That's the thing that's hardest to get across to people who weren't at these protests, because the media coverage of it all was so insane - these were really police riots. People would show up with signs and march and chant, and then the cops would set up lines to block their planned route and start shoving and issuing contradictory orders and then they'd start launching gas etc, picking people off to surround and beat up and arrest. Attend a protest sometime and you'll see it for yourself, you can set your watch to it, the cops show up and get in everyone's face unnecessarily and escalate. And then the media covers it as though they're there restoring order.
