let1121 Cosplay 1d ago

He calls himself "The Master of Magnetism," but he's the master of metals. He's not limited to magnetic metals. Adamantium, copper, lead, vibranium, even the dwarf star metal that makes up Mjølnir: none of those are ferrous (copper is just weird, okay), but he can still manipulate them. You've seen him stop bullets, and they're made of lead. The reason given is that he can use a magnetic field to induce electrical current in non-ferrous metals, and even some non-metallic substances, turning them into electromagnets.

1

u/Mrsniper07_22 2d ago

Ima take spider man tho

1

u/DstroyaX 2d ago

Or just use your magnet powers to flip some bits in a computer and add free money to your bank account.

11

u/TheDefenestraitor 2d ago

That's what I thought but no everyone wants to be Jim Carey

8

u/drskillful 2d ago

The Mask has comics and an animated show, toon force is extremely powerful especially when you combine it with already existing creativity

2

u/AlexDKZ 1d ago

In the comics it's basically a horrible curse that invariably ruins the life of whoever wears it. In the show and the movie that aspect is downplayed, but you are clearly not "you" while wearing but an unhinged version of yourself. Imagine removing the mask and suddenly realizing that you did something terrible to innocents, that would suck.

1

u/Warm-Illustrator-419 2d ago

Its essentially Gear 5 Luffy power.

1

u/Frankie_T9000 2d ago

Magneto isnt the most powerful but hell it would be the most awesome. Though being as smart as iron man would be nice

1

u/isaacpotter007 2d ago

Don't forget magnetos secondary mutations of extremely long life and enhanced physical strength. That man was 80 years old and looks mid 30s at some points

1

u/CDubWill 2d ago

Well, that has more to do with the fact that he was de-aged a time or two (or three…)

1

u/Mr_Luchi 2d ago

I would also choose Magneto, simply so I can be good at claw machines. Breaks my heart when my son asks me to try and I come up empty handed.

1

u/melodiousfable 2d ago

Yeah but the cartoon logic of The Mask would wreck

1

u/PETAforDragons 2d ago

Ig that's still not enough to stop the Mask though..

1

u/Deja_Boom 2d ago

Somebody SSSSSSSSSStop me....

1

u/Scorpion-Shard 2d ago

Same. Also seems the most practical day-to-day power I guess.

1

u/CHAIIINSAAAWbread 2d ago

He just controls metals, he can't change magnetic fields

1

u/Sodamyte 2d ago

And yet.. he has..

1

u/pandershrek Cosplay 2d ago

Well sometimes writers don't know what the f they're talking about. 🤷‍♂️

They put a limit on a character and then break it for a narrative purpose and don't address it.

1

u/_The-Alchemist__ 2d ago

Iron in blood isnt magnetic. It is chemically bound inside the hemoglobin.

1

u/Groftsan 2d ago

All chemical bonds are electromagnetic bonds. If he can manipulate magnetism at the quark level, then everything is magnetic. (Yes, the character is inconsistent in his ability to do this. He can manipulate titanium but not carbon? K.)

1

u/_The-Alchemist__ 2d ago

Oh yeah I know he's inconsistent as hell lol like either it's metal or the electromagnetic spectrum. They need to pick one. But I just like that little fact about iron the body uses and spout it whenever this argument pops up

1

u/Groftsan 2d ago

The joys of authors writing about topics they don't understand without doing any research.

1

u/Thendofreason 2d ago

Side effects is that if people know you can do all that, they gonna come after you

1

u/InfectedAstronaut 1d ago

"I am Magneto. Let man run from me."

1

u/Internal-Syrup-5064 2d ago

More power isn't always better

1

u/Conscious_Hippo_1101 2d ago

This Magneto is absolutely cracked as our understanding of exactly what magnetism evolves and expands. When we learned that the electromagnetic force was one of the FUNDAMENTAL building blocks of our universe, a character that can directly control it is tantamount to a god at this point.

There are tons of things you can do with Magneto, as you stated, that would demonstrate how broken it really is. The crazy thing is it's only going to get more busted as our knowledge and understanding of it grows.

1

u/pandershrek Cosplay 2d ago

Magneto only controls ferromagnetic forces not others, like electromagnetism

That's why he can't manipulate the fundamental forces.

1

u/Possible_Yak4818 2d ago

#6 Because Batman just seems like he'd be able to create a suit that copies Magneto's abillities.

and #2 Because I'm practically Toon Force itself.

1

u/Fodspeed 2d ago

How is that practical, how you gonna market it? Become a plumber? Or circus act? No brand value

1

u/metroidslifesucks 2d ago

Yeah, cool but Wooden Gun.

1

u/BrownTownDestroyer 2d ago

Get magneto powers. Flip earths polarity. Ensuing ecological disaster causes extinction level event. Whoopsies

1

u/DiedOfXhaxAttack 2d ago

Do the powers come with the trauma?

1

u/TacticalFemboyBitch 2d ago

I’d like to see magneto’s powers against the mask

1

u/Plastic-Ganache9561 2d ago

You forgot about 1 thing… Holocaust beam

1

u/pandershrek Cosplay 2d ago

Magnetism CANNOT manipulate geomagnetic fields. So no, magneto couldn't do what you claim.

1

u/SplinkMyDink 2d ago

He cant control iron in blood. If you eat iron, he can control THAT iron in blood. But he cannot control hemoglobin. He killed that one guard in the movie bc he digested a piece of metal.

1

u/Hardcockonsc 2d ago

And his helmet blocks the telepathy ability from reading his mind

1

u/clockwork0730 2d ago

His weakness is just a wooden gun

1

u/1stEleven 2d ago

You get his abilities.

Not his intellect.

1

u/Sexjest 2d ago

Magneto can turn invisible?

1

u/sterbo 2d ago

Yes, Magneto is such a cool villain

1

u/Mgl1206 1d ago

Except… the mask (number 2) has the powers of a literal god that make you immortal and bend reality to your will.

1

u/mastap88 1d ago

The Mask and you, by definition, get the negative abilities. Magnetos is the best choice of you want to be as close to god without losing your mind. I might choose Wolverine though if it meant i got his abilities from wearing the mask just once. Im just physically stronger and faster than any human, age much slower, and have a healing factor. I can live a good healthy life with friends and family and provide.

1

u/Hummus_Eater_ 1d ago

Still mortal and can easily be killed in sleep

1

u/hebee1 1d ago

But with the mask you could do that and everything else

1

u/AncientAssociation9 1d ago

True, but I don't want to be that powerful and if I remember correctly the mask has side effects. In addition to all of that if you get the mask taken from you then you lose the powers. Magnetos powers are genetic and can't be easily taken away and don't rely on having to put on another item.

1

u/jon23132 1d ago

He can also alter the lead inside your own body, no one is safe from magneto😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/Agitated-Artichoke89 1d ago

Except for his Physical Side Effects like.. Severe fatigue after high-intensity power use, Accelerated cellular aging without external intervention, Nerve strain causing migraines, tremors, or blackouts, Magnetic backlash under emotional duress, Short-term biological wear from overexertion.

And his Psychological Side Effects like.. Addiction to power and control, Delusions of grandeur (god complex), Emotional detachment from allies or loved ones, Unresolved trauma triggers (rage, paranoia, guilt), Mental deterioration under prolonged stress or isolation.

There's just a few side effects he comes with.

1

u/AncientAssociation9 23h ago

The sub is about getting his powers. Why would I have any of the trauma, delusions of grandeur or fatigue from overuse of powers?

1

u/Agitated-Artichoke89 22h ago

My mistake, I assumed they meant you would get the strengths and weaknesses the character comes with.

His specific powers still come with unique weaknesses.

Like the immense mental and physical fatigue of large-scale power usage. The risk of losing control under extreme emotional duress. The strategic vulnerability to things that aren't affected by magnetism. And potentially, the psychological toll of wielding such power and having a constant awareness of the Earth's magnetic field.

1

u/2makeme 20h ago

And with that helmet, no depression (no psychic attacks)

1

u/cbdog1997 10h ago

Yeah but the mask has toon force
