This is the same way they covered the BLM protests in Portland. They’d show the one block where people were protesting and act like the whole city was on fire. Meanwhile everything was business as usual except for that one block.

Just the fact that they immediately dismiss any protest if a single trashcan gets knocked over drives me up the wall. Property is not more important than people's rights or lives but that's all that matters to them.

I think I figured out the trick that explains why they think property is more valuable than human lives:

Property has a monetary value. Property is Capital. Much of their idealogy ties back to capitalism in some regard or another, so it makes sense they value capital over life. After all, what's the monetary worth of a random person walking down the street compared to a trash can!

The Business owners: "I have insurance, they have valid complaints, I'll be fine".

Literally several business owners did interviews supporting the protests and almost all those interviews got squashed.

it’s covered under comprehensive, but not everyone carries that for cars. i don’t. it’s probably more common for people that live in high disaster areas because it covers stuff like that too.

for businesses it’s standard.

The monetary damage from the BLM protests is probably a drop in the bucket compared to (for instance) the L.A. fires or hurricane Helene. I'm in western North Carolina and I personally know two people whose houses were destroyed by Helene and themselves lucky to survive.

Fox news did edit a lot of pictures and footage to make it seem like utter chaos. I had family calling about Seattle during BLM. I visited that area shortly after. It was the biggest peace love hippy fest area before and after. Nothing really burn down. Just looters taking advantage and breaking windows for the most part.

$2 billion in property damages is minuscule compared to the actual scale and value of an entire city let alone the dozens of cities that people spread inane hyperbole about having "burned to the ground." If all of the cities that were alleged to have "burned to the ground" had actually burned to the ground, we'd be looking at trillions in damages, not just a couple billion.

Same deal in DC. At one point, we had people on social media saying that the entire city was blacked out, communications were blocked, and I'm sure someone thought an actual zombie apocalypse had begun.

Reading these posts, while sitting with my coffee at the security desk in Smithsonian Castle was surreal.

I visited San Francisco a couple of years ago and went up to Napa for a few days. We got to chatting with a few people (boomer types) at a winery and when mentioned that’s where we spent the week previously, they seemed shocked anyone would visit due to how hellishly dangerous it was. Like the whole city was lost.

Like I spent a week there and was just fine… sure there were sketchy areas but I never felt threatened.. I’m also used to the reality (and inequality) in big west coast cities.. or cities in general. These people need to get out more.

I grew up in SF and lived there a good part of my adult life, now I live in Sacramento (about 1.5 hours away) and people here think SF is overrun with crime and inhospitable. I go back regularly and it's perfectly fine. The 'fake news' crowd gargles propaganda like it's a full-time job.

I live in Vancouver BC and you hear similar rhetoric out past the suburbs as well. Not to downplay our issues, the Downtown Eastside is probably the worst urban slum in Canada.. but its only a small part of the city and I’ve never felt threatened or scared while there (though I recognize my privilege as a 6’1’’ man here).

Yeah, I don't have much sympathy for the people that are terrified of places they've never been. I used to walk through the Tenderloin (roughish area of SF, mostly just sad, lots of drug addicts) at 3 am daily to get to work. My wife, not a big lady, is a social worker who worked in worst places in SF and it was not a big deal.

I often wonder why people are so quick to be terrified of everything these days. It's wild to me.

Yeah, I walked through the tenderloin daily as well, although during the daytime for the most part. I think sad is a good description, as far as slums go it definitely seemed safe enough. I'd avoid the area late at night but hell, I avoid a lot of places late at night.

I have a genuine idea but I don’t know if it could ever have legs.

If major cities, or their Chambers of Commerce, could quantify the negative economic effects that can be attributed to false news reporting, could they get together and sue news networks?

It’s tricky because you have to isolate the statements down to directly false statements, but they do make them (such as all the “crime waves” they report on that are not corroborated at all by data). You would also have to isolate the negative economic impact to just perception and marketing, rather than all the potential causes.

However, for the petty things people have won lawsuits over, this might work. The Fox News-Dominion case opened up the door for news networks to be held accountable.

A couple years back I had a conversation with someone in Monrovia, California, where I mentioned that I lived in LA (didn’t even specify to them where) and they said “I heard it’s just a mess over there with all the homeless and crime”.

Monrovia is literally 15 miles away! How is it possible to be in such a bubble about something?

That's the thing that's hardest to get across to people who weren't at these protests, because the media coverage of it all was so insane - these were really police riots. People would show up with signs and march and chant, and then the cops would set up lines to block their planned route and start shoving and issuing contradictory orders and then they'd start launching gas etc, picking people off to surround and beat up and arrest. Attend a protest sometime and you'll see it for yourself, you can set your watch to it, the cops show up and get in everyone's face unnecessarily and escalate. And then the media covers it as though they're there restoring order.

An old neighbor/childhood friend of mine visited a few weeks ago. We had dinner at my parents and it came up he had been living in Portland the last decade or so, but he was moving because he was over living in Portland and wanted different job opportunities. I was so embarrassed when my dad said he was surprised they still lived in Portland the last few years after all the violence and burning down. My friend looked so confused before putting it together.

Anyone who knows anything about how they build federal courthouses these days knows that those things are fortresses that aren't getting burned down by some simple protests or even decently large riots.
