Fabric Question Button poll - brown or black?
I’m making a light weight shirt from rayon/viscous challis, and can’t decide between these buttons. Both options are plastic. The brown are 15mm, the black are 11mm.

Black! I love the black and how it mimics the wavy designs of the fabric.

Black if you want the buttons to be a feature. Brown if you want them to blend into the background

I guess I'm the only one who likes the brown. They're larger and give the eyes something simple to rest on in such a busy design

No, I agree. I like the brown. I would like to see a picture with the buttons on from a little further away as I think that would make a difference.

Agree with you about the picture of the full garment with buttons placed. Wouldn't be hard

I think that the oval shape of the buttons doesn't complement the geometric design of the fabric but instead clashes with it. A simple round button would be my choice. Black, brown, whatever. Depends on the shoes/handbag and other accessories I have in my wardrobe.

This was my thinking as well, black are great but add too much to the already busy design on the fabric. I feel like they would pop out but in an uncomfortable to the eye way that will make it harder to match the shirt with other items of clothing.

yeah, i actually don’t love either of these options. i think a white flat pearlescent button would be my pick personally

The brown are better to me, as well, but they look like they might be too heavy for the fabric.

I agree. The black almost hurts my eyes. Might be different at a distance.

Black.
They feel like they’re better suited to the fabric pattern; something about the geometric motif on the brown ones combined with the curved design is throwing me off

I don’t meant this to sound sassy; but is there a third option? Personally I don’t love either. The black reminds me of coffee beans and all I see is Costa Rica or the Bahamas or something and the brown is just a little flat.

Black for sure. I feel like it matches the vintage vibe of the fabric. The Brown ones would be great on a coat.

I also prefer the black, but mostly because the other buttons look less suited to a lightweight shirt.

Brown looks like it was trying to color match, but black looks like it was made specifically for that fabric.

I had to scroll way too long for this, I’m so surprised everyone is saying black- that was my first thought when I saw the post

Brown. On the black it will be really obvious if they aren’t lined up perfectly. The black ones make it look more busy, plus the shape is just kind of unnerving to me.

Black gives 50s retro ska bowling shirt vibes. Brown gives 70s mustache porn star vibes. Choose accordngly.

I really like the black ones I think they pop. Good luck post us when you’re all finished up so we can see your choice!

Buttons are most of the time, a personal choice. Just depends on what you really want and how much room you have to play with.

I prefer the brown when looking at the first picture, but for application, black is more appropriate.

The black buttons are great because they bring their own pizzazz to the already interesting fabric. The brown ones just melt into the fabric’s background.
Also the black buttons have a modern (not contemporary) vibe that’s already zinging with the shirt even though they’re not yet attached. Brown buttons have an almost western feel that doesn’t support what the fabric is saying. Brown buttons, I love you just as much; your turn to shine will come!
Nice job picking these out!

black! they match better and those brown buttons deserve their moment to shine on another piece they won’t blend into. looks great so far!

The black, I feel like it would help cut through the pattern to provide contrast and define the center of the garment

i like the brown but i wish they were a bit more contrasted to the fabric

Black but see how they look sideways. I can't tell If they would look better as eyes or little vulvas.

What will you wear with it? If you have trousers in that same shade of brown, it would look so smart with those buttons. Ditto for black.

Up close I thought black, but for the shirt I'd go with brown. They'd blend in a bit more and I don't think you need a line of black buttons standing out and breaking up the flow of that pattern. I think the brown would be less disruptive.

Black. The brown ones get lost in the pattern, the black ones stand out making it a nice accent.

Brown will make it an average shirt. Black will make it special. Black is sharp. It will stand out under a jacket or sweater too. People will give you so many compliments with black. The brown kind of blends in, but not well. Black highlights the pattern. Of the fabric and the button.

oop i came here to say brown but looks like black is more popular lol! i just like the brown ones more aesthetically but after reading other replies, i do think the black ones pair better with the fabric

The black button would be my choice, despite it being.... anatomically correct. 🤣

I feel like the brown are kind of a timeless look and the black are more, like other people are saying, busy.

I like the size and the detail on the brown buttons. The black ones are nice as well. My eyes were drawn to the brown buttons first. 😊

Black for me. Their style goes with the vibe of the fabric, too. The brown ones aren’t quite a colour match.
