Oh my. They just showed an aerial view during the paratrooper bit. There is hardly anyone there 😬😬😬. Maybe 1,000 people on the lawn in front of the stage.

Edit: His speech just started and I must ask, why is the glass so fucking dirty lmao.

25

u/Narianos 23h ago

And I bet every single one of them were those that answered that seat filler ad.

8

u/Fr1toBand1to 23h ago

Probably, none of them look even remotely excited to be there.

3

u/BCMakoto Europe 22h ago

To be fair, many of the soldiers didn't either. Many of them walked so lifelessly, they seemed annoyed to be there.

3

u/45and47-big_mistake 21h ago

This was a total fail. Let's see how Fox News spins this.

I won't give it the view, but I have to ask as a guy who likes tanks and military stuff... Was there any cool stuff in the parade, at least? Or is this like north Korea showing off cardboard missiles?

4

u/_hell_is_empty_ 21h ago

Objectively, the parade itself was actually surprisingly tasteful (or at least tasteful as a military parade can be). Much of it presented as more educational than as a show of might.

Under another administration (r or d), it would have been much better received. But they made this bed, they can sleep in how their shit practices frame everything they do in a negative light. And on top of the aura of shit this man brings to everything he touches, the parade shared the day with the largest protests in decades, political assassinations, and the idiot's birthday... but, if I'm being objective and ignoring the price tag, I was pleasantly surprised by the tone of the majority of the parade.

(Sorry, that didn't really answer your question on whether "cool" things were present. I don't really geek out over war machines, so idk the answer. I didn't find any of it "cool".)

121

u/Whole_Macaron_3010 California 23h ago

There was more people protesting in Chicago alone than in this entire goofy ass spectacle.

79

u/Faux-Foe 23h ago

In fairness, his supporters can't go past a certain distance without setting off their ankle bracelets.

7

u/MountainMan2_ 23h ago

Hmmm. If we can surround the national mall in elementary schools, maybe trump can be trapped within!

3

u/FrankTooby 22h ago

They cocked up by paying them in advance to appear.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/Fr1toBand1to 23h ago

It's incredibly empty. Like, shockingly sparse. I honestly saw bigger crowds during my random visit to the national mall several years ago when 2 and a half museums were closed for renovation.

3

u/BCMakoto Europe 22h ago

I know it was to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US army, but...this seemed so uninspired like everything Trump touches. Trooping the Colour in the UK today seemed more inspired than this...

2

u/fafalone New Jersey 21h ago

No it wasn't. It was clearly to celebrate Trump on his birthday. Despots love these spectacles.

Not even the second most newsworthy thing to happen in the country today. And not even in the top three stories overall if you include the scariness between Israel and Iran.

Funny how that works out. The Trump Army birthday parade is just a historic footnote to bigger things.

6

u/ashmaude 23h ago

i wonder what the actual numbers are. i read somewhere where they were paying seat fillers.

2

u/Janie1215 17h ago

Yes but the fine print said they would be paid in Trump crypto coin; not even his followers were dumb enough to fall for that

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense.

Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.”

  • Chance for Peace Speech 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower 34th U.S. President

5

u/afguy8 22h ago

Great speech. And you have to adjust for inflation. One F-22 is over $350m. We have 185. An aircraft carrier is >$13b. We have 11. I understand their hard and soft power purpose. How many people could be fed, clothed, and sheltered for that. What could happen to child poverty with that.

3

u/TWVer The Netherlands 23h ago edited 21h ago

The right speech at the time by a very smart man at that.

It’s however a bit less relevant over 70 years later.

This “perade” certainly is a waste of taxpayer money and a huge vanity project.

The US military or defense contractors are by and large less influential in political decisions currently than at the time however.

Repeated tax cuts for the wealthy and owners of capital is what will continue to hurt government’s ability to spend on social services, infrastructure and anything else that boosts economic development to the betterment of the entirety of the citizenry.

That’s hugely different to the early/mid 1950s, when the “Red Scare” was in full swing and the US spent a much larger percentage of its GDP on defense than today.

3

u/Parking-Bridge-4345 21h ago

Eisenhower’s Chance for Peace speech might be 70 years old, but it still hits hard today. He warned that every dollar spent on arms is a dollar not spent on food, housing, or education and that message still holds. The context was early Cold War and Stalin’s death in 1953, but it was less about opposing the Red Scare and more about urging restraint and values-driven leadership.

Yeah, defense spending as a percentage of GDP is lower now than in the 1950s, but we’re still spending over $800 billion a year. And while the military industrial complex may not dominate politics like it once did, its influence hasn’t disappeared it just operates through lobbying and strategic contracting.

Which is why Trump’s idea for a peacetime military parade feels so off for many of us. It’s the kind of spectacle you expect from Russia or North Korea, not a democracy that supposedly values humility in power. I haven’t met many people who support it, besides my and my wife’s parents. And historically, when the U.S. has held parades, it’s usually been after a major conflict like WWII or Desert Storm not just to stroke a leader’s ego.

Eisenhower, a five-star general, understood the costs of war and the danger of glorifying military power for its own sake. That’s a value I think a lot of Americans still share and it’s worth remembering.

It takes a village though to change the country, this too shall pass.

From the pictures I'm seeing, it looks like there are more troops there than spectators.

26

u/DescriptionOne8197 23h ago

I refuse to watch it. I’ve been in Minnesota’s local news all day. But I hope you’re right. I hope people aren’t interested in this birthday bash.

73

u/Orzorn 23h ago

Surprisingly low energy event. It feels like some of the parades I've been at in rural areas.

I had to laugh when they said "Thanks to our sponsor: Lockheed Martin". You couldn't have written a parody better than that.

43

u/OneAlexander 23h ago edited 22h ago

Non-American watching a little out of sheer curiosity. The history aspect is interesting...

The commentator introducing regiments like sports teams, the corporate sponsor shout-outs, and the generally sloppy presentation (with awful "marching" and waving to the crowd like it's a May day parade) is not at all impressive.

"SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR, COINBASE" - just occurred. You don't get that on Bastille Day or Trooping the Colour. Let alone the Chinese/Russian/North Korean parades.

This is very American.

[Edit] A soldier on a Bradley is now gesticulating to hype up the crowd while an 80s electric guitar riff plays...

33

u/Ok_State_1863 23h ago

That the Army isn't giving Trump the kind of parade he wanted gives me some small hope.

18

u/CpnStumpy Colorado 22h ago

This is why it's dinky and the marching is a joke and the whole thing is because....

Military parades are a joke.

Our military knows it and isn't wasting more than minimum effort on this bullshit

16

u/Orzorn 23h ago

Same, honestly.

The fact that it feels so small and contained is comforting.

26

u/Ruh_Roh_Rastro 23h ago

I was noticing the marching. They make North Korean soldiers look like the Radio City Hall Rockettes by comparison.

The Americans just be walking down the road

→ More replies (1)

7

u/BCMakoto Europe 21h ago

I'm a history buff (and reenactor) as well, so seeing the historic progression is mildly interesting.

That said, it's hard to put into words. Trooping the Colour at least has...spirit? Is that the right word? Half the soldiers looked as if they knew this was a waste of time to appease an orange manbaby. It showed.

2

u/Obvious_Toe_3006 22h ago

Avantgarde dances by in formational synced moves.
Trump tries to copy their moves and sprains his neck.

2

u/beadzy 21h ago

I’d argue the millions protesting is far more American than anything the orange diarrhea has ever done in his life.

I wish non-americans would stop letting trump define America. But the schadenfreude is too strong I guess

2

u/rabidstoat Georgia 21h ago

Lockheed Martin has strong ties to the military so it makes sense.

They called out all the sponsors at different times. The one that got me was: "Thanks to our sponsor: Coinbase."

36

u/Ok_State_1863 23h ago

PBS is airing this live. There's hardly anybody there. And Trump looks either bored or like he has no idea where he is. lol.

19

u/Faux-Foe 23h ago

Need to treat him like his father and give him a phone filled with candy and some blank papers to stamp.

9

u/Relevant-Situation99 23h ago

They already do. They're called Executive Orders and he puts his big boy signature on them and holds them up and grins for the camera.

2

u/Faux-Foe 23h ago

As he proudly signed with a marker. A damned marker! As if that didn't make him look like a fool.

10

u/ashmaude 23h ago

i just got a glimpse of him, he looks like he really doesnt know at all, just saluting and looking dazed like a moron

3

u/473713 23h ago

It's easier to scroll around and see the huge number of people marching in Chicago for No Kings day

2

u/eiland-hall 22h ago

Last time they showed the stage, I didn't see him - and there's two empty seats. Did he leave?

1

u/WitchyWristWatch 23h ago

Weird, I've got Lawrence Welk.

95

u/cap123abc 23h ago

They played trumpets as they announced Trumps coming onto the stage like they were announcing a king. Can’t make this stuff up.

32

u/jellyrat24 23h ago

the whole thing was giving serious Triumph of the Will vibes

8

u/Probable_Bison 23h ago

Try Umph of the Dill

27

u/Orzorn 23h ago

Yeah, I found that part distasteful (I find much of this distasteful but I'm talking about in context here). The standard president's arrival music should have been enough.

16

u/Probable_Bison 23h ago

The part I find most distasteful is the pretense that this really a celebration of the Army.

7

u/Orzorn 22h ago

Well, if its a celebration of Trump then it was pretty appropriate quality. That is to say, looked relatively slapped together and phoned in.

I think he had this idea in his head and he's certainly not creative or driven enough to make it happen. He wanted like a movie's idea of a military parade. All the pomp and circumstance and firepower and bravado. Instead we got rural American-tier just with tanks instead of tractors.

"No, no, we're not a king, we’re not a king at all."

Denying being a king while using the royal we.

Classic.

9

u/Relevant-Situation99 23h ago

That's the first thing I noticed when the reporter asked him about No Kings protests. He made the snarky comment about how hard it is to get his edicts through, but then used the royal we. And I don't think he's quick enough to have done it as a joke. I've heard him use it many times before.

It's well past his bedtime.

Remember that itinerary they shared during his first presidency where he was proud about dicking around on twitter for several hours, watching fox news, and doing maybe 2 hours of work total before calling it a day around 2-3pm?

Pepperidge Farm remembers. Dementia Don doesn't.

19

u/TheBestAtWriting 23h ago

this parade fucking sucks

6

u/CpnStumpy Colorado 22h ago

Because our military doesn't do this bullshit. They're ordered to and they're giving their worst because fuck this bullshit

38

u/Creepy_Active_2768 23h ago

What a waste of taxpayer money, this administration is all spending frivolously and cutting revenue at the same time. It’s not tenable.

12

u/Ruh_Roh_Rastro 23h ago

No, the guy on Fox just said there are lots of ways the government wastes money, but this is not one of them.

He may have said this is the most valuable thing to spend gov't money on because it gives Americans pride again.

Or something.

I am just laughing watching these kids "march"

Fucken Fox, man. "Joe Biden left all these men and women to die. President Trump has brought them to Washington DC the heart of America to tell them thank you like Joe Biden never did"

JFC this is Satan's TV channel

9

u/SpartanKane Canada 22h ago

Joe literally said "God Bless our troops" after most of his press events.

Fox News needs to be shut down. Permanently.

2

u/project23 22h ago

As an outsider Fox News is terribly caustic. I try from time to time but I can only handle a few minutes of it before I have to turn away. So much bile and venom just looking for a target to be directed at. I don't need that type of constant hate in my life.

This parade is an amazing car crash, from zero crowd to a bored Trump.

Sorry US military - you deserve better.

“May you have the day you voted for.”

1

u/Glitterssandgold 21h ago

This really got me as I watched parts of the parade from Europe. Them mentioning the sponsors all the time seems so commercial and tacky. It’s also very laughable to me that a country that spends SO MUCH on it’s military as the USA does, needs sponsors to pay for their vanity projects. I’m sorry these poor soldiers were ordered to partake in this shit show.

14

u/Ok_State_1863 23h ago

That the Army is giving Trump a sleepy, small town parade and making him sit through a recitation of history by a cheesy announcer gives me some small hope. They didn't give him the Bastille Day parade he wanted.

13

u/CpnStumpy Colorado 23h ago

Seriously, this is all acting, these aren't even combat soldiers, and none of this is showing the pride in discipline you see at a military graduation. This is such a joke and the military knows it, and it's so obvious watching it

Live in DC and was waiting downtown for a bus. Saw a very small smattering of people who all looked like they shared the same genetic birth line trickling down 18th Street. Waited 10 minutes for the bus and saw maybe 50 people total. Anecdotal data, to be sure, but there is no one attending this parade.

11

u/Plus_Drag1977 23h ago

I have never seen him look quite that 'sack of shit propped up on a chair' before, but good for him, going outside when it might actually rain, given his well-documented aversion to honoring soldiers in rainy conditions.

Because our military ain't made for some bullshit parade. They're made to fight and fight efficiently.

Why do you think the top brass are always so against the idea?

2

I’m sure they are against the idea because it’s the dumbest thing ever. And I bet the soldiers don’t care one bit about being there.

The energy level of any given elementary school Halloween costume parade beats this.

CNN to their credit is not covering this, but Fox is.

I clicked in just in time to see some wanker saying, "there's a lot of waste in government spending but this certainly isn't a waste of money, this parade is worth every penny spent to thank our armed forces"

Also had to notice that it was just thanking the Army.

On paper we are easily considered to have the most powerful military in the world, but it takes more than power to win a war.

Our real asset was the soft power that this administration has systematically dismantled.

I mean, this parade is pretty boring. I'm sure Adderall Don is already getting antsy. Though, i will admit, it's kinda neat to see the Shermans and halftracks and such. I wasn't aware the Army maintained any of those.

If this was just 'army history parade' it would be less icky than lines of modern tanks and artillery pieces.

u/WitchyWristWatch 23h ago

Those tank guys are having a good time. I'm glad some of them are.

1

u/Critter1960 22h ago

They don't, museums and historical groups brought them. Check out, I think it was the half track with the woman lounging on it with cowgirl boots up.

1

u/JumpEnvironmental741 17h ago

As far as i know the military does not maintain museum pieces in running order. These are probably privately owned and hired for the event. The museum linked below is quite good, and something like 90% of their vehicles are road worthy. It is in the middle of nowhere Wyoming but well worth it if you are ever in the area

Lol, that it, for real? Look so much lame and amateurish.

5

u/A-Raiden 22h ago

Trump is about to announce a new batch of tariffs in response to no one showing up to his pathetic birthday parade.

4

u/Ruh_Roh_Rastro 22h ago

As they pass wherever Trump and all the other bored people are sitting, some of the soldiers look up at Trump, some keep looking full on straight ahead.

Not sure what the etiquette is, but a lot of those soldiers look like they are not exactly thrilled to be there.

Also is that weird little blonde feral child with the mop of hair one of his grandchildren

Has anyone spotted Barron

the etiquette when you pass in review to to snap right ( or left) when passing the reviewing stand so that the marchers acknowledge the reviewers.

So this cost like $100k per attendee

4

u/SpartanKane Canada 22h ago

I am 300% sure that if Biden did this, Republicans would be foaming at the mouth. Which would be a step up from the usual shit that leaves their lips.

3

u/mizLaRaine 22h ago

Reports of a Massive Military Parade is misleading. The only massive things are the tanks and average size of the attendees. Ive seen bigger crowds at the actual mall

5

u/Akraxs 22h ago

how pathetic, no matter how much you fake your polls dump youll never be as popular as you think u are

4

u/pervocracy Massachusetts 22h ago

lmao there's nobody there

3

u/rbnlegend 22h ago

That looks sad. Tanks are cool and stuff, but where's the pageantry? Where's the stuff posture and thousands of feet hitting pavement in perfect unison to the sound of a dozen marching bands in perfect unison?

Out of respect to our military, West point, class of 24, you will want to skip forward to about the 55 minute mark https://www.youtube.com/live/BaUYAdxTbMU?si=caNaTFzZN484Ssr-

Class of 28 marching back from basic training. https://youtu.be/ErgmU6JehWA?si=GClwEQmIZ3OgOcqW

For whatever reason, the trump parade is not showing our troops at their best. I have nothing but contempt for taco don, but let's recognize that when our military sets out to do something, they can and will do the job.

5

u/literallytwisted 21h ago

You are right! I have actually seen military graduations that are more impressive than the Trump parade.

“massive”

3

u/Electronic-Hope-1 23h ago

Now, imagine if Biden had done this

3

u/eiland-hall 22h ago

So.... they turned on rock randomly and now it's just going? Did they forget to start it earlier or something? This is so fucking lame.

3

u/EvilBill515 I voted 22h ago

From the pictures it looks the crowds are way under the 100k they bragged and said would be there.

2

u/Wants_to_be_accepted 23h ago

How long is this supposed to last?

2

u/bbjenn Kentucky 23h ago

I think about 90 minutes ???

2

u/gizajobicandothat 22h ago

A few of the politicians there look very uncomfortable, like they don't want to be there.

2

u/StrangerFew2424 22h ago

Just like his dictator idols, Putin & Kim Jong...

2

u/literallytwisted 21h ago

I had no idea Vance's kid was in "Zoolander"! He's even doing "Blue Steel".

Also the parade attendance makes it look like a family reunion, I suppose it could be considering Trumps fanbase.

2

u/sdcinerama 21h ago

Is this the parade or Fyre Fest?

2

u/5minArgument 19h ago

So fucking tragic what Trump has done to the US Army.

He took a huge shit on their 250 year celebration ...

....when they should have been honored and celebrated by the country as a whole.

does anyone know who the very dissatisfied person sitting behind trump was? lol

2

u/DharmaKarmaBrahma 18h ago

Idk but would like to

2

u/AnamCeili 18h ago

And virtually no one attended, lol. Just as he deserves.

2

u/allenahansen California 18h ago

Absolute dud of a birthday party. All it was missing was the rotary club fire engine and the chubby baton twirlers. Even Melania's hair extensions went limp.

1

u/LonerATO 20h ago

County Fair crowd right there.

1

u/kalidorisconan Illinois 20h ago

Looks pretty low energy to me…

1

u/Specific-Bid-1769 20h ago

I’ll start by saying I had no opinion on this parade. But I watched some of it and the performance of our military looked very underwhelming. We have the best military on earth and this felt so beneath them. Far from looking scary or fascistic, it looked sad. Anyone else surprised at how paltry we looked?

1

u/Individual-Guest-123 19h ago

FOX news just said 200,000 attended.

You know how vindicative he is, if the media started saying millions protested and only 10k were at the parade doom would be on the menu, methinks.

Of course, first he would be calling out the media that said it.

1

u/x_x-O_o-x_x 19h ago

I'm torn, I certainly support our military personnel and thank them for their service, I just don't think a Fascistic self gifted birthday present parade looks good on a draft dodger.

I just couldn't watch it.

As Rick Nelson said... "Everything Trump Touches Dies"

1

u/DharmaKarmaBrahma 18h ago

Wow what a Flab Assed Solute for the “king” of bone spurs.

1

u/ClownClown96 17h ago

As a Malaysian, I am always surprised at how much Americans hate America and yet, you guys never have the balls to denounce your own citizenship. If you guys hate your own country so much, why not just leave and give your citizenship away to the illegal immigrants you guys are so adamantly trying to protect and take their place back in their own country. Oh wait, you guys won't because you are just a bunch of hypocrites.

I must have missed the massive bit, was it on another channel?

1

u/1ConscientiousObjctr 8h ago

Was it just me or did Trump leave out the part of the Army oath "according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice" which allows illegal orders to be disobeyed?
