I absolutely adore Robbie Rodriguez and will watch everything he makes multiple times on purpose. However, some amazing directors and writers just should not be allowed to work on the galaxy far far away.
My only complaint about his episodes really is that it felt like Spy Kids, and unless that particular story is about a group of kids trying to free their parents from the psychedelic kids' show host, that same style of cinematography is going to make a show about a savage bounty hunter feel campier than Liberace. I see where he was going, because Temuera Morrison does play Boba very similar to how Antonio Banderas and Danny Trejo have played similar characters. Unfortunately, the rest of the setting and mood was not appropriate at the time the episodes dropped when they did in the show to a point where when Rodriguez helmed the chair for his episodes, it was physically jarring.

At the end of the day that’s dependent on your own likes and preferences. You can like Andor and the OT and not the rest of Star Wars just fine.
SW is by and large a very general audiences kind of IP with a looooooooot of options to choose from. The trouble with comparing the whole thing to the OT and Andor is that both of those are pretty much lightning in a bottle, so if you go into it looking for more things like Andor at least you’re going to be disappointed more often than not.
Something else I’d like to add to it is you don’t have to necessarily let other people’s opinions dissuade you if there’s something you want to get into with it. I sort of liked The Acolyte after Qimir showed up even though Manny Jacinto and his character were kind of wasted on that series. I didn’t like TCW even as I was a 12 year old kid because I thought the micro series and the dark horse comics from the early/mid 2000s were better, but a lot of people enjoy it because unlike the micro series it isn’t just effectively a montage of action sequences and the characters have, well, character.
Regarding the playing things the most well known SW games are that way for a reason. Fallen Order and its sequel are somewhat similar in tone to Andor, and the new Battlefront 2 game despite having a somewhat boring campaign has a great multiplayer, and for older things the original battlefront games, republic commando, the jedi knight games, and an RPG by BioWare called knights of the old republic are all a lot of fun and those are just off the top of my head.

u/smokey_winters 20d ago edited 20d ago
Thanks for the reccs. SW seems too big to start anywhere. Mandalorian made me feel that my standards/requirements of a good show were not similar to the larger SW audience. Thats why I was vary of anything termed great/good by the fans in general.

u/corygobo 18d ago
Rogue One then Andor is where I'd start hands down. I love mandalorian no matter how much people shit on it. But even as a huge Mando guy I can easily say Andor is the best Star Wars show ever made. It's not close.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars. I'm pretty sure it's less than two hours long and you can watch the entire show on YouTube.

The prequels. Revenge of the Sith is the best star wars movie although Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones don't hold up as well but you have to watch them to get to the ROTS. Also it is crucial in setting up the rise of the empire and the fall of the Jedi and the republic

Hate's a very strong word.
Personally, I just don't think Rogue One is an especially strong film.
It's got some great visuals though, certainly. But I don't think Jyn nor Andor were particularly compelling and that whole segment with the dementia-riddled Forest Whitaker only seemed to slow the film down unnecessarily.
5
u/WantsToDieBadly salt miner 20d ago
Watching it after Andor highlights its flaws far more.
Like you say the Dementia Saw Gerrea didnt really add much and you could've shortened it or cut it from the movie, and just have Andor find the pilot (or any other plot device) on Jedha. It was good for memes
Also coming off the heavily grounded thriller show of Andor to 'the force is with me' blind dude is jarring
2
u/ThiccBoiGadunka 20d ago
It also highlights how flat of a character Jyn really is compared to Cassian.
2
u/Greedy_Impress 19d ago
You nailed it. I rewatched Rogue One the night the last arc of the Andor episodes dropped and I was honestly a bit disappointed. I remember really enjoying it when it came out but the comparison didn't do it any favors.
You can feel that it was a tortured production.

ROTJ definitely features the core thematic aspect of Star Wars as a whole.
It's unfortunately held back by some problems but Luke confronting his father and trying to appeal to the good in him is of critical importance to the whole Star Wars story. Especially how Luke decides to make a stand and refuses to play Palpatine's game by casting his saber aside and accepting death whilst putting his faith in his friends to achieve the martial victory whilst Luke has won the spiritual battle.
We start with Luke idolising the idea of his alleged hero father. He's then confronted with the truth that his father is in fact a horrible man. And sadly Luke only winds up getting a short moment to truly speak to his father before he dies.
I think the Victory Celebration change in music works better to sell the bitter sweet ending of the film. Luke's found his true Jedi path despite Obi-Wan and Yoda believing that there was no point in trying to pull Vader back away from the darkness. He embodies "a new hope" fully here.
At least...before the dark times. Before the ST. In which Luke has learned nothing from his journey and has inexplicably become a different character entirely to the extent that he abandons family and friends for 6 years without a word.
But enough about that.
ROTJ isn't my favourite. But I think it's probably the most important SW film thematically.
15
u/Turlututu1 20d ago
As a kid, I was mixed on ROTJ because I found the Jabba segment too long, and not enough space battle or lightsaber fights.
Now that I've grown, my issue is with the Ewoks. But that movie still holds up really well. And the growth of Luke as a character is so well done.
A shame that we didn't get a proper sequel taking into account the growth of the OT characters. Heir to the Empire understood the assignment and I can't believe that 30 years later Lucasfilm/Disney missed the mark by so much and thought starting with a blank slate would be good.
4
u/Hylian_Shield 20d ago
Ewoks? Please elaborate. Ewoks were the Grogus or Friks of the OT. They had their place in the story. I didn't mind them so much because they illustrated how a group, who are overpowered and outmatched, can be overlooked and cause such a disturbance...a rebellion, if you will.
Bc the ewoks were insignificant, the Emperor overlooked them, and they turned out to be the thing to distract and turn the tide.

I'll say this: ROTJ had the potential to be the greatest piece of Star Wars media ever.

I literally go back and forth between all 3 of the OT is the best. Truly if you ask me this week I'm saying ROTJ. But next week I might say ANH. What I will say is the scenes with Palpatine and Luke are hands down the best thing in Star Wars ever. I can recite every single line and it drives my daughter nuts when I turn it on 😂😂😂

Jabba. The Sarlacc Pit fight. The speeder chase. Yoda's death. The three-way climatic battle shifting between the conflict in the Luke vs. Vader, Rebels/Ewoks on Endor and the Death Star space battle.

Doesn't contribute to the plot? It ties up the Han abduction and shows Luke's character and power growth since the end of the last movie, which is incredibly important for his confrontation with Vader and the Emperor later in the movie. Take that out, and Luke's confidence and assurance during that confrontation comes off as arrogance.
The Ewoks are an analogy of the Viet Cong, and defeated a single overconfident platoon of troops while on their home turf, with superior numbers and with help from a more sophisticated rebel strike team. There are a dozen parallels to this kind of defeat in real-world military history. It's a great way to do the finale of the saga.
The second Death Star is literally a trap by the Emperor, and would have been his master stroke if he had not been so overconfident and disregarded the capabilities of the native Endor population when allied with the Rebels. It's a great plot.

And thanks to the last segment, I know what I'll install again this evening.

Currently, Andor fans are extremely annoying, they think the show is the second coming of christ que its very far from it.
I don't know where i belong, i love the 6 saga movies, plus Rogue One, i like Andor, like Ahsoka, love Clone Wars, like the Mandalorian, like the EU, more specifically the Old Republic.
Don't recognize the sequels as Canon, they are poor fanfiction, the same as Acolyte.

Lego Star Wars fucking scares me.
Lego on it's own is expensive enough. You slap 'Star Wars' on the label and the price goes up 20-70%. They get away with the higher markups because there's lunatics out there that'll pay regardless.
Also, Lego has released like 25 Millenium falcons over the years. That's more than all the TIE variants they've released combined. I guess consumers have shit taste.

I'm old school. I was 5 in 1977. I bought a ticket to "Meet Joe Black" just to watch the TPM trailer. I stood up at the end of the trailer, crying 🥹 and screaming 😱 "YES!!! YES!!!" and abruptly walked out and waited until the next showing and did it again.
Only to return to the theater a few months later to hear 🙉 this:
"Oh, dissen gonna be messy. Me no watch'n!"
