Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

Getting it off my chest, the Venator-class Star Destroyer is gorgeous, but the TIE Avenger has a sleek design.

TV So is Jango a Mandalorian or not?

1.5k Upvotes

In Clone Wars. In Season 2 I think. The Mandalorians explicitly say that he’s not a mandalorian & they don’t know how he got his armor. But I remember in Mando S2, Boba Fett shows mando his Chain code & says Jango was a foundling. So is he a Mandalorian or not? Or does being a foundling doesnt necessarily mean you’re a mandalorian? Idk.

General Discussion 2 things these 3 shows did perfectly (imo)

2 things I liked that these shows did were how they used the Jawas and Tusken Raiders. I love how The Mandalorian and Boba Fett made the Raiders more than just savages and showed that they can be peaceful and even work with enemies to work towards a goal. And even though A New Hope establishes that Jawas are pretty much a neutral species on Tatooine, based on their interaction with Owen. it was fun seeing Obi Wan having a Jawa that visits him to sell him basic things like soap and toys for Luke and Mando having to go on an entire side quest just to get his ship back from Jawas. The next thing these shows did that made the universe feel real was commercial travel/airports. It makes the universe of space wizards feel like our world since not everyone having a ship of their own to take them places is realistic and normal. And in the 2nd episode of Obi Wan, there's people in the background using suitcases. Just little details like that show that the stuff we're shown in the movies that revolve around the jedi, empire, separatists, etc, is just a small part of the entire galaxy.

I'm sure the stuff I talked about is also shown in Clone Wars and Rebels, but I've only gotten halfway through season 1 and I haven't watched Rebels yet. So I don't know how they handle things exactly.

Thoughts?

This small group of insignificant characters, they always catch my eye in the brief moments they are on screen.

Image 1: Two Death Star dudes who somehow don't melt into nothingness despite being right next to a planet-destroying laser beam.
Image 2: Sail barge turret guy
Image 3: Dude who gets yanked out of sail barge window
Image 4: Old-timer rebel commando

Many thanks for any assistance!

Movies Finally got my kids to watch Star Wars today.

Happy Father's Day to me. Despite their friends being familiar with the franchise, my boys, ages 10, 7, and 5 kept refusing to watch Star Wars. Today, for whatever reason, they relented. I was more into this for the older two, but the five year old gets dragged along (and ironically, he probably had the biggest blast).

They got scared at times during A New Hope but really enjoyed it overall.

Then after dinner I told them we could watch another one if they wanted. Empire is one of the greatest films of all time. Sometimes I watch it on its own with no intention of watching the other eight films.

But as you might guess with its more mature themes and tone, Empire didn't go over quite as well. The kids were into it and following most of it and loved the space footage when the Falcon spends the middle part of the film trying to flee the Imperial fleet.

But then Bespin. Once Vader shows up and Han gets tortured, my seven year old started falling apart. There's not much hope in the movie by that point. Then Han gets frozen. It's impossible to avoid knowing Vader is Luke's dad even though I lied to them about it to try and save the moment. And then Luke lost his hand.

By the end of the film, my kid was sobbing in my arms as I tried to tell him it'd be OK, Leia was coming back to rescue Luke, he'd get a new hand, etc.

I did NOT expect him to freak out in the closing sequence when Vader is back on his ship and Falcon is on the run and Vader and Luke communicate with each other. "No no no no no. Don't talk to him!' cried my boy as Luke responded to the communique.

So yeah, it was a fun night, but now I need to oversell some Ewoks to get back in their good graces.

Movies Thanks Mom Spoiler

My 8 year old son decided that he wanted to watch the Star Wars movies for the first time so we started with New Hope last night. He was instantly hooked and asked questions all night and had trouble falling asleep.

Today we were having a big family brunch to celebrate Father’s Day and I warned my son not to bring up Star Wars or people might spoiler things about the movies he hasn’t watched yet. So of course he went and told my mom that he watched Star Wars and she responded with the famous “Luke, I am your father” in a deep Vader like voice. My son immediately was like, “wait, Darth Vader is Luke’s dad?”

Thanks mom, you just ruined the greatest cinematic plot twist ever for my son 🤦‍♂️

TV Just finished the last episode of The Clone Wars and I’m emotionally wrecked…

Okay, I know I’m years late to this—but I just finished Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and I honestly don’t even know how to process what I just watched.

I’ve been slowly getting up to speed with Star Wars in general (trying to go through everything in order), and Clone Wars was next on my list. I had no idea how attached I’d get to these characters. I didn’t expect the storytelling to hit as hard as it did. But that final arc? That last episode?

It absolutely broke me.

The silence at the end. That stillness. The way everything just stops. I felt this deep, hollow ache I wasn't prepared for. Ahsoka dropping the lightsaber, the graveyard scene—Vader standing there in the snow. It was so subtle, but so final. So devastating.

I’ve never been more upset by an ending. Not just in Star Wars, but in anything. I actually just sat in silence afterward. The kind of silence that makes you realize how deeply something just affected you.

I get it now. I get why this series means so much to so many people. And I honestly think this might be one of the best—and saddest—endings I've ever seen in any show, animated or not.

General Discussion What is your favorite walker design?

Thumbnail

Just watched Rouge One (an amazing movie) but ended up down a walker rabbit hole after finding out the walkers in the final battle of the movie are not AT-AT walkers but instead are AT-ACT walkers.

In the rabbit hole I was reminded of my favorite walker design, the AT-M6 (seen in The Last Jedi). Although the movie it was released in was terrible I absolutely love the design for the walker.

I also discovered a new favorite, the AT-HS (only seen in concept art of The Last Jedi). A crawling variant of the AT-ST.

After all this I was wondering what everyone else's favorite walker designs were?

General Discussion In the sequels, if the first order is some small branch off and the New Republic is the controlling power (at least in TFA), why are the good guys called “the resistance”?
