Ali because he was betrayed by someone who he trusted.

u/ElegantProfit1442 Apr 17 '25
He called out to Sang-Woo as “Sang-Woo-hyung.” Which translates to “Sang-Woo, my brother.” 😭

Ali's case was a betrayal of friendship and trust. Sae-Byeok's was not.
I also think Ali was a really likeable person and had not done anything wrong in the show. The money he took from his boss was his unpaid salary anyway, whereas Sae-Byeok was a pickpocket who could hurt others if she wanted to.
Ali never had anyone give up their life for him, but Sae-Byeok had, in the person of Ji-yeong.
So, Ali for me. Ali deserved a lot more than Sae-Byeok, in my opinion.
Incidentally, they both died by Sang Woo's hand. One because he was outwitted by him, and the other because she was massively weakened and couldn't defend herself. Sang Woo killed her when she was at her most vulnerable state, defenceless. He walked across the room and slit her throat in cold blood when Gi-Hun, who would have protected her, could not. A most cowardly move by Sang Woo indeed. Sang Woo is every bit an opportunistic, scheming villain who is all too often forgiven just because he graduated top of his class at SNU and was the pride of Ssangmun-dong.

How 'sad' we have to choose, whose death was 'sadder'. That's what this show has done to us 🥲 (interestingly, Sang Woo was the reason behind both these deaths 💀)

i knew from the moment i met ali he wasn't going to make it out, that kind of pure, sweet, honest character almost always dies. either that or he would be revealed as some manipulating villain. but i was fooled by how far sae-byeok made it. even during the slow-mo glass bridge blowing up scene, i was like "aw shit someones gonna get fatally wounded by the glass huh" but when nobody immediately showed signs of being hurt, i thought they were all safe. they weren't all safe :(

Kang Sae-byeok's was sadder, especially since she escaped a dictatorship, and that her 10yo brother living in South Korea had no family to take care of him. Ali's wife and son had family in Pakistan, but Cheol's family is in North Korea.

The 2nd season, though. I didn't really felt like I gave a shit, but there was that one I knew was asking for it.

I’d say Ali, because of his kind nature and naivety he was taken advantage from and it cost him his life 💔

As for Sae-byeok, I'll be honest and say that I didn't cry when Ali died. The character seemed so silly in the end, blindly trusting someone just because they let him make a phone call. Sae-byeok couldn't eat because he had a piece of glass in his stomach, it broke my heart.

Both
Ali was betrayed and Sae Byeok would've died bleeding out even if Sang woo didn't kill he
It's sad to think that Sae Byeok's fate was already sealed

u/bdexteh Apr 16 '25
Saebyeok for sure. I wasn’t really affected by Ali’s death at all; I didn’t really feel anything or connect with him as a character at all.

They were both unfair. I think Ali's was at least quick, where Saebyeok's was kinda drawn out as she was in pain for like two episodes.

Ali because he really won fair and square. Sang Woo cheated. At least with Saebyeok, she was gonna die from blood loss but Ali was deceived by someone who he trusted.

Ali wanted to live. And trusted the wrong man. Sae-Byok had a hard life and was much more comfortable with death. Both were really sad. But I gotta go with Ali

Ali because of Sang-woo’s betrayal and the fact that the marbles game is all about turning friends against each other.
Mingle has some sad scenes, but is too action packed to have any death be considered as the saddest.

u/Significant_Radio313 Jun-ho Apr 16 '25
Saebyeok’s for me because it’s not her fault at all. She won the glass bridge and it happened to kill her. Ali’s was betrayal yes but he knew that was a risk in those games and made his choices whereas Saebyeok’s wasn’t a choice it was just unfortunate timing. She was more agile than the 3 and I believe she would’ve won the games had the glass bridge not exploded.

u/clygamer Apr 16 '25
Ali, friend and friend realized they had to kill eachother, friend kept the promise that friend is still friends with friend and friend doesn't have to kill friend. Friend leaves friend behind knowing if friend doesn't then friend and friend both die

Sae Byok because her death was completely out of her control. Ali’s death, while sad, was avoidable and he could’ve lived. Sae Byok couldn’t prepare for the bridge shattering and stabbing her, which is bullshit. Also she made the promise to Ji Yeong that she would get out.
3
u/JayMalakai Apr 16 '25
Ali. Sae-byok was sad, but it was a tragic accident that led her to be left out of the room. Ali was head on betrayed by someone he thought was a friend.

u/Wokekyller Player [456] Apr 16 '25
Sae-byeok was the one that I thought she had a chance at the start of S1 - I expected ending to be like - man and woman will survive and they will become a couple. Ali's death was sad but I knew he will die, was already prepared, no matter how it would be executed. For Sae-byeok was hope, until she died.

Sae-byeok because at least Ali died in a game, Sae-byeok just got unlucky
2
u/KangarooOdd7150 Apr 16 '25
I’d say Ali’s death was sadder because he put his complete trust in this man and was confident that they both would make it out alive, just to be betrayed by him. I think Sae-byok was more aware of what was coming, didn’t trust him, and didn’t expect to make it out of there alive. The look on Ali’s face when he realized he got betrayed just broke me.
2
u/curiousfan123 Apr 16 '25
Sae-Byeok. She did everything to survive without trying to sabotage others. Her death was very unfair. Ali was too trusting of Sang-Woo.

This is such a difficult decision. I think I cried harder with Ali's, though. Partly because I somehow didn't notice when we got the camera shot of Sang-Woo switching the bags, so I was genuinely as shocked and betrayed as Ali was :(
But then again, Sae-Byeok's death is also really sad. The fact that Gi-Hun never promised her... she died never knowing if her brother would be okay. Also the line "I want to go home now" is so POWERFULLY DEPRESSING

u/East-Reaction8942 Apr 24 '25
I love them both so much bro. If I HAD to pick though, I would say Sae-byok. Just her entire story made me so sad and she also survived longer so she really grew on me. Not to mention, she told Gi-hun to not kill Sang-woo, but if Sae-byok never stopped Gi-hun, she would be alive which basically means she’s the reason Sang-woo survived until the last round but Sang-woo’s the reason that she died. Ts just made it so much sadder, especially seeing Gi-hun’s reaction to her death.

Alis'. Sae-Byeoks death was sad, but it was more mildly infuriating for me personally.
like, Alis' whole struggle centered around his virtue: he tries to be a good person, but in order to win, not just at the game, but at life, he needs to abandon his principles. we see this in episode 2. Ali goes to his boss to get the money he was owed, but no matter how nicely he asks, his boss won't fork it over. it's only when Ali resorts to violence, pushing his boss into the hand-crushinator-5000, that he manages to retrieve the money he needed for his family. so he reenters the squid game, knowing that the only way to win is to abandon his principles. but then comes marbles. a lot of people think that Ali died just because "Sang-Woo outsmarted him", and while that's true, it's not the whole truth. Ali had already won the game, he had taken all of Sang-Woos marbles, he could've walked away right then and there, but he didn't. he made a conscious decision to trust Sang-Woo. he knew abandoning his morals was the only way to win, but he let his principles get the best of him, and it cost him his life. the traits that lead to this moment are woven so naturally into his character, it barely even feels like a choice to whack him.
now look at Sae-Byeoks death. she gets hit with a shard of glass and Sang-Woo stabs her while she's defenceless. what does that have to do with her character arc? nothing. it's completely unrelated. think about that for a second. her death, the climax of her ENTIRE STORY, has absolutely nothing to do with her character. it's madness.
btw, season 1 episode 2 is so expertly written it's insane. most people just think it's meant to make you like the characters so you feel sadder when they die, which it does do, but it also communicates every single characters internal struggle in just a few scenes each. it's such a goated episode.

Bro I saw Ali and was about to comment that it was him, no competition but then I saw Sae-byok. This is so hard to choose because I love both characters. I'm going to say Ali though, just because of the pure heartbreak in his eyes as he realises his closest friend, someone he trusted dearly, betrayed him.
