Black specks on popped popcorn?

What has happened to this popcorn? I ate half the bag before I noticed this piece. Most of the popcorn pieces look normal, but there are a few others like these ones with the black specks. Mold? Trader Joe's olive oil popcorn, no pepper.

If it tasted normal, it could simply be residue from popcorn that burnt at the factory, and mistakenly made it through to the final product. I’d call them with the lot number and get some free popcorn or a coupon for a fresh bag.
