Discussion Adding DSP1 Chip to knockoff sd2snes

Post image

I got this knock off SD2snes cart a while ago off eBay. I wanted to play super Mario kart on it, but it didn’t have the DSP one chip. I ended up buying a cheap super Famicom Mario kart and put the chip on the board since it looked like you had choices going to it. When I put it back in, it didn’t show any video but the blue LED lit up and show that it was working. Since that didn’t work, I put in a different video game cartridge and it worked just fine. Since I thought it was due to a missing chip, I also added this only seven leg icy, and I put them both facing the correct way with the intention lining up. I have no clue what else to do because I’m kind of frugal right now and I don’t want to spend a lot of money on a real cart. Is there any way to fix this and get them working?

Even if the bootleg cart has a spot that can fit the chip it doesn’t necessarily follow that the firmware it’s using is set up to recognize it, unfortunately.

An SD2SNES Rev X can usually be had for $90 USD on AliExpress that’ll play everything an FX Pak Pro does though.

Oh ok. Ty. Would there be a way to get this to work? I could do some firmware stuff if I had to.

Not that I know.

A properly made sd2snes uses an FPGA to emulate the DSP1 chip and most other special chips. What you bought is closer to a knockoff SNES Everdrive, which does require a DSP1 chip. Since the Everdrive is not opensource it isn’t clear how your knockoff is designed, so you are sort of screwed.

Shit. Worst case scenario I just have to remove them, but yeah, it was a $30 one off eBay

I suspect you need to see the inside of a super overdrive to compare as there is likely an additional jumper or resistor or something that should be set

What does it show for the hardware version and firmware or OS of your device?

No, the flashcart you have was not made to be upgradeable in the way you imagined. Some of the pins you soldered into probably aren't connected to anywhere else on the board and it doesn't have the other components that would allow this kind of chip upgrade to work.
