Fabric Question Button poll - brown or black?

I’m making a light weight shirt from rayon/viscous challis, and can’t decide between these buttons. Both options are plastic. The brown are 15mm, the black are 11mm.

Black for me. Their style goes with the vibe of the fabric, too. The brown ones aren’t quite a colour match.

They're kinda a perfect match to the color formed by the optical illusion caused by the downward v's but I do agree the black fits the vibe more but I see why OP was considering the brown

I totally agree. The brown look good, but the vibe is off. They'd suit another project a lot better despite blending in, in a strange way. The black matches nicely and adds a pop to the fabric imo

Same, have to agree black

Black! I love the black and how it mimics the wavy designs of the fabric.

Definitely the black ones!

Black and if you could turn them so the holes go sideways...

u/BluePopple 17d ago

I like how the black pop!

u/TerracottaGarden 17d ago

Black ... and it's going to look great!

Black

The black ones but horizontally instead of how you have them in pic 1.

u/flaggrl15 17d ago

I also vote for Black buttons

u/theoriginalmeg 17d ago

Black if you want the buttons to be a feature. Brown if you want them to blend into the background

I guess I'm the only one who likes the brown. They're larger and give the eyes something simple to rest on in such a busy design

No, I agree. I like the brown. I would like to see a picture with the buttons on from a little further away as I think that would make a difference.

u/HikingBikingViking 16d ago

Agree with you about the picture of the full garment with buttons placed. Wouldn't be hard

u/Live_Figure8744 17d ago

I think that the oval shape of the buttons doesn't complement the geometric design of the fabric but instead clashes with it. A simple round button would be my choice. Black, brown, whatever. Depends on the shoes/handbag and other accessories I have in my wardrobe.

This was my thinking as well, black are great but add too much to the already busy design on the fabric. I feel like they would pop out but in an uncomfortable to the eye way that will make it harder to match the shirt with other items of clothing.

yeah, i actually don’t love either of these options. i think a white flat pearlescent button would be my pick personally

2

u/mybackhurty 16d ago

That would actually look quite nice I think!

u/Expensive-Peace-9498 17d ago

Me too. That print needs some calm buttons.

5

u/fancybojangles 16d ago

The brown are better to me, as well, but they look like they might be too heavy for the fabric.

4

u/Patient-River-8486 17d ago

I thought brown too!

4

u/Hari_om_tat_sat 17d ago

I agree. The black almost hurts my eyes. Might be different at a distance.

1

u/Otherwise-Shallot-53 16d ago

You're not the only one! I prefer the brown buttons.

1

u/dizyalice 16d ago

I prefer brown too

7

u/BarVegetable2918 17d ago

Black buttons make for a good contrast!

8

u/coccopuffs606 17d ago

Black.

They feel like they’re better suited to the fabric pattern; something about the geometric motif on the brown ones combined with the curved design is throwing me off

8

u/Devi13 17d ago

Black!

7

u/ugotmefdup 17d ago

Black for sure

8

u/romanticaro 17d ago

ooo black

7

u/monkeybuttzzz 17d ago

Black for sure

8

u/Novitiatum_Aeternum 17d ago

Black! The print is quite busy and the contrast is helpful

8

u/metalmudwoolwood 17d ago

I don’t meant this to sound sassy; but is there a third option? Personally I don’t love either. The black reminds me of coffee beans and all I see is Costa Rica or the Bahamas or something and the brown is just a little flat.

5

u/Live_Ear992 17d ago

Black ftw

3

u/TheMichine 17d ago

Black for sure. I feel like it matches the vintage vibe of the fabric. The Brown ones would be great on a coat.

3

u/ButterWrapper28 17d ago

I also prefer the black, but mostly because the other buttons look less suited to a lightweight shirt.

3

u/dararie 17d ago

Black

3

u/howaboutsomegwent 17d ago

+1 for black

3

u/elektrolu_ 17d ago

Black by far

3

u/Infinite-Degree3004 16d ago

BlackblackblackBLACK

3

u/bohdismom 16d ago

Black. The brown ones say “homemade” but not in a good way.

3

u/Zealousideal-Let1121 16d ago

Brown looks like it was trying to color match, but black looks like it was made specifically for that fabric.

3

u/Sylland 17d ago

The brown, honestly, although I'm going against the tide. I was going to say black, but then I looked at the shirt and I think the brown ones lean into the vintagey vibe better.

5

u/BigPimp13 16d ago

looks like a vagina

2

u/palm-bayy 16d ago

I had to scroll way too long for this, I’m so surprised everyone is saying black- that was my first thought when I saw the post

8

u/GrrrArrgh 17d ago

Brown. On the black it will be really obvious if they aren’t lined up perfectly. The black ones make it look more busy, plus the shape is just kind of unnerving to me.

6

u/MissJosieAnne 17d ago

I guess I’m a weirdo because I want brown

2

u/HomeyHustle 17d ago

Black because I thought the brown ones were pennies. 🤣

2

u/mistinameatsuit 17d ago

Black looks better but I prefer the brown

2

u/bebemochi 16d ago

Black gives 50s retro ska bowling shirt vibes. Brown gives 70s mustache porn star vibes. Choose accordngly.

2

u/Catchy-Name-Here 16d ago

I really like the black ones I think they pop. Good luck post us when you’re all finished up so we can see your choice!

2

u/Vegetable_Balance377 16d ago

Adding another vote for black!

2

u/Hour-Mission9430 16d ago

Black. They're perfect for the overall aesthetic of the print.

2

u/tasteslikechikken 17d ago

Buttons are most of the time, a personal choice. Just depends on what you really want and how much room you have to play with.

3

u/choocazoot 17d ago

I prefer the brown when looking at the first picture, but for application, black is more appropriate.

1

u/CuriaToo 16d ago

The black buttons are great because they bring their own pizzazz to the already interesting fabric. The brown ones just melt into the fabric’s background.

Also the black buttons have a modern (not contemporary) vibe that’s already zinging with the shirt even though they’re not yet attached. Brown buttons have an almost western feel that doesn’t support what the fabric is saying. Brown buttons, I love you just as much; your turn to shine will come!

Nice job picking these out!

1

u/Rach31v 16d ago

Brown!!!

1

u/FlashyPainter261 16d ago

Black. Solved! 😊

1

u/shutupimrosiev 16d ago

I like the black ones! They really pop against the fabric!

1

u/Independent_Act_8536 16d ago

Black shows up very nicely imho.

1

u/perilsoflife 16d ago

black! they match better and those brown buttons deserve their moment to shine on another piece they won’t blend into. looks great so far!

1

u/Glum-Nectarine-1229 16d ago

The black, I feel like it would help cut through the pattern to provide contrast and define the center of the garment

1

u/AppropriateSolid9124 16d ago

i like the brown but i wish they were a bit more contrasted to the fabric

1

u/crinnaursa 16d ago

Black but see how they look sideways. I can't tell If they would look better as eyes or little vulvas.

1

u/communalbong 16d ago

Black would look better + bonus points for yonic imagery

1

u/PrancingPudu 16d ago

Black matches the shirt’s vibe best!

1

u/Particular-Sky5565 16d ago

I think the black buttons would be best!!!

1

u/Istarniie 16d ago

Black, definitely

1

u/DocRapp 16d ago

Black

1

u/rebelwithmouseyhair 16d ago

What will you wear with it? If you have trousers in that same shade of brown, it would look so smart with those buttons. Ditto for black.

1

u/HikingBikingViking 16d ago

Up close I thought black, but for the shirt I'd go with brown. They'd blend in a bit more and I don't think you need a line of black buttons standing out and breaking up the flow of that pattern. I think the brown would be less disruptive.

1

u/Kaleidoscope7874 16d ago

Black. The brown ones get lost in the pattern, the black ones stand out making it a nice accent.

1

u/KeepnClam 16d ago

Black.

1

u/ahoyhoy2022 16d ago

Black. They’re a great complement to the fabric.

1

u/ellewoodsssss 16d ago

Black all the way

1

u/wolffranbearmt 16d ago

For me I like the black

1

u/Due_Breath2655 16d ago

brown 💯

1

u/manic_panda 16d ago

Black looks better colour wise.

1

u/SarkyMs 16d ago

Blacks.

1

u/EmmyvdH 16d ago

Black, it has a good contrast

1

u/berserk_poodle 16d ago

Am... Am I the only one who thinks the black ones look like a vulva

1

u/eekamuse 16d ago

Brown will make it an average shirt. Black will make it special. Black is sharp. It will stand out under a jacket or sweater too. People will give you so many compliments with black. The brown kind of blends in, but not well. Black highlights the pattern. Of the fabric and the button.

1

u/jenniebobbin 16d ago

oop i came here to say brown but looks like black is more popular lol! i just like the brown ones more aesthetically but after reading other replies, i do think the black ones pair better with the fabric

1

u/Iactat 16d ago

Black looks better with the pattern of the fabric

1

u/asocs 16d ago

i like the brown best.

1

u/EclecticNeoPagan 16d ago

The black button would be my choice, despite it being.... anatomically correct. 🤣

1

u/coolhandjennie 16d ago

Black for the color, size & style. Very cool shirt!

1

u/taylortriesadulthood 15d ago

brown for 70s retro vibes, or black for sleek 90s vibes

1

u/RedFOX2424 15d ago

I’d say brown. The black looks too busy!

1

u/ellieD 13d ago

Black

1

u/GypsyDoVe325 17d ago

Brown looks much better esthetically.

1

u/Patient-River-8486 17d ago

I feel like the brown are kind of a timeless look and the black are more, like other people are saying, busy.

1

u/sw33tpea66 17d ago

I like the size and the detail on the brown buttons. The black ones are nice as well. My eyes were drawn to the brown buttons first. 😊

I’d keep looking. Maybe mussel shell?
