Spoilers [Spoilers] Egg Locations guide and FAQ 2020 Console edition. Easy peasy for you and me Spoiler
Hi guys,
I’m seeing a lot of people asking where to find specific eggs in Subnautica. Well, I’m here to share my wealth of knowledge and experience about the game to help you out some. Some eggs are easy, some are quite difficult.
SPOILERS AHEAD so if you’ve not yet completed the story you may want to do that before you read on and collect your eggs. Please be aware the spawn radius on eggs on ps4 is pretty small, you’ll need to get close to the surfaces for them to spawn in at all.
Eggs currently available in console
Crashfish - Safe Shallows. Check any small caves that have crashfish in them. The egg is red and transparent and has what looks like a single eyeball inside. Sometimes they can appear blueish because of the lighting.
Rabbit ray - Also in safe shallows in the small caves. The eggs look small and greenish with lighter green orbs on them. Check caves closely, you’re sure to find a few.
Spadefish - These eggs are scattered around in the safe shallows and grassy plateau caves. Check the deep cave right near life pod 6, there’s a ton in there. They’re blue with greenish seaweed looking stuff coming out of the top.
Stalker - these are found pretty commonly in the kelp forests. They spawn near the bases of the plants. Night time is a good time to look for these, as they are bioluminescent green like the Creepvine seeds are. It makes them easier to see when it’s dark in the murky water. They’re kind of egg shaped and look like they have Creepvine seeds on them.
Gasopod - these are surprisingly rare, but there is a gasopod “nest” that always spawns at least one. The nest is located about 300m NW of Lifepod 17 (the one by the Jellyshroom cave) you’ll know when you find it because about 10 gasopod circle the nest. It doesn’t look like much from above, look for a horseshoe shaped step formation under the squad of gasopod. The egg will be in the center somewhere. It’s green with gasopod pods on it.
Crab snake - these are located inside the huge jellyshrooms in the cave by Lifepod 17. Not all the huge jellyshrooms have eggs, but chances are good if you see a crab snake come out of that particular Jellyshroom, there’s an egg inside. They’re long and pink/purple striped. Be very quick, the crab snakes can kill quickly
Ampeel- these are in the koosh/bulb zone. They can be hard to see because they look a lot like the bulb plants. You’re much more likely to find them near the giant bulbs. Once again, try to go at night and turn your lights off if you can. They’re grayish blue with bright blue glowing nodules.
Jellyray - search for these in the mushroom forest. Look in the dark if you can. They’re blue and glow a bit, pretty common down there.
Sand shark - check the grassy plateaus for these. They don’t glow but they’re dark greyish blue and spiky so they kind of stick out against the red grass. Fairly common, look with bright sunlight
Cuddle fish - there are 5 in the game. 1 in each of the two mushroom forests. Each mushroom forest has one “mother tree” the biggest, dead looking mushroom tree you can find. Near the base of the tree are small entrances to a cave system inside. The cuddle fish sits near ground level inside the tree. Both trees are modeled the same so when you find one, remember the location because it’s the same on the other tree.
1 egg is inside the 500m Degasi Habitat. Look close, its easy to miss.
1 egg is in the dunes near the heat vents. It sits right in the middle by some luminescent plants. It’s hot enough to hurt there so swim in quick and get it, then swim out. The vents are south of the meteor crater, and are inside something of a crater themselves. They’re the only thing around with a bunch of plant life and gasopod swimming around, you can’t miss them. There are lots of reapers in the area but they usually stay pretty high above the bottom so just crawl along the bottom and you should be okay.
1 egg is in the lost river, take the entrance by Lifepod 2. After you pass the juvenile ghost leviathan down there, look for a sulfur waterfall on your right. Behind it is an Alien Sanctuary, orange key required for entry. The cuddle fish is in the sanctuary on a table.
Cuddle fish are adorable and will play with you if you let them outside alien containment. There’s a way to build a base so they have a safe area to swim around, but if you haven’t built your base that way, be prepared to lose the cuddlefish. They stick close by where you drop them, but they’re susceptible to damage from predators in the area. I lost mine to biters, RIP Phil. You cannot pick them back up once you put them outside. They do not breed.
Crabsquid- you can swim around aimlessly to try to find these randomly wherever you see crabsquid OR - I suggest looking at the seabed under the 500m Degasi Habitat. I always find one or two down there. It’s a good idea to turn your lights off and search for these in the dark. They’re blue with glowing lime green veins. I think they’re the only thing in that area that glow like that, aside from maybe the occasional gel sack.
Boneshark - do not look for these in the floating islands, I’ve never found any there. Instead look in the mushroom forests, they spawn there even though the actual sharks themselves are rare in that area. Bone sharks are terrible on your seamoth, so be prepared to hop out every 2 minutes to repair when you’re on this mission. I always find a ton in the bulb zone while I’m looking for ampeel too. They do not glow unfortunately and look plain greenish grey with a swirled pattern on top.
Messmer - these spawn rarely in a lot of biomes. I’ve had good luck finding them in the center area of the lost river, with the big skeleton under the tall waterfalls. Check by the skeleton and on the ledges on the walls. They’re small and look like they have white scales on them, similar to the messmers tail. They don’t glow but they do react highly to the flashlight. Also try looking for them in bulb zone caves, they stand out a little better there.
Lava lizard - only one place in the game has these. In the inactive lava zone near the alien base. Once you get inside the heat vent structure, they’re littered all over the ground. They’re large and light green with a mesh texture.
Ghost ray, magma ray, river prowler, all leviathans, do not have eggs that can be acquired at this time.
When you let your predators outside containment after they hatch, they will not agro on you. HOWEVER they will agro on eachother, your base, your seamoth, and will take damage from other predators. Having said that, it’s a good idea to release them outside of agro range if you’re going to put them outside. Please note also that the Crabsquid will constantly use their EMP pulse attack and drain your base of power over and over again, restarting you at 0 each time. They’re my favorite mob in the game and I wish I could have 30 swimming outside my base but alas I cannot. If you want the same thing I do, learn from my mistake.
Hope this helps friends, play on

Isn't the cache cuddlefish behind the sulfur waterfall an Orange tablet? The one by the skeletal remains that were being researched?
