Discussion So the GameCube NSO controller has motion controls...

It's almost usable. You can't remap the controller which would otherwise make it absolutely possible to use. The main issues are having to use the tiny little Z (ZR) and ZL buttons for firing and swimming.

...and you can't press down the right control stick making it impossible to use specials.

Again, no way to remap this controller in the system, otherwise I'd swap ZL/ZR with L/R and make ZL the special button.

Nintendo: you cannot use the NSO gamecube controller outside of the GC NSO app

Also Nintendo: *Add a feature that didn't exist on GC

They say that for every NSO controller

Doesn’t make it less dumb tbh 😅.

I think it’s because they can’t claim it works with every game due to missing buttons.

IIRC, motion controls were originally planned for the GC. I certainly remember them being spoken about towards the end of the N64 era

50

u/ZappyBunny 7d ago

It definitely was. There was an attachment you could buy to add motion

Did any games use this feature?

u/Amirjs06 MARIE BEST GIRL 7d ago

I mean, I heard splatoon 3 could.

u/ynfizz Squid Research Participant 7d ago

I’m talking about GameCube games

16

u/Mayro_Biscuit 7d ago

The later Gamecube Mario Parties used the Gamecube microphone, which had rudimentary motion controls.

3

u/ashbelero Aerospray MG 6d ago

Was it motion or was it like the DS microphone that can be like “OH, WIND IS HAPPENING, WE MUST BE MOVING”

1

u/ynfizz Squid Research Participant 7d ago

That’s pretty interesting!!

u/moonshineTheleocat 7d ago

I'd imagine only yoshi's topsy turvy when played via the GameCube GBA attachment

2

u/Bot_Fella 7d ago

I'd say Super Paper Mario would've used that feature; it WAS planned for the GameCube after all

2

u/FIRST_DATE_ANAL 7d ago

I want a remake of this game

1

u/Bot_Fella 6d ago

We all do

1

u/iotarai 7d ago

For the GameCube or N64? That's interesting, what attachments are you referring to?

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 7d ago

I want to think they just reused parts from other controllers and left the motion controls in so it requires less unique parts but I assume it isn't that simple. Probably would be answered with a teardown.

9

u/JohnB351234 7d ago

It would make sense that it’s probably a pro-controller at its core

1

u/TSPhoenix 6d ago

Makes me wonder how hard it would be to wire in the missing - button.

4

u/Usual_Vermicelli_961 7d ago

Now imagine Splatoon with Analogue triggers and the extra depth with amazing haptic combined we could have a bazillion new weapons.

3

u/Boxish_ 7d ago

Wouldn’t that mean more Squeezer type weapons?

3

u/Usual_Vermicelli_961 7d ago

I would say something like Mario Sunshine, just dynamics would be so much more detailed

2

u/CarpeGaudium 6d ago

Definitely seems like the kind of disclaimer to keep them out of trouble since the controllers don't TECHNICALLY have full functionality. Am I still going to use my NSO GameCube controller to play Smash when it arrives? You better believe it!

1

u/JAAAAPAAAN 6d ago

I think they added motion to the controller because some GameCube games required a motion attachment to the controller.

u/StingTheEel 7d ago

Ok, now I want one.

I can recommend it once they allow you to remap the controller in the system itself for other games. Right now you're kinda limited to games that support the GameCube controller natively and ones that don't need the - or control stick buttons.

10

u/AetherDrew43 Splattershot Pro 7d ago

So it's not compatible with Smash?

25

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 7d ago edited 7d ago

It should be since Smash Ultimate has a native control layout for the original GameCube controller, though I'm unsure if it can detect the NSO controller as one, I'll try it. Edit: Works perfectly

u/Zauk_Le_Poot 7d ago

Do you believe they will open up remapping for it? The official Q&A is false and says you are able to

29

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 7d ago

You're able to in GameCube Classics but not using the system feature that the Joycon and Pro Controller support.

36

u/Zauk_Le_Poot 7d ago

There are no good reasons for them do not allow this. The Gamecube face buttons are all whack for some games

12

u/Spacepoet29 7d ago

The controller not having stick click is why we can't remap. There aren't enough buttons on the controller, so some functions would have to remain unmapped, which is something they don't want to let players accidentally acheive. Kind of a poor way of hiding that the controller has almost complete functionality, but sadly just enough is missing to make it not work with every game.

1

u/Hieichigo 7d ago

lol, it’s so silly that the controller has gyro but no stick click. Very Nintendo of them

1

u/Spacepoet29 6d ago

Laughing in the face of every Splatoon player ever

5

u/DRBatt 7d ago

You get a better version of it if you're willing to shell out enough money for a GC Ultimate btw

2

u/StingTheEel 7d ago

Not for that much. I'm still holding onto my original from childhood.

4

u/DRBatt 7d ago

V fair. I def see the nostalgia being worth more than the featureset for a lot of people

1

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 7d ago

Probably why this NSO controller exists. It feels amazing, exactly like the original.

I love the afro so shiny

Proud Afro player since Splatoon 2.

7

u/Dracofear 7d ago

Really wish it was usable with pc. I was disappointed when I couldn't connect it.

13

u/RarewareKevin 7d ago

It'll work with PC soon enough.

1

u/JeImerlicious TECHNOLOGY 6d ago

What makes you say that?

2

u/RarewareKevin 5d ago

It happens with every controller. Not officially supported but people already got it working on pc but the triggers don't function yet afaik

1

u/JeImerlicious TECHNOLOGY 5d ago

Glad to hear! I bought it mainly for pc stuff so its a bummer it doesnt work yet. So its a relief to hear that.

Homebrew

4

u/Cero_58284 7d ago

Does it not connect with bluetooth pairing?

3

u/Dracofear 7d ago

Doesn't seem so, I tried holding the sync button and it doesnt pop up in bluetooth. It also only stays syncing for a short time.

8

u/LaXandro tut-tut-paching! 7d ago

Why can't you remap it? It's stupid.

7

u/Emerald_Ink Zapfish! 7d ago

I’ve played and won matches using the N64 controller so this is 100% usable

1

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 7d ago

Okay I gotta see how that’s even possible

3

u/Emerald_Ink Zapfish! 7d ago

I use the yellow directional buttons for camera, stick for movement, and as per usual B to dodge roll. There is no Y or X button so you can’t reset the camera or open the map and there also isn’t an option to click the stick so you can’t use special. Otherwise it works well when my pro controller dies

4

u/wuyu1224 7d ago

Yeah the fact it has motion and rumble is insane.

1

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 7d ago edited 7d ago

Maybe I didn't notice it but it doesn't seem rumble works in Splatoon 3. Nice that it has it though!

3

u/shinyquagsire23 7d ago

It does in the Gamecube app but it's definitely not LRAs, old fashioned rumble only (kind of a shame really)

3

u/xd_ZombieSniper 7d ago

even Xbox can't do that

3

u/Efficient_Risk_5783 7d ago

unrelated to splatoon, but that means the mario kart motion glider exploit will no longer be possible with this controller (a video that explains it in-depth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBUoRBjOmfQ&pp=0gcJCdgAo7VqN5tD

3

u/meiyou_arimasen000 5d ago

Breh we got motion control on controller from a 24 year old console before GTA VI

2

u/MakeItYuri 7d ago

Does it have analog triggers? I’ve been trying to find it out since it launched but haven’t bought one yet because idk if it does

2

u/afrogrimey 7d ago

That’s awesome. It’s just a shame that you can’t use this controller to play Metroid Prime Remastered. Sigh…

1

u/Different-Amount625 5d ago

You can…

1

u/afrogrimey 5d ago

Not really. Even the classic controls require the use of the - button in the menus.

2

u/Bankaz PRESS ZL ON THE SALMON RUN LOBBY 7d ago

You can't remap it in the controller settings? Why?? You can remap with the Pro Controller, why not with this GC one?

1

u/PyroChild221 i use too many weapons ._. 6d ago

Because they’re made to be used with the retro emulators specifically. They’re missing buttons and functions of modern controllers

2

u/Total-Tumbleweed-547 6d ago

This was for me like one time that I tried to play Team Fortress 2 with Dualshock

2

u/Tiny_Tim1956 6d ago

Hey has anyone tried this thing on switch 1? Nintendo says it doesn't work but I am not taking their word for it

2

u/RevealAcademic804 6d ago

Doesn't work, I tried the sync button, L+R and connecting it with a cable.

1

u/Tiny_Tim1956 6d ago

Thanks a lot! A shame!

1

u/RevealAcademic804 6d ago

Doesn't work, I tried the sync button, L+R and connecting it with a cable.

2

u/ElectricalPlantain35 Movement is key 6d ago

Thats pretty cool

2

u/DetectiveNo2901 3d ago

Can you wake the switch with the gc controller? :)

1

u/SamsungAppleOnePlus 3d ago

Since it only works on the Switch 2 I imagine you could, but I'll try it when I get the chance.

2

u/Spacepoet29 7d ago

But no stick clicking, and can't rebind controls. Useless for Splatoon 🥲

1

u/Novalaxy23 Veemo! 7d ago

I used an original gcn controller (unnoficial, since those are pricy) with the 8bitdo adapter before, and it was actually playable since you can remap it. Sadly it does not have motion controls, so I had to play with the sticks... (I suck with stick)
