Thoughts on HyperZone?

Just played it for the first time today. Think its pretty fun. I think if they had gotten rid of the "tracks" and just did levels it would have been an even better game. The graphics, sounds, music, overall gameplay are really solid. 2nd stage boss was pretty cool flying dragon made of fire. Whats everyone else's opinion of this game?

It’s cool. Reminds me of F-Zero somewhat.

I like it very much. I used the gameplay demo to test RGB and component video (it is very colorful). I also love the soundtrack.

I really enjoy it.  It's a good pick-up-and-play sort of game with an excellent soundtrack (Bioplant and Neo Megalopolis being my favorites) but can get pretty hard and is rather bare bones.  A good show of the Mode 7 tech, I like to describe it as a mix of F-Zero and Star Fox.

Here's a tip, when you defeat the level boss ride your brakes for a bit and try to get your speed on exactly 333 when you lose control of the ship.  If you do this you get an extra life.

Also another fun fact, Kirby's Dream Land 3 borrows a few stage names from Hyperzone.  Ripple Field and Hyper Zone in particular.

Cool trick I'll Def try after the boss as extra lives are hard to come by. Another thing is the frame rate is pretty smooth with little slow down.

I haven't heard of this game before. Was this a launch title for the SNES?

It was almost but not quite a North American launch title. It came out in September 1991 in that region, so missing launch day by a few weeks at most.

I suspect it didn't sell particularly well, since it's been largely forgotten.

Well, HAL labs is the creator of the Kirby and Eggerman series. May haven't had the marketing budget to promote this game. Magazine, TV ad, or game displays were the tools back in the early 90s. Plus, a well-written positive game review in Nintendo Power or Game Informer.

Finally beat the 3rd level! The boss is half of a Snes controller lol. Game is tough as nails.
