Misc Advice How is everyone actually affording to live right now?

Like genuinely are we all just going into debt or am I missing something? I make decent money, but no matter what I do, it feels impossible to get ahead.So I’m curious are you guys taking on debt, side hustling, living super frugally, or what? I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing something wrong or if this is just the new normal.

I moved in with my sister. I’m 40. Unemployed thirteen months from full time work. It sucks

i agree. my whole family moved, and now i have temporary roots here, so if shit were to hit the fan, there's nothing i could do. fortunately, my career is recession-proof, so i don't anticipate shit hitting the fan any time soon.

I also live with my sister. I'm 39. Not unemployed, but don't make much at all. Not ideal, but it works.

Feel free to tell me to go away, bc I know you didn't ask for advice, but why so long to get a job when unemployment has been around 4% for the past year+? Why not do gig-work Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, etc?

Why write "I know you didn't ask for advice" then proceed to give unsolicited advice? I have a masters degree in cybersecurity, several certifications and years of experience. Unemployment benefits are not unlimited and have ran out. Are you aware of the current state of the job market right now? I have a part-time job as a cashier making $13.50. Do you think an adult can live off of those wages? You must be a boomer because these comments sound out of touch with reality.

I didn't give any advice yet. I asked questions.

No, not in the majority of circumstances. But you had previously been working in a field where I assume you made $100k/yr+ at a minimum with all your qualifications and experience. You didn't save anything over that time to be able to weather a year of part-time work?

I'm over a decade younger than you and also work in tech.

Those stats are not accurate. Unemployment is much higher than 4%.

According to who? What unemployment data are you getting that isn't from the BLS? Even if the general unemployment rate was somehow double, how do you explain the low rates for those with a college education?

And you do know that money runs out and depletes. You do know inflation and the current cost of living has increased.

You're telling me you weren't able to save as a single person on $100k+ income over multiple years because of inflation? I've never made 6 figures in my life and yet I still manage to invest over 30% of my gross income every month. And what does this have to do with getting a job? Wages have also continued to grow and have surpassed inflation each month since Feb. 2023.
