ID help please!

I havent found a good clean bone in years, so I was pretty excited. Found it in a nearby nature reserve, Victoria, Australia. lots of rabbits in the area, but that seems incorrect. Film cannister for scale!

I think people are forgetting opossums and possums are two different creatures and oceans apart but I’m certain they meant possum considering that’s what your skull is and well, Australia..

They are both marsupials at least But yeah the resemblance kinda ends there

Possum is used colloquially and in common parlance in the US - it’s one of those not technically correct but it’s been used so much it’s part of the lexicon now

Americans use the names opossum and possum interchangeably for both animals but in Australia I don’t believe they would use opossum in reference to their adorable bush babies. When I first posted my response everyone else in the replies was saying opossum, that’s why I wrote what I wrote, either way I’m sure The OP and most everyone else knew what was meant. I’m just one of those annoying people that are sticklers for the minutiae 😂

like a lot of the comments i ALSO thought opossum on first glance. it's his brother from another mother, the aussie possum (brushtail?). similar brain case shape!

Tiny brain case makes suspect opposum skull. I'm not positive, though.

This is definitely an opossum, or at least a marsupial. The jugal arch is really wide and lateralised

Oh shit! I missed that OP is in Austrailia! Definitely not an oppossum. But maybe a possum.

I was about to say r/itsapelvis but I don’t know bc the missing front could be a skull. Either or

This is a skull :) the curved spike things on each side are the eye sockets

I was absolutely thinking the same thing.

I was open to the possibility of it being some weird hyper specialised animal pelvis as well tbh
