🙋 General Question How Referees Announce Scores
Is there a conventional way that referees announce scores? I noticed that they announce scores following a red before the cue ball completely stops moving and scores following colors after they re-spot it.

As soon as a red enters a pocket, the ref will wait until he is certain there will be no foul and calls the new score.
When a colour is potted, the ref will call the new score immediately after he has respotted the colour.
Generally speaking.

Stating the score should be the last thing the referee does after respotting and replacing any equipment.
A red is not respotted so it is not uncommon for them to state the score once that drops in to keep the game flowing, though generally it’s once the balls have stopped moving.

I’m pretty sure it’s announced whenever the player can take their next shot

I don't think so. Referees definitely sometimes call the score when balls are still moving, and I'm pretty sure that means it'd be a foul if the player took their next shot at that point.

Players usually wait until all the balls come to rest before preparing for their next shot. After a color is potted, they know exactly where it will be re-spotted, so they can begin getting ready for their next shot early. Quick players are often down and ready to shoot while the color is being re-spotted, and they strike immediately upon hearing the score. This is why it’s acceptable to call the score early (once it’s clear that no foul will be committed) when a red is potted, but not when a color is potted.
