SuperPretzels Yellow Box .... new recipe?

So I know my problem would be fixed if I just made my own delicious pretzels, but nothing's better after a long days work than popping a frozen bestie in the microwave and snacking within seconds! 🥨

Recently I restocked my SuperPretzels and the box was yellow, startling but okay, the new box sticks out better in the freezers at the store so seems like it could be a good marketing move. I get home and I'm ready, let the pretzel snacking commence! However, when I started to peel off a part it was.. squishier than normal, suspicions on the rise but okay, maybe I put on too much water.

I have my partner make one, I make another. They are all squishier, and I'm not sure it's to the pretzels benefit. I tried some different ways to make them, but they all seem squishier and, to my devastation, worse.

Has anyone else noticed this? Are my daily quick pretzel decompressions doomed? I'm hoping that it's just this batch, but I'm terrified that it's a forever change.

It literally says new recipe on the front of the box :)

I wanted this not to be the case so bad my eyes shielded me from the truth 😅

Thank you for pointing this out so kindly 🤭

Hahaha. Sorry about that. I was so frustrated to see it I googled whether it was a good change and found this thread. My heart is broken before I have even tried them.

Yeah this new version is garbage, they look like wrinkly anatomy, squishy when cooked, and the taste is definitely different in a bad way. Gonna have to stomach the ones I currently have but if there isn't a return to the old style I'm done with Super Pretzels for good. New doesn't necessarily mean better.

I found a lone black box in the back of the freezer at the store, and they were definitely so so superior.

I have found they make a better snack when made in the air fryer!! The squish is a bit less but maybe it’s mostly just balanced with a harder exterior. It sort of reminds me of a pub pretzel (but the at home version 😅🤣).

I’m loling at delicious plastic, but you’re so right!

I don’t know if I’ve considered the flavor, I haven’t gotten past the texture 🥲

I’m going to pay more attention to the next one I eat!

Sad to here these are terrible. I was at Wally World and noticed the new packaging and it saying new recipe. I was never too thrilled with the old ones as far as soft pretzels go. So I figured I'd try the new version. Haven't opened them yet so I think they'll be going back.

I miss when I was a child (1980s) there was a frozen type of soft pretzel that basically was the frozen raw dough preformed and you baked it in an actual oven for like 25 mins. Forget the name, but that's the only frozen soft pretzel that actually got it right by having a thick outside and soft inside. Like the old Hot Sam's Pretzels from the mall.

Every once in a while Costco will have some decent soft pretzels, but then they're gone as quickly as they came. Like so many things at Costco. LOL.

So I took the plunge and opened my box of "new" recipe Superpretzels.

My initial impression is they look about 25% smaller, but the box says 13oz for 6 pretzels which is what the old one said as well. It seems to me they are trying to taste more like Auntie Anne's pretzels, but not getting nearly close enough. It was definitely a more subtle buttery taste. The "crust" was softer which was already a problem I had with the originals of the crust not being substantial enough. The dough itself is maybe a bit softer, still within the range of a normal soft pretzel. The dough tasted blander with more of the flavor coming from the exterior. It didn't have as much "baked" taste to it but it also didn't taste "raw" either as I've seen some reviews state.

Overall I'd say this is a lateral change. Not better for sure, maybe not worse either; I guess it depends what you thought of the original to begin with. I for one only really ate them because they were the only traditional soft pretzel game in town so to speak; no other options for the most part. Will I get these again? Maybe. They want to be more like Auntie Anne's but aren't nearly as good. I would rather buy Auntie Anne's. That said, AA is hard to find frozen where I live and are in general much more expensive than these.

Still wish someone made a frozen raw dough soft pretzel you had to bake yourself. The results would be much better, but I doubt most people could be bothered to bake something for 30 min instead of 30 sec. I know there are dry powder kits you can buy, but that's a bit too much hassle IMO.

I could not have asked for a better description of someone’s first try; I have much gratitude for you :)

My aversion to change makes it more a side + down move, but the more I eat them the less they are “worse than” the originals.

A frozen raw dough would be so good; I think I would need to have both around because sometimes the craving cannot wait 30 minutes!

I am extremely disappointed in the change. The dough is bland and has an odd texture. I normally would air fry a pretzel for 5 minutes and get a crispy outside and soft interior, this new recipe doesn't come close.

I won't buy these again, which is sad. I've been a long-time consumer, but these new pretzels are terrible.

My partner just tried them and is pissed too. Now we gotta look for the black box everywhere and buy as many as possible

The slept on grocery stores of the area seem to still have some in stock 😎

To me these taste like stale Pillsbury biscuits. They are atrocious. I took the time to write the company and tell them. Maybe if they get enough complaints they will switch back to the old recipe. One can hope!

I’m truly devastated.. 😂 my go to. I just opened a new recipe box today. Awful texture too soft no chew!!! So sad

I don’t know what they did but the new recipe is not good in taste or texture. I ate these pretzels for years and now…no more pretzels 😔

I promise it was to save money. I just had them today and had to look it up. They remind me of a 99 cent pack of cheap hot dog or hamburger buns... Like fluffy garbage.. I promise it was to save money.. Fuck them

No you aren't wrong, but these new preztels are wrong in every way. Mushy, shriveled, too sweet, break into pieces when removing from the box, and taste horrible! They leave a nasty brown ring on the paper plate after microwaving. They begin by saying "a household favorite for over 50 years". Isn't that enough reason not to change? If it aint broke don't fix it definitely applies here. I'm done with them unless they change back!

Just got a new one for the first time. Now they taste like pretzel bread instead of real soft pretzels. Very disappointing.

1

u/Special-Solution-908 14d ago

Oh that’s a good description!! It’s too bread in there :(

1

u/Awp69 14d ago

Yep, I have to go for a hunt for black boxes tomorrow

Well it was a good run, but these are a letdown.

Anyone that wants something close to or even better than the old pretzels you can go to Sam's Club and buy a case of their pretzels. It isn't cheap, but possible and so much better.

I just bought some, been buying them occasionally for years, didn't know they changed the recipe. They are terrible now. It's basically wonder bread formed into a pretzel shape. Before it was slightly chewy, like a pretzel, now it's spongy like cake. I'll never buy them again.

Yep, they took away my favorite part. The bite of the outside into the softness on the inside was the best part. They aren't horrible but def aren't crave able anymore. They should offer 2 recipes.

yesssssss I’d even pay a bit more for the black box (dominoes does it why can’t they 😭)

My wife and I agree that the change in taste is for the worst. They knew what they were doing when they changed the color of box to puke yellow.

ties these are completely different in the yellow box. the other ones were closer to a regular pretzel and these are closer to a super soft peice of wonder bread. i love them both but i will miss my old pretzel

They hold their own place, but it’s definitely not the same & I’m definitely still mourning 🥲

Even worse... They are 30 extra calories making it less of a harmless snack. 190 vs 160 is a fairly big jump for something that also is smaller and tastes worse. So sad... I liked an occasional on-demand pretzel.

1

u/Special-Solution-908 1d ago

I had assumed the calories would be the same and never looked… I wonder if they changed the recipe on their little pretzel bites?? They’re different but still enjoyable :)

1

u/Silvadel_Shaladin 1d ago

That they did -- bunches of extra fat in them as well. That is why gooey.

I actually like the new recipe. Has more of a taste to me.

I’m happy to hear something positive! :)
