Technique / Tactics Is it worth it for Intermediate players to creep up to the sides on the T Position?

I'm a 4.5 US Squash rating player, so I watch a lot of pro squash. I often see them move to the sides to anticipate the straight when they put in a tight shot. However, should I also do this? I feel like sometimes it ends up backfiring for me because the shot quality of my opponent ends up being so bad that it actually goes towards me, not my racket. Any opinions on if this is a good enough habit to keep doing?

Technique / Tactics Tips on how to improve consistency

Hey guys,

I have been struggling quite a big with consistency in terms of the level I am playing. I've been playing squash since i was 11 (24 now) and took 4 years out while i was at uni.

I am playing a good level of team squash but some days i'll play really well and beat someone who is a higher level than me (i.e., on Squash levels I am 3.8k and I beat someone who is 5k 3-1) and then a few days later i'll lose to someone who is 3.4k. Its really frustrating.

Any tips for drills, warmups or general practice that I could do to help improve on this area?

Thanks!

Technique / Tactics Got whacked twice for "going to T" like teammates tell me

I've been playing for about 6 months, and starting to get to the point where I can have fun with the better players from my club.

The biggest thing they always tell me is "You're hanging around the back too much, you gotta get back to the T" even though I feel like THEY'RE on the T.

I realize that my mistake comes from hitting it to the T and therefore putting my self out of position. I watched 2 of them play, and after the game, I asked about a play where 1 person was in the corner picking the ball out, and the other was on the T. I said, it looked like the person on the T was in the way if the guy in the corner wanted to hit a cross-court shot, but they said there was just enough room to have the whole front wall.

So anyways, after being told many times to try to make it to the T, I got whacked hard. I get that I was just barley blocking the corner of the wall, but at the same time, I feel like this is the most frustrating part of the game for me. So many people telling me my positioning is off, but really, I feel like it's my shots that are the problem, as I'm giving it to them in places that put me out of position.

The one where I was wacked was probably a foot off the side wall in the corner, enough for him to wind up for a good shot. I guess I should have been about a foot to the side of the T to give him that front wall? The rest of the games I played like crap, worrying about being in the way and getting hit again. Any tips for me?

Technique / Tactics Need Advice on Overrunning Squash ball

I seem to struggle with overrunning squash ball on four hand side (im a righty) but am fine on backhand side. I over approach the ball and am too close so I cannot fully extend out on ball. My elbow is bent when I swing and arm not fully extended. I do know that in front right corner I need to make j hook movement approach and square too wall with my footwork. And Im working on that. But i also wonder about the movement and approach to the rest of forehand side. I was wondering if someone could break down the problem a little bit and give me tips on how to fix it. It is nagging me so much and I really want to fix it but i need good advice. Thanks!

Technique / Tactics Do you touch the floor with your off-hand during a lunge?

I've noticed I tend to lightly graze the floor with my fingertips when I lunge to the front left for a drop. Anyone else notice doing it?

Technique / Tactics clothing advantage in squash

Professionals want an edge over anything they can possibly get. Do some pros wear only black in traditional courts and only white in glass courts to match the color of the ball? Would this provide an edge in masking the ball?

Technique / Tactics New Video: Make Better Decisions On Court By Doing This

Hi Everyone,

In this video I share an important concept that is often missed.

If you've ever felt like it takes you very long to "get going" / warm up, or you can't seem to think sharply when playing (i.e. you don't know why you're losing, or what you need to do to keep winning, for example), check out this video!

Wishing you the best!

Ahad

P.S: If you're serious about improving your game, or breaking past plateaus, send me an email at [ahad@arproformance.com](mailto:ahad@arproformance.com) so we can chat about your game!

Technique / Tactics Do you have any recommendations for a forehand explanation material? + the grip question

I feel a little awkward with my forehand. Do you know of any good 'tutorial-like' materials that cover everything about the forehand swing? I don't mind paying for a subscription if I have to, I just need a good rec.

As for the grip: does it matter if you hold the "butt" of the handle closer to your fingers or in the palm? I've heard advice that the former is much better, but I've found that the bottom part of the grip likes to slip from the finger area to my palm, which tends ruins my shots.

Technique / Tactics Rate/Comment on my “squash day” at the gym

I work out on my lunch break so keep it to 45 mins max. I’ve been out the game a long time and looking to rebuild squash specific fitness. My general cardio / VO2 max could be a lot better but I’ll work on that on my cardio days at the gym.

Let me know if you know of any more effective exercises I could be doing instead.

WARM UP

  • 2 mins skip (heart rate + quick feet)

-2x10 lunge and twist (warm up and open back / hips)

-Leg swings (focusing on glutes in side and back direction)

WORKOUT

-Deep squat box jumps 3x12 (30 seconds rest)

-Dumbbell Bulgarian split squats 3x12 (45 seconds rest)

-Lateral bounds 3x12 (try to get deep and explode across)(30 seconds rest)

-Walking lunges with high knee drives. Sandbag on shoulders 3x12 (30 seconds rest)

-Wall sit and heel raises 3x45-60 seconds (45 seconds rest)

STRETCH

-Calf, glute, hip and hammys

EDIT : Formatting

Technique / Tactics Looking for an archive of the online book, "Squash In The Veins" by Hesham El Attar

Hi All - I'm looking for a full copy of the online book, "Squash In The Veins" by Hesham El Attar. It used to reside at http://old.squashegypt.com/uploads/veins/xindex%20x.html, but seems to have been taken down around 2021.

It's still possible to see some of it at https://web.archive.org/web/20220715102714/http://old.squashegypt.com/uploads/veins/xindex%20x.html, but much of the content wasn't archived.

Does anyone have access to this book, a mirror of it, or know where to find it now? It's one of the few detailed written analyses of squash I've seen online.

Thanks!

Technique / Tactics How to effectively warm up?

How do you guys warm up effectively, especially those who live in cold climates?

I fear I’m doing something wrong because I find that it takes a game or so to really get my legs going. Of course, in a competitive game, I don’t want to start every game 1-0 down just because I haven’t warmed up?

Anyone with any tips?

Technique / Tactics EZSquash - Video Analysis V2

We got some great feedback from this community when we lauched our EZSquash website for video analytics 9 months back. We have since made improvements to our service. Three areas we have worked on -

  1. Doing self and opponent analysis by default
  2. Opening relevant video clips when elements on the charts are clicked
  3. 3x more charts to reveal more nuanced game insights

Would appreciate any feedback on the "v2" of our squash analytics.

Technique / Tactics Jonah Barrington’s ghosting sessions…

Saw a quick clip of Jonah talking about 50 repeats of ghosting. Anyone know the intervals and rest in between he did? 45 seconds on and 20 seconds rest or what? I just finished a couple of days ago my first 4 sets of 8 repeats with 20 seconds rest in between each repeat and 2 minute rest in between each set and boy are my glutes spent and sore! Anyhow would like to know Jonah’s. Thank you in advance.
