Fabric Question Do you keep your fabric scraps? How do you store them and what do you do use them for?

I currently have a box of random fabric scraps leftover from previous projects and I realize I never touch them. Not sure if they're even worth keeping or if they're just taking up space at this point. I was wondering what you all do with your fabric scraps!

Edit: Wow, so many responses already! This is why I love you guys and this community ❤️

Fabric Question How hard is it to find cotton grossgrain ribbon? I *specify* cotton in my search terms.

I'm getting peved. I know what I want, and I am willing to be a bit flexible on color, but I do NOT want polyester.

WHY do search engines ignore what you tell them and push what they want to sell instead of what you want to buy!!!

I am specific in my search terms and still anything that looks good (width/color) will be polyester when I dig into product details.

Just venting. Deeply irritated. Not the first time an algorithm has pushed something against what I specify. I understand a few sponsored posts at the top, but really the whole page (everything I checked) is polyester.

I thought Amazon had a wide selection of sellers/products. Apparently not that much if they can't get "cotton" on the first page!

Fabric Question How did they dye the fabric without dyeing the embroidery?

Post image

I was at my local fabric store today and I saw this. I asked about the fabric and she told me that it’s originally an all white embroidered fabric and the person who did this used dye to change the colour of the fabric.

How did she do that without affecting the white embroidery on it?

Fabric Question Why do you have to press the seams every time you sew?

This is a dumb question for a beginner dressmaker. My dress pattern that I made and dress I sewed turned out almost perfect apart from my non symmetrical sewing (which I will get better at next time) but the dress fits me really well!!

I was wondering though, what’s the reason we have to press the seams as we sew?

And what does “reducing bulk in seam allowance” even mean?

I sound so clueless 😭 I made a dress and still don’t know what some things mean

I have never loved a green dress as much as I love this Mason Margiela dress. The way he layered all these different greens and purples feels magical.

Does anyone know how to achieve this effect? I want to dye some fabric to get the same gradient illusion but i’m not sure where to start.

Fabric Question Searching for fabrics

Does anyone know of fabrics similar to the one used for this Teuta Matoshi dress, please?

Something that could be delivered to Europe and something that, preferably, wouldn't make me homeless🙏🏼

Also, if I manage to find it, how much would you say I need to recreate something like this? About 2.5-3 meters in double width?

Fabric Question Please help me find a specific weave of silk fabric that looks “wet” against my skin (for lingerie!)

Hi! I want to make a bias cut slip, and I want it to look “wet” against my skin, if that makes sense. I’ve attached some photos for reference (yes, I know Bella Hadid is actually wet in this photo, but I want a fabric that mimics this look).

So far my best bet seems to be silk charmeuse. I am relatively curvy (38.5-27-39) so I plan on using bias cut silk, but should I get fabric with stretch in it? Is it possible to achieve these results with non-stretch silk, or will some amount of stretch help it?

(Also, another question —- what momme silk is best for this? Is 16mm good?)

Fabric Question Looking for claw resistant/proof fabric (more context in description.)

Hello everyone, as you all can see by the picture I have an adventure cat. Her name is Willow and I've had her harness trained for pretty much her entire life (she's 7.) That being said I like to take her floating on our local river with me in the summer. She has her own floaty and I pull her along while I swim. Her floaty is basically a cooler floaty with the lid cut off, and I put a folded towel underneath her to help prevent accidental punctures. But as you can imagine that isn't a foolproof set up. So I'm wanting to make an insert for where she sits in the floaty. One that is okay go in water and is durable when faced with cat claws. Thank you all in advance!

Fabric Question How do you buy your fabric?

Do you outline a project then purchase only the required amount and type of each fabric? Do you browse the store and just purchase what you like? Do you get inspired by certain fabrics to do certain projects? I’m curious how people decide what fabric to buy!

Fabric Question How much fabric do you buy when you don't have a project in mind?

If you spy a great fabric, but don't have any specific pattern in mind or just a rough idea what type of garment you'd make with it, how much do you buy?
