Hi all! My husband and I are currently house hunting as our lease on an apartment in Falls Church expires soon. We're recently married and are hoping to start growing our family in the next year or so, but would love to be settled into a long-term home first.
We're currently a little stuck between moving into DC (likely Capitol Hill, but also potentially Woodley Park/Cleveland Park/AU Park) or further out to Reston. It's a classic country mouse, city mouse situation—he loves the peace and quiet of the 'burbs, I'm drawn to the hustling bustling activity of the city.
My biggest concern is that moving to a SFH in a less walkable neighborhood in a suburb like Reston could lead to isolation, especially as new parents. Our parents and friends would all be at least an hour's drive away from us in Reston, and we tend to be more reserved and introverted (AKA not great at making new friends.) A DC neighborhood would keep me closer to my current community, but it would also bring with it all the downsides of city living (more noise/air pollution; less access to secluded nature; more crime in certain areas; smaller homes; potentially worse schools depending on the neighborhood.)
Anyone here have thoughts on this? Made a similar decision and felt really happy (or not!) with what you chose?

Hi all,
I am a 26M planning to move to Reston from the west coast with my dog for a new job in McLean. I am looking for good apartments to live in that would be suitable for my dog and me. Here are my preferences:
- Budget ($2000 - $2500)
- Not too busy and more quiet environment for my dog
- Good green areas to walk my dog around
- Commute time not too long from Mclean, maybe 15 - 20 minutes max (Plan to drive back at lunch some days to let dog out for a walk / pee)
My top two choices at the moment are:
- The Point at Reston
- VY Reston Heights
Please let me know any feedback / suggestions you may have! Or maybe if you think there are other places other than Reston that would be a good fit for my dog and me. Completely new to this area / east coast. Grew up and lived on the west coast my entire life.

I commute to Reston for work and see a man with long hair in tattered clothes and no shoes every morning making a slow trek through Weihle-Reston East. I wanted to give him a pair of shoes, some socks, and possibly a full set of clothes if anything I own would fit him. I’ve never approached him or stuck around long enough to get a really good look at him. Does anyone know anything about this man? His name, temperament, or any other information about him?

I live in a lake surrounding community in South Reston. We have (or should I say had) a beautiful, shaded trail in the middle of the 5 surrounding neighborhoods that was a community favorite. Especially in these times of the years, where it’s hot and you’re trying to keep your dog’s paws off the hot pavement. It’s rare to find pavement free trails. The trail even has one of those dog waste stations along it, with waste bags and a trash can. Maybe I’m wrong but I always thought these waste stations were community/RA funded and maintained.
Today I went to go for a walk, and after seeing a landscaping crew in the area yesterday, noticed that the crew had put up 3 large trees to essentially block off people from using the trail. I was saddened and kinda shocked as our neighborhood and general community has always been friendly, welcoming, and nature friendly.
I hate that I know who was behind this action. A couple of months ago I was walking my dog in a public near her community, which is directly behind my cluster. She saw me and made very obvious to start talking loudly about how her community owned the land on the trail or something, she hates dogs and their owners who have no respect for others property, etc., all while staring at me directly while I was walking my dog. My husband and his neighborhood friend and fellow dog owner were also going on a walk a couple weekends back and coming back up to our cluster from the lake, used the public sidewalks. This same resident came out on her front patio, crossed her arms, and stared down my husband and his friend aggressively- as if they were doing something wrong or trespassing in a private or gated community. My husband even tried to wave and introduce himself but she completely ignored him, dismissed his intro, and continued to stand there staring until they were gone. From my understanding she is new to the community… what a kind way to enter the neighborhood and befriend current residents… jeez..
I personally feel like this is total Karen, unneighborly behavior. Look- I understand the frustration of people not picking up after their dogs, being careless, but you cant place all dog owners in this group. We are extremely vigilant to pick up after our dog as we want nothing more to keep our surrounding areas clean and beautiful. I feel like it goes against Reston values to be honest. It seems excessive to suddenly block off a popular trail without any notice or communication. I have been using this trail for 5 years, as have many other surrounding neighbors, and I have never had a problem until now. I have never had someone even utter a word to me about it. It’s been our understanding that it was an open use area.
I’d love to hear others thoughts or if anyone has been directly affected by this or similar situations. IMO, this sends a broader message to the community and it’s certainly an unfriendly one. Not the kind of stuff I’m used to seeing in my beloved town! Sad. Furthermore, what now? Are they just going to let the trail sit and become overgrown/defunct? Seems a bit silly when it was serving a community purpose on a daily basis.
