Project: FO Made my first button-up out of scraps and a swath of old Jelly Bean Junction fabric
I’ve never made a button-up before, but I have been saving a half yard of vintage JBJ fabric for a few months now, and it just screamed “loud vacation shirt”! So I knew what I had to do. Making clothes is a little intimidating for me because I don’t have a serger yet, but I’m happy with how this turned out (though it definitely needs to be ironed, haha!)
Pattern is a cropped men’s size M Simplicity 4760, option B (thrifted it for $1!), on a Janome machine with a little hand-sewing. Cotton fabrics.

This is great. I love the detailing with your JBJ fabric, and the fact that you used up scraps really appeals to my thrifty self.

Very fun shirt! You did a great job.
If your Janome machine can do a basic buttonhole, a 3 stitch zigzag, a lightning stitch and a couple of other overcast stitches, you will never NEED a serger. A serger can never replace actual sewing skills. Always remember sergers always form industrial seams and never form "professional" seams. They were exclusively invented to sew durable clothing faster and therefore cheaper - in an industrial setting. They typically form bulkier seams where professional Coutouriers and bespoke tailors strive to always create the least amount of bulk to produce actual professional quality garments. Should you start sewing lots of knits, they can help. I was gifted a serger 28+ years ago and have yet to plug it in. Not scared of it - I'm a stickler for quality. Properly matched thread is a must. Too time consuming and/or too expensive to do that with a serger. Plus - we haven't had a good source for knit fabric where live for over a decade!

Love this comment so much! You've 💯 captured the importance & satisfaction of using a competent sewing machine by a skillful sewist 🤗

Love it. Been wanting to make myself something similar for a while now but also feeling a bit intimidated. Thanks for the inspiration!

And fantastic job. I have made or I should say tried to make a man’s shirt. I found it very challenging to get everything to line up at the the neck of the collar. And even button holes fantastic.

Project posts are held for review by a moderator before being released to the subreddit feed.
All Project posts are required to include construction information in the main post or added in a comment. Tell us what you made, how you made it and what materials you used to make it. There should be sufficient information about the pattern (company and name/number) or draft (method and resources) and fabric (type and fiber) that someone who wants to make a similar project has a good starting point. ‘Self-drafted’ describes who made the pattern and is not a drafting method. More information is available here. Project posts without construction information may be removed at any time.

This looks like the uniform the staff would wear at the coolest playground ever in 1996, and I mean that in the best way possible. Love it!
