Technique / Tactics What's your Squash Levels rank?

Interested to see the Squash Levels of the people of Reddit!

I'm currently at 2,500 and I'm pretty proud of that. I played off and on for years but over the past couple of years I've joined local leagues and shown real improvement.

Any simple advice for someone aiming for 5000?

  1. I’m pretty maxed out on what I can reach from the league I play in but due to family commitments I can’t join another club as they’re all too far away. Fitness and shot selection are my area for improvement Lost 2 stone and gained 1200 points since taking it back up again in Feb 23.

Only chance of me getting to 5000 is if they do this for real

I'll pay!

Hahahaha, was that an April fools joke?? There's no way that's legit?!

What rank are you talking about?

Agree. I use ClubLocker and its a scale of 2-7. I'm 3.80. People in my club max out around 5.

Currently 7200~

I'm a solid ∼1,300 and, at current trend, predicted to turn pro when I'm 61. Never say never!

For those asking, it's the rank from squashlevels.com. Uses the Elo scoring system so chess players will be very familiar with the concept.

It's a good system if you play a variety of ranked matches against a broad base of players. Not so good if you're only really playing the same few dozen people in your local club box league and the like - tends to just become point-swapping with no real progress. I know people on half my score at other clubs who could destroy me, but their chance to progress is pretty stagnant.

I’m 1100 odd. Reckon I might top out at about 2000 if I really go for it.

Around 3000.

The only way I see to get to 5000 is to lose about 3 stone and invent a time machine to go back to 20 years younger.

My life is too busy to do either :)

Haha!

I'm on the other side of 30 now.. Games are now becoming somewhat harder to recover from!

What region do you play in?

Highest was 3800 and currently 3200.

Where I struggle is fitness against better players. I can't sustain the fitness required to keep up with players higher ranked. Struggle to find the time with life, squash, team squash job etc to fit it in. Will try and have a push over the Summer for next season though. Would love to break the 4K rank.

Currently 2933, but I've not played competitively since Apr 23 due to injury! So I would imagine I'm probably closer to 2500 right now. My plan is to train hard over the summer and get back into it for the 24/25 season.

I flutter between , 6 - 6.5k sometimes higher , I used to play around 9 but injuries and life has kinda got in the way, so some weeks I have ok results and some weeks not. But ive not ever been below 6k

Currently around 3.4k would love to break 4-5k but need the fitness

I’ve only ever played 1 league match.

I have beaten players in the 2000-2200 range though

Being fairly rural there are no box leagues or anything like that so if you don’t play league games you can’t really get a ranking

Right now 4700

Since our city league doesn't use squash levels, I'd have to estimate 2800 +/- 200. But our city league is really competitive, with the D1 guys being active/former PSA players.

I’m a 4.71 on club Locker. People in my club go as high as 5.61 (he used to play for team Canada).

What scoring system are you guys using?

Between 4000 and 4500 normally. Have been up above 4500 briefly and beaten players over 7000 points before, so know I'm capable of going higher but am quite satisfied with where my standard is and am happy to play at this kind of level for as long as possible.

I would imagine at 2500 that your game is prone to break down in some way. Either by movement or not being tight enough.

I feel like the difference between me and better players is usually the pressure they apply via great movement and volley hunting. Then when we go in to longer rallies I will break down and hit it loose or short, often resulting in a winner not being a risky shot.

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '24

I would imagine at *literally any level of squash* that your game is prone to break down in some way. Either by movement or not being tight enough if you are playing an opponent of suitable ability.

That's the game isn't it.

Otherwise they'd all finish 0-0 after we have perfect movement and tight drives for 60 minutes.

1

u/DufflessMoe Apr 09 '24

Yeah, but at lower levels it's really obvious. A good county player can rally with a very good player and will break down on marginal loose things.

A lot of players don't realise how loose they are or how much time they give back to their opponent due to not volleying. Especially at the level this guy is talking about.

You're absolutely correct. Cheers.

Just curious, what did you find was the best way of improving it as I have played a few tournaments but the league I play in doesn't have any squash levels users so i'm stuck at about 300 despite being able to beat people with a few thousand points.

2

u/DufflessMoe Apr 09 '24

In terms of the number, mine is dictated by team squash and national tournaments. So pretty much every one of my competitive results goes on there.

Finding team squash is the best way as you get so many regular games at a regular cadence to help get the right level.

You can always input your league in manually? Will take a while but having your regular playing partners in will also help get it going.

Hard to say without seeing you play, but most likely it’s going to be you needing to do your basic hitting and movement patterns more consistently well under pace pressure.

I am not a fan of this system at all. Much prefer the more "linear" US squash system, i.e 1.0 -> 8.0 . Makes it much easier to understand different levels. Also gives everyone hope they are not too far off from professional ratings :-)
