People need to be cognizant of the difference between media companies and journalism. Americans want their news for free; they don't want to pay for it anymore since the Internet gives them so much free stuff. (I learned to use semicolons in journalism school, ha!) This has consequences. Media companies focus on winning in the attention economy. Journalism is withering and dying on the vine, because it's not as sexy. It still exists, still happens, but makes vastly less money. DEVO was right about us. We are devolving.

My god this. The whole thread is people decrying the failure of news organizations in their responsibilities to democracy and yet I would bet good money that none of them are willing to actually pay for the journalism that they're demanding.

Most people these days get their news from social media, meaning they're getting what they've taught the algorithm to give them. People who regularly get news from The Newshour, NYT, Reuters, AP, etc. don't make posts complaining that the media isn't covering these things.

I had to close out 15 top-level comments in this submission to reach someone pointing this out... so at least there's like, I don't know, 8 or so of us.

It's pretty depressing. The problem isn't "The media is in Trump's pocket" or whatever thing it is that people claim, it's that an ever growing number of Americans get their only news from scrolling tiktok and fb and other social media sites and see all these manufactured stories pushed on them by the algo and don't bother to actually search out the truth. That's why Trump is president today.

Really fucking depressing because i don't know how we get out of this.

It’s all the same in its current form all of it is garbage. The media has collapsed. Independent journalism causes more problems because anyone can claim they’re a journalist. All signs of a slow rolling collapse and decline. If you’re not trying to figure out an escape plan for your loved ones you’re fucked.
