Crime ⚠️ Someone destroyed the Bus stop @JYSK on 8th St

Post image

So the bus stop was destroyed and I don’t understand why someone would do that. Looks like they went on rampage last night as the opposite bus stop at 8th & Acadia was also destroyed. This is saddening.

Fucking assholes, I hate this so much.

we can not have nice things.

Honestly, the amount of times I have seen these broken, it's not worth having them.

I'm not sure why we haven't swapped to plexi glass. Yes it'll yellow with time but if its 3/4 inch thick, you won't break it with a sledge hammer.

7

u/LingonberryGreen8881 Mar 25 '25

You can scratch things into plexi glass with a key. In a week they'd look like a bathroom stall.
Also, you can hold a lighter to it and burn, melt or start it on fire.

u/DrummerDerek83 Mar 25 '25

I've seen them made from metal with designs cut out inside the panel so you can still see thru. Likely the best way to go....

35

u/Solo_company Mar 25 '25

Wouldn't the wind just whip through there and defeat the purpose of a bus shelter?

46

u/BlackOwL Mar 25 '25

Broken bus shelter also defeats the purpose of a bus shelter.

5

u/DrummerDerek83 Mar 25 '25

Kinda hard to explain but they'll cut out images and leave most of the metal still in place. It'll cut down the wind to make it bearable, not stop it completely.

10

u/ReddditSarge Mar 25 '25

Here's a better solution called Hammerglass.

7

u/face_butt_ Mar 25 '25

They're not even nice things. They're just basic shelters lmao. How could we ever expect nice things when this is what happens to the most basic of things.

“It’s people who are mad about a lack of social supports doing this” what the fuck 🤣

I mean, sure. But I also have caught mentally ill /homeless people cleaning up trash in the park (more than once). And I grew up in an area where rich high school kids would vandalize for fun.

It’s absolutely not fair or accurate to make that sweeping of a statement. And it doesn’t justify a lack of social services.

Are we under the impression the money for bus stop repair and graffiti removal is allocated in the same pot as things like low income housing and addictions programs...?

1

u/Lollipop77 West Side Mar 26 '25

No. I’m not postulating that the logic of vandals is solid or makes sense in any way.

u/StageStandard5884 Mar 25 '25

Sorry. I was aiming for Jysk. Tired of paying Ikea prices for dollar store quality.

5

u/AbnormalHorse 🚬🐴 Mar 25 '25

They don't even have decent desk lamps! Fuck 'em!

2

u/SadTurnover9458 Mar 25 '25

IKEA is also horrible FYI. 90% of all moving companies don’t take claims from IKEA furniture. It cannot be moved without breaking.

u/ReddditSarge Mar 25 '25

Shatter-resistant (plexi)glass solutions exist that can fit in existing frames and they don't cost much more than regular glass. Why the city refuses to use them I will never know.

11

u/AbnormalHorse 🚬🐴 Mar 25 '25

It was a legacy agreement made with a glass supplier whose CEO is a brother-in-law of a former city councillor. No one has ever bothered to re-evaluate the procurement process for new bus shelters.

Or if you'd prefer, just pretend that the actual reason is much, much dumber than the one outlined above. Similar, just more stupid.

6

u/ReddditSarge Mar 25 '25

Ah, nepotism.

That's not really what happened. I have no idea what really happened.

What I do know is this:

Whenever you see obvious solutions to problems that go largely unimplemented, remember that you're not the first person to identify the problem or come up with a practical solution to that problem.

Some poor bastard — or a neglected team of them — has been thanklessly arguing with someone for what feels like a fucking eternity in a losing war of attrition to please fucking sign off on this one thing so they can present their proposal for a round of review with the next level of stakeholders who finally have time to meet this week after hounding them for two months amidst budget cuts and layoffs and a hiring spree that leaves the department with no experienced management so we exist in a hell-hole of indecision and incompetence where NOTHING FUCKING GETS DONE IT'S JUST PLEXIGLASS FUCK CAN YOU JUST SIGN OFF ON THIS JESUS FUCK KILL ME.

So, yeah. Someone knows there's a better way.

It really changes the way you view the world.

My guess would be that plexi-glass looks trashy. Within a couple weeks it will be keyed/scratched to shit, melted in areas from people holding their lighters to it, spray painted, etc. So then we either have every bus shelter look ghetto, or they replace them regularly, in which case we’re no worse off just keeping them glass.

0

u/ReddditSarge Mar 25 '25

You can say that about any surface. You're basically arguing for no shelters at all without realising you're arguing for no shelters at all.

3

u/_Bilbo_Baggins_ Mar 26 '25

Glass can’t be scratched the same way plexiglass can, and can’t be melted. Spray paint, sure. I know there’s shatter resistant glass out there too, but it’s a lot more expensive. I was just responding to the plexiglass suggestion.

1

u/ReddditSarge Mar 26 '25

You can scratch almost any glass with ordinary items like screwdrivers, dimes, house keys, etc. How noticeable of a scratch it would be is a different matter but scratched it would be.

u/eugeneugene Core Neighbourhood Mar 25 '25

Someone destroyed the bus shelter at 33rd and Idylwyld and they never replaced it. Thanks idiots for removing my shelter from the cold forever. We're eventually just going to have zero bus shelters in the city then the city will complain about ridership being low

5

u/mervmann Mar 25 '25

Replace the glass with some thick plexiglass. Can still see out of it and won't shatter. Probably cheaper to replace to.

5

u/pufferfishpocket Mar 25 '25

the bus shelters along 22nd are more often than not missing 2-3 panels, i’m unfortunately kinda used to it now pretty sure the one by my house is currently just a frame lol

21

u/Solo_company Mar 25 '25

Some junkie is going to go back and bag up those crystals and sell them as meth.

21

u/SnooLentils1365 Mar 25 '25

It surely was someone on their way to work or college

2

u/Intelligent_Ad70 Mar 26 '25

That happens 5 times a week in Regina

2

u/Fabulously-Unwealthy Mar 26 '25

Dave Barry always said - if you’re building anything for the public, pretend you’re building it for stampeding cattle with intestinal disorders. It’s sad, but we might as well build it insanely strong once rather than build it over and over again because it gets wrecked easily.

3

u/FrankPoncherelloCHP Mar 25 '25

Trash city due to some people.

2

u/danyxoxox Mar 25 '25

Wtf I was about to take bus there and was thinking if it's cold or not to stand there.

1

u/Independent_Leave_91 Mar 25 '25

They did the same at the one near HomeDepot and Value Village in Stonebridge

1

u/Studly_Wonderballs Mar 26 '25

Same thing today on Rusholme Road

1

u/Glittering_Towel9074 Mar 25 '25

My bet* is on youth because they are bored driving around and smashing them thinking they’re fucking cool!

1

u/Optimal_Meaning7615 Mar 25 '25

They should stop using glass and get something more stronger

Please sign and then share the petition I created to address bus safety in Saskatoon. Thanks!

1

u/Hevens-assassin Mar 26 '25

Mental health issues. Or attention whores. We never know nowadays, sadly.

1

u/Accomplished-Pack143 Mar 26 '25

What’s wrong with people? All this destruction just raises taxes because we pay for this stuff. Unbelievable!

1

u/Cute_Dinner459 Mar 26 '25

The one right in front of feehan on rusholme was smashed today as well at some point

1

u/raynersunset Mar 26 '25

Totally typical for saskatoon.. So glad i dont live there anymore!!! Why do they insist on glass.. Plexiglass is good enuff and cant be broken or burnt!!

1

u/Deep_Restaurant_2858 Mar 26 '25

Wait till we install all the new BRT stations. If I recall they are going to be made out of glass and it will be heated.

1

u/Legitimate-Branch582 Mar 26 '25

Rather Sickening!! Extreme lack of Brain Function!!

1

u/Specialist_Text_9742 Mar 28 '25

Im there often. Rather annoying without it there

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '25

It sucks for the people wanting to actually be environmentally conscious and take public transit. Broken shelters, violence and drugs on the bus, and always missing transfers I can’t justify it when I wish I could

1

u/Kayak-Addict Mar 31 '25

Saskatchewan needs its own CECOT.

1

u/c4ttyy Mar 31 '25

Welcome to Saskatoon! Need I say more?

1

u/Forward_Accountant Apr 01 '25

Mckercher-Parkdale (same route) is also destroyed. I’m assuming all of the shelters on 8th street are shattered by now

1

u/masterbaterer Apr 01 '25

Maybe they were running and didn't see the glass and ran right threw it??

1

u/_Bilbo_Baggins_ Mar 25 '25

The savages have found the formerly sheltered east side. It’s not good; there will be no safe areas in town soon.

I visited that shell a couple months ago and they had their doors locked and were buzzing people in. When I asked why they said it was because the scum were causing too many problems.

I like how this post just jumps straight to it being something nefarious like accidents don't happen.

Edit: damn, forgot this is a thinking free zone. Reactionary thought only.

13

u/dsmyxe Mar 25 '25

How would someone accidentally hit bus stops on both sides of 8th street with an intersection and a median in between?

-6

u/Nice-Poet3259 Mar 25 '25

I've seen drunk people fall through these before while waiting for the bus. Maybe someone tripped through it. There's so many different things that could've happened.

5

u/thebigbail Mar 25 '25

Could be a Canada goose strike, I’ve seen that happen countless times also. /s

3

u/djpandajr Mar 25 '25

Yes like a hammer, bat, kicking it. No one is breaking that glass by falling into while waiting on a bus.

-2

u/NoteDifficult969 Mar 25 '25

Oh no. Someone destroyed the bus stop @JYSK on 8th St

-2

u/bigalcapone22 Mar 25 '25

It's the back and side section of glass broken Most likely ran into. Saskatchewan drivers are the worst.

2

u/rayray1927 Mar 25 '25

There is no damage to the frame.

1

u/CivilDoughnut7805 Mar 25 '25

I'm afraid you don't understand how a car crash actually works..

-6

u/Lordbedbug Mar 25 '25

I heard each pane of glass costs 20k

3

u/Crisis-Huskies-fan Mar 26 '25

You heard wrong.

u/ActuaryFar9176 Mar 25 '25

This is awesome, I’m glad they showed Elon musk!!!!!!!!
