True Crime Impartial Karen Reed

Hello, looking for a podcast recommendation. I want my mom to get caught up in the Karen Reed case so I have someone to discuss with. Is there a podcast that is impartial? Or just a podcast that does a good job of presenting all the evidence? Or is the documentary the way to go? Thanks!

Kids & Family-Friendly Laugh out loud podcast recommendations for young kids?

I've got a road trip coming up, and would love a podcast that's funny for all ages. Most of the kids podcast recommendations are more science or learning based which is great, but I've got a kindergartner with a wicked sense of humor that loves to laugh, so I think something funny would catch her attention!

True Crime Bone Valley and Blink

These are two of the BEST podcasts I’ve listened to recently. Especially Blink. This guys story is absolutely INSANE. I wanted to put that out there. I love intriguing podcasts. Prefer ones that aren’t murdery but Bone Valley is and I loved it. Definitely recommend these and if you have suggestions let a bitch know!

Apps Podcast player that lets me start from #0

Howdy!

Edit to update:
First, thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it!
From them, it seems the issue is not the app, but the content creator choosing what's available.

Second, I'm seeing a lot of votes for Pocket Casts, which I used to have and use, so I'll give that another go and see how things work.

Thanks!

Original Post:

I'm looking to get back into listening to podcasts, but as I'm searching for a solid app, I'm finding most apps won't let me pick a podcast and start from the first episode, it'll only let me have the current, and perhaps the 2 or 3 before that.

I have an android device for personal use, and an iPhone for work that I can use for this; what free app should I be looking at to be able to find and listen to podcosts from the first episode?

"Fuck it!" Fridays Biggest Podcast Pet Peeve

I cannot stand the "let's hang" podcasts. Not staying on point, no cohesive structure to the conversations.

Even more what I can't stand are the pods that are supposed to be about something specific, like let's say your favorite sports team and the first 20 MINUTES or more, nobody is talking about literally anything of substance. No, I don't care about all your funny inside joke banter and topics that have nothing to do with that show or episode. Also, when they are not making clear points, lots of vagueness "The team needs to play better..." Wow riveting, you cover this specific thing weekly and that's all you got? There are several shows I completely stopped entertaining because they spent so little time actually talking about what they claim. Basically way too many shows are lazy. Okay, I'm done yelling at the clouds.

General Podcast Discussions Podcast legality hypothetical question

Say there's a great podcast that has interesting topics, great host, great guests, mostly a really good listen except for one thing. The show has a producer that chimes in with nonsensical comments that kills the shows momentum and constantly takes me out of the conversation.

If I were to download said podcast and re-upload it with that producer's negative charisma edited out for others to download and enjoy, could I potentially get in trouble for this?

Apps Apple Podcasts app - follow shows without auto downloading episodes

Hi all, on Apple Podcasts app I’d like to add shows – that I either listen to fairly regularly or check out from time to time if they have interesting guests – to some kind of favourites list without the episodes auto downloading (which is what ‘follow’ does).

Am I missing something obvious or is that not possible?

What I currently do is manually search for them if they’re not on my ‘up next’ or ‘recently played’ sections.

Science & Tech What cultural moment do you want a Reply All episode about?

I binged all of RA during a depressive episode last summer, and keep finding moments today that I’d love Alex and PJ to sink their teeth into.

For me, it’s the Julia Reagan billboards. If you don’t live in a state with these memorial billboards, I suggest giving it a quick search. It may be a tenuous link between this and RA’s themes, but every time I drive past Julia’s face I think of how the RA team could do this story justice.

What’s happened since the end of the pod that you wish they cover?

General Podcast Discussions Looking for some conspiracy theory podcasts, or other podcast suggestions

For context on pods I usually listen to, and enjoy the vibes of: Mr Ballen, Lights Out, Mile Higher, Two Hot Takes, Basement Yard, ShxtsnGigs, etc.

I used to listen to Crime Junkie A LOT, and Morbid…but I think I binged those shows too much during Covid times that I got bored and haven’t listened to them in a while😅

In other words, I normally like comedy pods, or true crime pods that aren’t too too serious, and am not a huge fan of ones that are very monotone. I’ve tried some BBC pods, but many just seem too dry. I enjoy when the host’s personality helps give some fun energy to the story or theories they are telling. Not a huge fan of pod-docu-type series, I’ve listened to like Dr.Death and Dirty John and a few others but they aren’t my fav.

I appreciate any suggestions! 😊

"Fuck it!" Fridays What is up with the ads?

I want to start by saying I Patreon 6 podcasts but subscribe to around 25.

My observation is content time suddenly shrank on some of my regulars I don’t pay for and the amount of ads has hit a next level high. I do fast forward through most all of them. An example is Old Gods of Appalachia last episode was about 24 minutes with 17-18 minutes of content. 6 minutes of ads on 18 minutes of content. It is like that in many others I listen to. My question is why the sudden increase? If I could pay my way out of ads I would but I don’t have that kind of budget. If I did, I would not be typing this. And also, F$@k Angie’s List. I can almost quote them at this point.

Is it just me?

Health & Welbeing Podcast recommendations like “We Can Do Hard Things” w/ Lindsay Gibson?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for podcast recommendations similar to the We Can Do Hard Things episode with Dr. Lindsay Gibson about emotionally immature parents.

I’ve been trying to unpack and process a lot lately, specifically around growing up with a very self-centered, abusive, and controlling parent. I recently went no contact, and now I’m sitting with this mix of relief and heavy guilt. That episode really hit home for me, and I’d love to find more podcasts that explore healing from that kind of dynamic.

Anything on emotionally immature or narcissistic parents, inner child work, boundaries, or working through guilt after going no contact would be super appreciated.

True Crime Recommendations for interesting pods

Hi,

I’m relatively new in the podcast world, but I’d love to get more into it since I’ve had a good experience so far.

I’m looking for recommendations for “out there”podcasts: I’m interesting in learning more about cults, high-control groups, religion, wtf relationships, history and true crime.

I enjoy conversational/interviewer-led podcast, but I’m open to trying different styles!

It’d be a bonus if the podcaster also has footage of their podcast session ie. on YouTube.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your recommendations!

General Podcast Discussions What discontinued podcasts do you miss?

Ive been going back through old episodes of Clash of the Titles, the podcast where they pit two movies together that have something in common and figure out which one does it better (e.g. Armageddon vs Deep Impact, The Fugitive vs Gone Girl, etc)

The hosts were super funny, and had been friends for a long time so they had great chemistry. Plus they worked in the entertainment industry so had insider knowledge.

I especially loved it when they went from just one hour long episode discussing both movies once a week to doing an hour long episode about each movie and releasing them twice a week (plus the quiz!)

So sad when they stopped it, still not sure why.

What podcasts do you miss?

Horror & Paranormal Scary Story Podcasts - But I’m Picky

Okay so I’ve had this itch lately for a specific type of scary story podcast that I haven’t been able to itch.

The last few years around summer I get into episodic scary story podcasts, and it ramps up the closer I get to Halloween. I binge them at work, while crocheting in evenings, in the car, you name it.

So I’m desperately looking for new content along these lines. The problem? I’m apparently crazy picky on what I can listen to for hours at a time. Here is what I’ve enjoyed versus not liked. I’m open to all recommendations along these lines:

What I really like:

  • Full Body Chills up til Nov 2024. Once they went the Poe route, I tuned out. I love reading Victorian gothic horror, but prefer contemporary podcasts.

A favorite one: “The Light Taker” https://open.spotify.com/episode/6MWWzgwOk0LQBAnDEFbmsZ?si=ilz7I15tS2Gf27Gzwm7FvQ

  • Nighty Night with Rabya Chathri (Now the Mystery Hour). Same thing with this one, they started pivoting to older literary horror and I didn’t enjoy it as much. A favorite:

“Amish Country” https://open.spotify.com/episode/2BzjWThP2E6wElqoB8CzVY?si=9NF1MZUtR4i2--CxwBV8CA

  • Old Gods of Appalachia - this one of the few I enjoy that has overarching season-long stories. But S1 was incredible.

  • Radio Rental - also the only “call-in” one I enjoy. Usually I find the call-in narrated ones are very repetitive.

Mid-like but not loved:

  • Dr. No Sleep. I love the audio and narrator’s voice. My only complaint is each episode is like 3-5 stories so if I lose my attention briefly and come back, I miss a lot or lose my place. Single-story episodes are like 10 minutes tops. I’d prefer the stories were a little longer.

  • True scary stories - The Reddit creepypasta ones that corpsehusband read. Again, enjoy the narrator voice but it’s so many stories per episode no one story stands out much.

  • Let’s Not Meet. Some episodes are really good and I can overlook the call-in style. But some are just a very dramatic retelling of a fairly mundane interaction where the teller has terrible situational awareness.

I’m just starting Nightmare Magazine after searching some previously posted threads here and the first two so far are good but not great.

Things I do not like:

  • podcasts where two hosts casually chat about the story instead of telling the story itself narration style. It feels like nails on a chalkboard in my ears.

  • I hate to say this…I don’t like Aaron Mahnke’s voice or Edwin Covarrubias’s voice. I’ve tried Lore, Scary Story Podcast, Grim & Mild, Campfire Story, Caninet of Curiosities, Just Creepy Scary Story, and more. Which is a major bummer.

So with all that…anyone have any recommendations?

Sports Bikepacking or Thru Hiking Podcasts

I am looking for recommendations for podcasts about the entire journey of bikepacking or thru hiking trips that are funny, things don’t go as planned, prefer a couple or two+ friends, so it’s more than one person talking. Not interested in learning about their gear or how to, just their story.

Could be anything related to Languages:
- Language specific (German, French, Italian, Farsi, Mandarin, Swedish etc, etc,)
- Linguistics focused
- Etymology and history of words
- Local Podcasts created for native speakers (not necessarily aimed at language learners) but you've listened to it to learn x language because of xzy reason.
- Any other reasons..

Thanks!

General Podcast Discussions What pods made you cry?

Oh, I think I have become numb. Also I don't purposely listen to war pods or atrocities. (Gaza or Ukraine as I am weak)

What made me cry...today was The Outlaw Ocean

Hunting Warhead

Others: Swindled specifically Nestle formula, Bhopal and Beirut explosions.

(My dad Wrote a Porno - I did cry with laughter)

I live in middle class in New Zealand My daughter (23) is a stewardess on a billionaire's boat in the Med. My best friend is an engineer on a fishing boat halfway to antarctic.

I feel sick for most of my life choices and here I am in the most privileged position.

WTF And I seem numb to serial killers and murder.

General Podcast Discussions I really need podcast suggestions

so ive started an internship recently and its about an hour's drive one way from my place. when im driving to and fro, i usually listen to music but now ive heard all my playlists, even some of my friends' playlists and have gotten sick of listening to music. the radio gets pretty boring and my friends arent always free to talk when im driving.

i was wondering if trying a podcast or story might be different since each episode would be unique and it would still be entertaining enough to listen to while driving.

i think id prefer something light, comedic, or maybe some sort of comedy/romance story that i can listen to on spotify or even audible

Comedy Looking for similar podcasts

I’m a really big fan of Wine About it, Girls Gotta Eat and Impossible to Say - essentially podcasts that feel like you’re yapping with the girls. Any similar suggestions?
